In all fairness and flame me if You feel Im wrong but why should students get discounts period?

Speaking from a teaching standpoint, the discounts help me tremendously. My wife an I are on a pretty tight budget, so it's nice to have the discount there. Should we get a discount just because we're teachers? Maybe not. Maybe so. I would find it hard to believe, if you look at any profession, that somebody doesn't get a break somewhere.

I've always been of the opinion that anything that can be done to help education along, will better our society. Of course, that's taking a look at the larger picture.

I'm curious to know if you think the government shouldn't give low interest rates for student loans? Do students deserve that, just because they are students?

Plase dont get me wrong, I think giving teachers a discount is a good idea. In my opinion giving a 22 year old student a discount to buy a new laptop or iPod is not helping education, Sure the iBook would help BUT I need a laptop for work and i had to pay full price. AND I did not say anything about lower intrest rates for student loans I think every person should have the right to a good education. I live around CMSU I know how things go. Do You think its fair that the local resturants will give a student a discount but not the military?

School is ridiculously expensive. Enough said.

And in regards to things like the iPod, which have no real educational purpose (you can claim you use it for moving documents and whatnot, but be honest, what did you buy it for? Did you need 20GB worth of space to transfer files? 40GB?), maybe it's not about what educational value the product has, but maybe we can look at it as a reward to those who pursue higher education? Just an idea.

A reward? I pay my bills every month and go to work everyday. Why do I still have to pay full price for my iPod?

Well, to be honest, I'd rather reward someone who's working toward an education than someone working toward a paycheck. Not that there's anything wrong with working for a paycheck, but, that's kind of what you're expected to do. You work for the things you want. In school, you work to better yourself.

Not to mention, we pay to go to school, you get paid to go to work 😉

I don't think I stressed this enough. You reward IS your paycheck. You get paid for going to work, and after food/bills, the money is yours to do with what you want (i.e., buying an iPod).

If I want money to buy things, I have to work ON TOP of going to school. My classes alone take up 25hrs/week, plus a fluctuating amount of study time outside the classroom. It's pretty much a full time job. And the money I do get still has to go toward bills (rent, utilities, car, insurance) and food, but also toward tuition/fees/books. I think you have an unfair advantage here when it comes to buying luxuries like an iPod. So why shouldn't we get a deal?

I'm starting to think you're a little greedy here 😛

(kidding, of course)

most college students I know barely have any money. 15 hours/week of classes (full time in US) requires a lot of time from a student. I personally work an extra 25hrs/week and im at school from 8am to 8pm. of course, many people work a schedule like this and worse, but are getting paid most of the time. The time students are in classes and studying arent paid in money. If they are getting no financial aid, or no help from their parents, thats a lot of money they have to pay (even if its in form of loans) for tuition. I know I dont want to be 30k in debt once I graduate, so I pay it off per semester. Not to mention the price of books ($400/semester on average!).
So students just dont have much money, but Apple wants them to use their computers, so they lower the prices for them. I would imagine thats the reason.

Now as for the ipod, im not sure why they are discounted. Although it can be used as a usb drive, its main function is entertainment (music player). I agree with the computer prices (a full-time worker can afford it easier than a full time students, its that simple), but with the ipod discounts im a little confused

if You are in school getting an education to get a better paying job You should get a discount? Why cant You get a discount if You are on wellfair and just dont want to work?

I'm not sure I understand your argument here...

Luxuries, exactly You dont need an iPod to get an education. What about the people with kids that cant afford to go to school, working to keep food in their mouths it sounds to me like You are the greedy one

My family has always barely made it from paycheck to paycheck. My father is disabled and my mother works in retail. My parents can't exactly write out checks to my university ever semester. I'm getting through college by financial aid/multiple jobs. If I ever have the money to afford such luxuries, it's because I work my ass off everyday.

Don't make assumptions. Just because I'm a college student doesn't mean I come from a priveledged family. If you work for it, you can afford college. I'll be paying off the loan debt for this education for the rest of my life, but it's worth it.

But you could get the EDU pricing by taking a class at your community college (or any school that is on the list of institutions that Apple extends the discount to). Surely there is one class that you might find fun or useful to take.

Discounts for certain affiliations is a choice by the establishment that gives them. We can go down a very long road on the various discounts given to different groups, but that is a better topic for the Political Forums.

Aha, I don't know if anyone else sees it this way but... You're saying people go to work for a paycheck, whereas a student goes to college to better themselves. However, I would say students actually go to college so they can get a better job, which has a bigger paycheck. Really, both situations are the same, although I do believe students should get a discount because of the much larger financial strain due to the huge cost of attending college.

Discount

Wasn't the original idea discounts on iPods? I mean, come on, the largest edu discount on an iPod is $30...
And Spock, to be perfectly blunt, did you even go to college? You have any idea what it's like to be in grad school, over $35,000 in debt, working full time and going to school three plus nights a week until nine? I'll be damned if I wasn't stoked when I got $20 off my new mini.

Well, sadly you're right on this for the vast majority of students. Personally I couldn't care about what job I get after all of this is over. For that matter, I've entertained thoughts of becoming a professional student 😀

yeah...........
