Sounds like you aren't using the right key combination. On a mac, use option-click, not command-click.

THANKS, macbookairman! Not a technical problem, just a reading problem, LOL. I read variations on those instructions in multiple places, but somehow replaced the option with command in my head and then always "saw" what I expected. Thanks for explicitly correcting my error! Updating now...

Felix Bruns file for 3.1.3 is corrupted. So download 3.1.2, and you don't have to do a restore, you can do an update using the 3.1.2 file. After you do that, 3.1.3 will come up on itunes as the newest version, and you can update via itunes itself.

Worked like a charm! (I went the 3.1.2 route, which then easily updated to 3.1.3). Thanks!! Sure enough, Farmville on a 1st Generation Touch. It works!

i tried all this. it told me that i couldnt use that update because the firmware is not compatible. itunes is also telling me that 1.1.5 is the most current update. im confused.

so i downloaded a 2.0 firmware but its a zip file. i see someone saying to change the extension, tried and didnt work. i know it would work on my trusty mac thats at home, but right now im on a *barf* windows machine. not sure how to make it work on a windows machine.

Just to be sure, are you right clicking the zip file, clicking properties and then changing it from .zip to .ipsw?

ive never updated worried it would wipe out my jailbreak. and i really didnt care much cause i use it for an ipod and not much more than that. the other day i kinda thought "what the heck, lets update." i also would like textplus on it, i dont have cell service at work. kinda sick of lugging the ipad every where.

Many thanks to the contributors of this thread; got my 1st gen iPod touch updated with 3.1.2 (from ver 1) by downloading from felixbruns, then updating to newer version through iTunes. Worked great! Thanks!

This method worked perfectly for me too. I was initially skeptical about the German felixbruns site as it was posted without commentary or explanation, but further research indicated it's legit and indeed, it works! Their version of 3.1.3 is corrupt (just loads a screen of gibberish instead of downloading a file) but the 3.1.2 works great and its simple and fast (practically automatic) to update from there.

iPod touch users with a 1st Gen. running on 2.2.1 firmware and using itunes 9.2

For iPod touch users with a 1st Gen. running on 2.2.1 firmware and using itunes 9.2 you have to download the past firmware first which is 3.0/7A341 from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ then install it using itunes by holding shift and clicking restore; after this process is done you will then be prompted in itunes if you would like to update to the new available 3.1.3 firmware and it will work fine. After that if you wish to jailbreak using you new 3.1.3 firmware you can download spirit from http://rapidshare.com/files/403136973/Spirit.Fix.iTunes.9.2.rar.html and then extract files and run the spirit.exe file this will jailbreak your iPod.

Looks like apple is pulling a MS by not supporting their old products and forcing "upgrades" ;)

I think lots of people think that, but it really isn't true in my opinion. Apple has certainly done that sort of thing in the past, but I think in this case 3.0 and 4.0 both have added so much, that it really is too much for the 1st and 2nd Gen devices to handle with their limited processor speed and RAM.

I upgraded my 2nd Gen iPod Touch to 4.0, and then jailbroke it to enable multitasking and home screen backgrounds. Talk about miserable. The thing was so incredibly slow. The 2nd Gen iPod Touch has (I think) 156mb Ram, which is terrible compared to the iPhone 4's 512 MB. And the processsor speeds have increased a lot too. They've really started building these devices with speed and gaming in mind.

I don't think Apple foresaw the huge interest in gaming/apps on the original iPod Touches and iPhones, which is why they are so underpowered. (And why Apple was so resistant to an app store at first.)

Just my theory.

You have described my situation exactly. But how do I get the 3.0/7A341 firmware you mentioned? When I click on the felixbruns link it prompts me to select which iPod I have but then I just click the "Update" button. There is no way for me to choose an older firmware. The bottom of the page says "By clicking Download, you will be redirected to an Apple Inc. server. The list of available firmwares is automatically updated and always the most recent version"

Thanks for your help!

Windows: While holding the Ctrl key, click restore or update.
Mac: While holding Option key, click restore or update.

Restore is recommended but this options erases all contents of iPod touch.

Update only updates the firmware and keeps all files on iPod.

Please backup before choosing either options. Good Luck!

You don't have an iPod, you have an iPod touch.

You don't want to look in the "iPod" list. It only covers the iPod Classic, iPod Mini, iPod Nano, and iPod Shuffle.

You do want to look at the "iPhone/iPod touch/iPad" list. It includes all the released firmware versions for all generations of all three types of these devices.

Thank you! I was afraid there was something obvious I was missing. I guess getting the update is worth looking like an idiot.
