Got my 2G Touch - 6 days ago. Downloaded a dozen apps and outside of 1 issue luv the gadget. (Had 1st gen since day 1- son now has it)

My issue is the battery life. For instance on a FULLY charged touch wireless off - I boarded the plane and played "wurdy" for about 2 hours. The touch then said I had 20% and then 10% battery life. I did not listen to songs or anything else. I proceeded to stop playing and listened to music for the next 30 minutes until it died. SO did not quite make my 3 1/2 hour flight.

Next day - recharged and ready to go - played "spore" for about 30 minutes - at which point I got the 20% battery life warning. switched to music and played that for the next two hours. Then died.

Recharged and bought a battery back up for the flight home - played wordy WHILE listening to music at the same time. Lasted 2 hours 10 minutes then died.
EDIT:
Have started a Poll on battery life. Please vote.

Thanks

My 1st gen touch was pretty good for 4-6 hours between video and music and some wi fi surfing. Never downloaded games etc for it.

Anyone else having battery issues - do I have a bum touch?

Settings-general-Location services OFF

See if that helps a bit, certain apps will eat battery quickly, but what you have described seems slightly abnormal.

On an unrelated note, do you have a screen protector on your touch?

Thanks will try that - figured games would eat battery life - just not quite as fast as they seem to do.

No screen protector - tried a couple and didnt like them. Do have the belkin sleeve - which i like quite a bit. Was having trouble holding it - very thin. 1st gen has a screen protector - but it was a very thin one I ordered off of the bay about 6 months ago. My screen really never seemed to be an issue. Just got the protector cause the son that now has it slops food over it and such:)

Actually, if you really want to see if your 2G is having issues, fully charge the 1g and play Wordy and see what happens,

1G has a few hours shorter rated life (make sure it's 2.1 if you have paid for the update) and should help give you an idea on what's going on

i hear ya

i just returned my brand new ipod touch 2 and got a new one, no questions asked, at the store because the battery life was terrible (even just listening to music) and my apps would not open at all. got a lemon way back when i had a second gen ipod original. they kept sending me to the genius bar and i learned my lesson then. better off going back in and saying, 'listen i paid 400 for this thing and it's not working.' squeaky wheel....

Hmmmm...Cant find the fetch new data. Will look for it.

Already have the 1st gen charging to see if it will behave the same way with games...

Just wondered if anyone had played games and what their battery life was like?

What does the Location Service do? Is it for the Map app or something?

Basically if you have like a Movies app it will find where you are and suggest theaters around you

I have the same issue. Charged my 2G Touch and played "Cro Mag Rally." The battery life lasted just as long as yours. I'll try it with the Fetch Data and Location Services off. I also turned brightness down a bit to see if that helps too.

Anybody else have this same issue when playing games?

Okay - Have turned off location, wi fi and fetch/push data. Played spore - got 1 hour 11 minutes before it died.

Played wurldy on my gen 1 touch - lasted well over 2.5 hours - and now am playing music on my gen1 - still going.

Recharged gen 2 touch and started just playing music - into hour 3 - but already had the 20% battery life.

Clearly I am getting LESS battery life on the 2G than the 1G.

So either I have a bum battery on the 2G - or we are all getting similar battery life and dont realize it. Probably dont try and play games for 2-3 hours solid - hey I was on a plane - so it was my entertainment. Tomorrow gonna do some more tests with video.

ANyone else - what are you game playing battery times like?

DOnt want to return it just to get the same issue. (bought at costco - so at least not much hassle). I learned my lesson with the 1G and bad screens - wanted an easy return path in case there were issues.

Should I start another thread on gaming/battery life? Really want to find out if this is typical or not...

Probably should so it catches peoples interest. I'd like to know if this is a common issue or not while playing games.

Make sure "fetch new data" is off as well under Settings

If wi fi is off, which OP says it is, then fetch new data shouldn't work to begin with.

^ Seconded. Is everyone getting the same problem?!

I just bought mine a few days ago and am also having the same problems. I'm very disappointed that Apple would release a product with this issue since this isn't the first time they've had battery problems.

I plan on taking mine back to the store to exchange it.

Ditto, I am having very poor battery life. Use it less than 2 hours per day and have to charge it daily. Seems to drain even when off.

I've had mine for about a week, and the batter life is pathetic. I have mine engraved -- is it possible for me to return the damn thing?

Well I thought it was just playing games that was causing the battery life to be so poor. Actually anything other than listening to music seems to drain it pretty quickly. Have not had enough time to really test it as games were the first things I tried.

But now can confirm that wi fi browsing while listening to music, checking email etc will also drain the battery in less than four hours.

Thought I had a bad touch - maybe they all are this way. Anyone getting more than 4-5 hours if doing stuff other than listening to music?

Please vote in the pole: Battery Life

Both of my friends who got the 2nd gen are complaining about the battery life also. I guess it is more common. My gen 1 does fine on battery life. I'm sure Apple will fix it. They should.

i can't post in the games poll because i haven't just played games yet, but i did go on a road trip this weekend - 5 hours up + 5 back. so that (music), plus some surfing, photo viewing and i'm still sitting over 50%. on a 2g.

I have a new 32GB model and can confirm that battery life, when playing games is dismal. I'm currently testing battery life when playing music, wifi off and will post results.

game consumes lots of battery life. if I play monkey ball for three hours until drain, it will be lucky enough. I think that three hours or less is maximum life for game. but others like music, video, internet surfing is almost match what apple told. they never told us battery life for game. I can't find the fact on apple page.

Have you tried doing a music only test? power the device up to full charge, turn off wifi, fetch & location services. Start playing all songs, press the button on top to switch off the screen and check on it at say 6, 12, 24, 30 hours and see how it is doing (check using the earphones only). Music doesnt use the screen hence the max battery life.

Video should be next best, then gaming, the more bits you use the better it should be. Maybe also just leave it charging all day, to ensure the battery is really at 100%.

I'm definately NOT getting 36 hours of just music as Apple states on my 32gb 2nd gen Touch. I'm not going to complain though. This is one of the sweeeeeeeeeeeeetest toys i've ever owned. I just finished fully charging it. I'll see if it lasts through the day at work, then i'll let you guys know if it lasted through the day.
