Accelerometer is actually a 3 axis motion sensor which essentially tells your iPhone it's position with respect to the ground!

GPS is what you're essentially confusing it with... right?

No, he's thinking of a pedometer. You could easily use an accelerometer of sufficient sensitivity to give you the same data a pedometer gives you, i.e., a count of how many times it changes orientation; but you wouldn't have a stride length.

Wolfson DAC

Does anyone know if the new Touch uses the same Wolfson DAC as the first generation Touch?

I don't think I want my ipod moving around that much. It would get really annoying.

Very bad planning on Nike's part if this isn't actually transmitted via Bluetooth. Installing a proprietary chip just so a few people can use it with their overpriced running shoes just doesn't seem worth it, unless Nike paid Apple a huge boatload of cash to do it.

Adding Bluetooth capability would be FAR more useful to many more people.

maybe apple got Nike to pay them a big chunk to put a compatible chip in. Then, apple picks a multipurpose chip. Later apple upgrades the firmware and unleashes a "fully operational Bluetooth battle station".

Cheaper to put in a 'common bluetooth' chip than some low volume proprietary solution, doesn't mean they're going to do anything with it unfortunately.
Will have to wait a see.

Apple should have used gps and their own software to create an awesome excercise/trekking (or just 'interesting info') program. Getting back home and looking at your exact route/speeds etcetc on proper maps would be far more interesting than just buying into some shoddy looking nike system (I've never used it).

Where is the innovation?!

unified platform

It would seem to me that, for ease of support and development apple has tried to keep iPhone and ipod touch features very similar, except for the obvious cell phone functions. Even GPS is available on touch and iPhone models which lack GPS antennae.

So, maybe the reason apple has hamstrung Bluetooth on iPhone is that they've been planning to add it to touch.

This is just a dream, but maybe now (after they fix the current bugs) they'll be able to switch on the firmware support for more expanded bluetooth services on both platforms.

Admittedly, it would help of I knew what I was talking about.

So we finally conclude at least that a Bluetooth chip is the marketed 'inbuilt' Nike+ receiver!

Seems we're talking Entish.....

Maybe the proprietary bluetooth of Nike+ interferes with the Bluetooth in the iPhone. Maybe if Apple were to support the Nike+ on the iPhone, iPhone Bluetooth would have to be disabled when Nike+ is in use. Meaning people could not do Bluetooth Ear Piece while running with Nike+.

If that is the case would that piss you off? (If true, keep in mind you could always use the headphones, which you probably are, to answer calls)

Worst case scenario is that Nike+ not only interferes with the bluetooth built into the iPhone, but what if it interfered with the cellular signal in the iPhone?

I emailed Steve

I just sent an email to El Jobso himself about the future uses of this bluetooth chip, and we'll see what he (or his alternates) say about it

64G chip?

Did anyone follow the link of the part number for the Micron MLC ship? It goes to Micron's 64G chip...

Here's the iFixit page... http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/First-Look/iPod/iPod-Touch-2G/Page-5

It's the third picture, step 15.

Here's the page the link points to... http://www.micron.com/products/partdetail?part=MT29F64G08TAAWP

If you look at the picture, the part number on the chip matches where the link takes you.

Here's the link to the 32G... http://www.micron.com/products/partdetail?part=MT29H32G08GCAH2-15

Am I missing something, or does it seem like there is 64G chip in that model that iFixit disassembled? And does that mean Apple is purposely restricting the amount of memory inside?

The following specs are given for the 8G chip included in the Ipod Touch:

Density: 64Gb
Part Status: Production
RoHS: Yes
Depth: 8Gb
Width: x8
Voltage: 3.3V
Package: TSOP
Pin Count: 48-pin
Bits/Cell: MLC
I/O: Common
Op. Temp.: 0C to +70C

Note that the depth is listed as 8Gb. No, Apple is not purposefully scamming its customers. Why would they do that?

Yes you are missing something mainly the difference between bits and bytes! Flash memory is sized by the number of bits available. You can divide that number by 8 to get the number of bytes available.

What is more interesting is that I did not see a 256Gb chip listed after quickly looking over the site.

I assume someone has already tested this but I did anyway. The folks at the local Apple store were actually willing to help with the test using an iPhone earphone with microphone. We tested the iPod Nano and Touch. The Nano shows a menu item that allows you to record voice messages while the Touch does not yet have this application included in its system.

At present, the iPod Touch V.2 does not have the ability to record voice messages. According to the original post
This suggests that the external microphone support is likely true.
there is an additional wire and it is assumed to be for this feature but no software is yet included.

Well as for the mic in.... in the keynote while showing the accessories for the iPod touch SJ clearly previewed both the front and the BACK (with the mic) of the new headphones.....

Well I certainly didn't think they were SCAMMING us... I was just pointing something out, hoping someone could point out the mistake in my logic. Thanks for clearing that up.

Maybe they use a different manufac. for the higher size. I noticed the nanos use Toshiba flash

Is this an accessory, or does this come with the iPod?

I can't believe the new Nano is only 36grams (vs 42.9 for the 3g)
I still find it ugly but wow is that thing small and light, it's incredible.
I do so wish they could have made fatty 10% thinner and 10% lighter instead but that's life.

Also, you Americans have it good >: ( there's a 'worldwide' (retailers words) shortage on the 16gb here in Australia - none have come out, period and it's 7-10 bus days on apple.com for ordering - retails stores ONLY have the 8gb.
Rumour has it all the 16gb's went to the states! :/

Anyone ever wonder what the new product they were talking about was during financial results ? .. they talked about a product refresh. and the ipods fall into that category.
