i like it how you buy a ipod and then a week later they come out with a new one....
oh well but im happy with my itouch. i only wish i had a external controller for it because its an inconvenience to take the ipod out of my pocket and look at it and have to touch it up to get the right volume or next song. you know what im saying?

you have GOT to be freakin kidding me. first of all, if you're posting on this site, i dont see how its possible that youve missed all the articles that have been posted here for the past god knows how many months about the new ipods that are soon coming out. second of all, its been a year since the touch was release, pretty sure its about time for an upgrade. you should write a nasty letter to apple telling them to stop releasing new products because YOU stupidly bought a new one this week.

I just read from the spec sheet that this chip uses a single antenna for wifi, bluetooth, and FM. Therefore, the antenna required to enable all these features is ALREADY in the unit since it has wifi now. All that remains is for Apple to turn on these features in a software update. Also, this chip DOES support A2DP stereo bluetooth output.

"The BCM4325 implements the highly sophisticated InConcert radio
coexistence algorithms and hardware mechanisms allowing for an
extremely collaborative coexistence scheme along with coexistence
support for external radios (such as GPS, WiMax, or Ultra Wide-Band
radio technologies, as well as cellular radios) and a single shared
Antenna."

Ah, Thank you! Should have read a bit more at the link.

I just wonder why Jobs/Apple didn't announce they have the tech in place and are going to use it soon for AMAZING THINGS!!

Jobs probably walked off stage and as the music played he face palmed, having forgotten his "ONE MORE THING."

iPhone already has Bluetooth chip to support the single ear Phone-ear piece.
But with Bluetooth making its way into iTouch where it serves no such function we know that apple definitely has some plans for Bluetooth under the wraps. And if they are planning to open up the Bluetooth on iTouch for Stereo-headphones and Bluetooth-file transfer then it only makes sense that it will trickle down to the iPhone.
Yes, Apple has definite plans for that chip: Nike+. The rest is run away speculation.

By the way, I've heard from a trusted industry source that Stereo Bluetooth headphones are not very reliable and it may take until Bluetooth 3.0 to make them work properly.

I doubt Apple plans to make 'amazing' things out of the Bluetooth!

But your latter comment.... rather than the bluetooth I guess it was the Shuffles in new colors....

P.S.: Thanks Greg!

Becuase the chip is there for the Nike+ only, it's not bluetooth, just becuase that chip may/could be used in some bluetooth applications along with other hardware doesn't mean it is in this case... as others have pointed out and as the Engadget link points out, it's the chip that controls the Nike+ transmitter, nothing more, nothing less... don't expect it ever to do anthing else!

Wtf

uhg apple is really wierd about this bluetooth on there products.

Why isn't it on the iphone? and none the less... if you put the chip in why not use it?

They have it on ALL THERE MACS why not on the other products most people call "portable macs"

Could be-the hardware is present, all they need to do is enable it in software-but there's no BT antenna according to iFixit (only a Wi-fi one).

They don't say there's not a bluetooth antenna. they just point out the Wi-Fi one.

When I talked to the iFixit guy, he said that 2.4GHz antennas are very small and often just a trace on the board.

Apple needs to get with the BluTooth program.

I don't know what Apples intention is with respect to BluTooth and iPhone but it is really getting to the point where they have to start clueing developers in. There is a huge number of apps possible if a developer had access to the more popular profiles.

The problem is Apple has dragged out the development of Mobile OS for so long now and under such tight control you or I don't know where they are going. It is a shame really because all they are getting in the app store is a bunch of crap apps. It is like they are shooting themselves in the foot.

i have to agree. apple really needs to cut the crap with the bluetooth, this whole secretive thing isnt cute anymore, its just annoying

Yes, that's what many have assumed but what's not clear to me (and this is an honest question) -- does that mean it no longer functions as a bluetooth chip? Are the functions mutually exclusive?

Also if they could activate BT later I'm sure they would need to pay a license fee for every single iPod Touch already sold.

I don't get why MacRumors thinks there is some big mystery surrounding iPod Touch compatibility with the new mic. It clearly says on the page "The remote and mic are supported only by iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (120GB), and iPod touch (2nd generation)."

How is that confusing?

Yes, the new iPod Touch supports the mic.

My exact thoughts on the matter. Thank you for getting it across for me.

I still think it's not 100% clear. (Apple also wrote that MobileMe updates would push instantly from the computer or whatever and they changed it after the fact.)

No where on the iPod Touch does it say it will take audio in. The accessory page is the only page that says it will.

As for the Broadcom chip.... after digging out I kinda (all this hardware is gibberish to me) figured that the chip utilizes the bluetooth to communicate with the Nike+ pod but, here's the catch, it uses a special modded firmware (or was it baseband:confused:) which ensures a low power consumption by the chip and hence............. the low frequency?

In any case it all depends on whom Gizmodo asked? If it truly was an actual educated knowledgeable Apple official then... well its all kaput! <sigh>

I do have to say the iphones bluetooth abilities are lackluster. My car is equipped with SYNC, which does work with the iphone to an amazing extent, BUT other older phones can do even more. My car has the ability to convert text messages to voice audio, and send simple responses, but my phone can't handle it. Heck, my phone from 5 years ago could handle SMS via bluetooth. My car could stream and control the music on my iphone via bluetooth if only the iphone would let it. It is frustrating that MICROSOFT has developed an amazing car interface for my iphone, but is crippled by apples lack of basic features standard in other phones for some time now.

"This suggests that the external microphone support could be true."

Suggests is a rather poor choice of words when you look at the description of the new in-ear headset with microphone that has been released... Its specifically states it works with the new iPod Touch, Nano and the 120gb Classic which all now include Voice Note support.
