It's true. I first owned an iPod Touch and I got sick of carrying around both my phone and my iPod everywhere. It felt like I was carrying around 10 different things in each pocket. I just had no room. So I made the upgrade to the iPhone and it was well worth it.

that is the most common case but if you only want to use it at home then there's no point in buying an iphone. but i understand your point and have to say that the iphone is a lot more convenient than the ipod

Agreed. At home I actually use my iPod Touch more than my iPhone. Those damn angry birds... It makes procrastination so easy! And instead of always killing my iPhone battery, I just kill the iPod Touch battery. And for what iPod Touch's do.. the price is a steal in my eyes. Before I got my iPhone 4, I basically used it as a laptop whenever I was to lazy to actually turn mine on.

Here is my advice...
Before I was on AT&T and got the iPhone, I used an HTC Hero with an iPod Touch. And it worked, but was just a pain in the ass to carry around two devices.

I bought my last 2 phones on Craigslist, and while I understand your concern there are plenty of trustworthy people out there.

Ask the person to meet at starbucks (wi-fi) and make sure everything works, camera, Internet, speakers, make a test phone call, and honestly if everything works, buy it.

You could proly get an iPhone 3GS for $250 on CL.

My laptop is rarely on due to my ipad. So the ipad is good for home surfing and the ipod touch is just nce to have. At least for me. :D

I was in the same situation as the OP for a while, didn't want to make the jump to an iP4 as the new iPhone is out this summer. Did consider getting an iPod Touch to go with my dumb phone (Moto KRZR K1) which cost peanuts to run, £5 a month with 200 mins (don't use many minutes TBH) and Unlimited Text (which I use mostly).

Obviously the drawback would be the need to have a WiFi signal to use some apps and surf but that could be easily solved with MiFi and carry these extra devices - not a pain as I carry my record bag most of the time. I have WiFi at home and work anyway.

In the past, it's never bothered me carrying different devices as I used to keep a phone, PSP and iPod Shuffle in my bag. But when I'm out on a nightout, I don't like the idea of carrying an expensive phone so always been happy with a dumb phone.

I was just about to go the iPhone route but someone made that decision for me when I won an annual award at my work. I received a nice gift: an iPod Touch 4 (8GB) and £200 gift voucher which I used some of to purchase some iTunes gift vouchers! Win-win ;) :D

After 3 weeks with the iPod, I absolutely love iOS device and will probably end up getting an iPhone this summer. The iPod I'll use still for games and a useful AirPlay device it'll make too at home.

I'm thinking about it, but to be totally honest with you, buying from craigslist without any warranty scares the hell out of me.

BTW, I hope no one felt offended from my previous considerations. I was just doing some math, but I do agree that situations are different. If I had to work on the go, no doubt it would be worth it.

understandable.. however, find someone that has a 3GS with warranty. Apple still sells them, so they're bound to show up somewhere!

i think my suggesting is ideal because for an extra $30-$50, you get an all-in-one, contract free and you can continue using the same plan that you're using now.

not to mention, if you end up with any extra money in the future, you could always add data to that.

Well yeah of course an iPad would be great around the house. But this guy doesn't have money for that. He's talking about picking up the iPod. :p

If you are in the USA then you are going to have to get a data plan unless you buy an unlocked iPhone and use t-mobile.
So I am not sure what the point is of buying a phone on craigslist when you can buy a 3GS for $49 from AT&T or wait until this summer and buy a iPhone 4 from verizon or AT&T for $99.
And the data plan is either $15, $25 (AT&T) or $30 (Verizon unlimited), so the additional cost would $360, $600, or $720.
So a new 3GS would $360 + $49 vs $229 for a iPod touch. The phone service you would be paying regardless.

I think you made a great point. A refurbished Iphone from AT&T is 19$! Also, I think your math makes a lot of sense, and got me thinking. Unfortunately my actual plan with T-Mobile is 29 instead than 39, thus giving an extra 120$ per year (180+120), thus bringing to 600+20 vs. 229.
We'll see, I'm thinking about it.

You know, yeah, you do pay a monthly fee that ads up with the iPhone. But for that monthly fee you get a lot more internet connectivity with your iPhone than you would with your ipod and finding wifi spots (that not all are free so you'd still have to pay to get connectivity there).

I had an ipaq (a non phone PDA) before I had an iphone. I think the thing that made the iphone a lot more indispensable to me was the fact it was pretty much constantly connected where as the ipaq usually was not (wifi was not as prevalent and even as much as it is now, it still would end up mostly being used where I don't have wifi connection). That internet connection allows the item to be a lot more useful (Find the closest theater, find the nearest restaurant, look up an item you are thinking of buying to see reviews, boredom buster/internet surfing where ever you happen to be, facebook checking, being able to be much quicker reached by email).

So, I'd say the monthly fees aren't just going to pay for your iphone, but for having internet in a large area so I don't think it's fair to just add up the monthly fees and say that's the cost of the iphone. You're also paying for a service there (readily available internet). A service that adds a whole lot of functionality to the phone.

And OP, you can also pick Verizon if you don't like AT&T. I'd personally sign a two year with one of them (who ever has best coverage in your area) and get the 4 with contract so it will only be 200/300 depending on size.

Why go with the 4 over the 3GS? It's going to be supported a lot longer. If we go by Apple's pattern, the 3GS is about to get the same treatment when iOS 5 comes out that the 3G did last year. And it's getting close to it's two year old mark where Apple is a lot less supportive of it. So you're going to get a phone that has less than half a year before Apple decides to start phasing it out if you go with the 3GS. And if you do get the 3GS, don't come whining on here if Apple decides to not allow it a lot of features when they release iOS 5. You were on this forum, you should have knowledge of Apple's pattern. And you chose to go with a phone that is going to get the "We'll support it just a little" in just a few months (I got sick of people last year bitching that they just got a 3G and now Apple was phasing it out. Well, it was almost 2 years when you got it. If you wanted a phone that had longer support, you shouldn't have bought a 2 year old design!!)

I was able to find a SEALED 3GS on craigslist the other day. It has a full on year warranty on it. I paid $240. I activated it on AT&T with no contract for $25/month. (9.99 + $15 data).

You can check the warranty from the serial number of any apple device.
