I don't own the 2G touch, but I did own the 1g touch. I recently upgraded to the iPhone 3g. While I had the 1G Touch though, I went into the Apple store to check out the new 2G touches and it seemed to me that they were snappier... especially noticeable when switching between home pages. I did the side by side with my old 1G and that's what it seemed like. The 2g switches pages really smoothly, but the 1G is choppy by comparison. My guess is that they opened up the throttle on the processor. I had read in other places that it's a 600mhz processor that's throttled back to 400mhz for battery and heat reasons. My guess is that during game play where processor usage is more important, they must ramp up the speed which would drain the battery quite a bit faster. We may never know though b/c Apple doesn't like to release those kinds of details.

I hear you. I sent my iTouch 32g 1st gen. back when I heard the 2nd gen. was coming out, and I'm still waiting on people's reviews to reorder (though I think I will). Does the big-storage Classic get great battery life? That would be an option for me, but I want to be able to do audio-in recording, so that pretty much limits me to the Touch, no?

As for the mic, I'm looking for a small bud mic to plug in, something to do interviews with.

http://www.target.com/Philips-iPhone-Microphone-Adapter/dp/B0015C5CSM

That would work perfectly for you I think, just disconnect it and use the speaker to replay your recordings on the go. I just bought it last week myself. As a bonus feature, the button on it works just like the button on Apple's overpriced headphones+mic set... During music playback: one press for pause, two presses for next track, three to repeat track.

As for battery life, I mentioned I'd be interested in testing how long it'd last during music playback with the screen always on, and in my first informal test seemed to last about 12 hours... So less than half what it should last with the screen off I guess? I wasn't keeping an eye on it so I'm gonna have to re-run the test. If I get similar results I'll probably just use that same mic/cable to control my iPod on the car during long-ish trips (rather than keeping the lock off and the screen always on).

My 2nd gen. touch lasts for about 2 days on music, 5 hours on video, 2.5 hours on continuous internet connection such as gtalk which shows when you type. Altogether, i average about 6 hours a day continuos as i use the internet a lot and play games and keep the screen on most of the time cause i take notes on it.

Battery life when sleeping

I have a 2G touch. I have been having the problem that I fully charge it and then use it maybe for 1/2 hour (listening to music). Then I put it to sleep. I pick it up 2 days later and it is completely dead. Is this normal? Seems like it ought to last longer than this.

I would say that you are connected to WIFI and have either fetch or push on. Also turn off location services when you are not using your iPT.

I've been testing the battery life on mine and I've seen some pretty surprising results... When testing with the auto-lock off (and the screen always on) it would only last for about 12 hours of continuous music playback, and that's with the brightness turned almost all the way down even.

However, when I turned the lock on (and thus the screen remained off) it actually lasted just over 48 hours of continuous music playback! I honestly didn't expect it to even reach Apple's suggested mark of 36 hours, much less surpass it by that much.

This was with volume at 50% (plenty loud for my headphones) and WiFi off. I kept an eye (well, an ear rather) to it for all two days and music was playing the whole time. My 2g 16GB touch's only about a quarter full right now but I don't think that makes any difference (one looped/shuffled playlist containing all the music on it was playing the whole time).

I guess the lesson is that any screen use, even the static screen during playback, will consume anywhere from three to four times as much juice in a similar span of time as simple music playback; and I imagine Apple assumes a good amount of screen usage for fiddling/song selection with their 36 hr estimate. Personally I haven't noticed a significant drop in battery life while leaving it in sleep (locked) for a couple days either, though I do try to turn the WiFi off when doing that.

If you're getting substantially less than those 36 hours either you're literally browsing on the screen to select every other song for 12 hours straight or you've simply got a bum unit imo. Make sure you're locking it or putting it to sleep when simply playing music though...

Oh and fyi, I had auto-brightness on for the first test (which I repeated twice, got 12 hours +/- 30m each time), though I doubt it mattered much since it was in a dark or normally-lit room the entire time... I do notice the auto-brightness working ocasionally, though mostly when I tilt the iPod away from a light source in a dimly lit room, I normally have the brightness turned down pretty low too.

I actually let it die down all the way in between charges for these couple tests, even though I normally avoid doing that as I've heard it isn't the best thing for the battery.

i think some are definitely better than others.

my first touch lasted about 1.5 hours with (basic) games, about 16 hours with music and about 3 hours with movies.

I then had it replaced at the apple store and my new one has a phenominal battery. I can easily get a good 5 hours with basic games like bejeweled or solitaire, about 3-4 hours with games like motochaser, days and days of use with music alone, and just under 6 hours with movies. Wifi and push obviously turned off, and i find that downloading apps directly to the device tends to eat a lot of battery.

Overall i am amazed at the difference between the two.:)

Speaking of battery life - I just got my Touch last night and was wondering something:

Is there anywhere on it to see how much battery life remains? I mean besides the little icon in the top right corner, obviously.

I noticed when you plug it in to charge that it shows how far along the charge is... is there anything like that you can check without plugging it in??

Thnkx.

Not that I know of, there's probably a better meter available if you jailbreak it but bone stock I don't think so. Even the large meter that shows up on the locked screen when you're charging it isn't very reliable anyway... 'Least on mine the first 50% after being plugged in will seem to recharge in less than an hour, then it takes maybe two hours to fill up the rest, and sometimes it seems like it spends an oddly lengthy amount of time on the last 10%.

FYI, I've tested my iPod touch a second time, and while I didn't get the full 48 hours of music playback I got the first time around, I still got a surprising 44 hours or so of continuous music playback on a single charge. So yeah, I'm pretty satisfied with it... I'm kinda surprised some iPods would last as little as 20 hours or less when just playing music, that's no small difference.

On the car I plan to use that Philips adapter I linked before and have the auto-lock on, to conserve battery... If someone else is riding shotgun or I'm at a stoplight or whatever I can just flick the lock off and fiddle with it at will (I have my iPod touch on a universal-type mount which keeps it in view of the dashboard area).

Just gotta figure out whether I wanna clip that mic/switch on the Philips adapter/cable to somewhere on the dash or simply clip it to my pant leg when I get on the car (07 Civic coupe), hehe.

this battery issues isn't as great as i hoped it would be too, i would have thought it would last a long time while surfing but yesterday i was doing some surfing some games and some music and battery died.
i really was hoping for better tho after all still very impressed with my new toy.

Gift idea for my wife

My wife complaint about her battery life for her 2nd Generation itouch, especially she went to a trip. I found this battery pack from http://www.imaxpower.com and bought her imp500 itouch battery. She love it... I am glad.

Do you want it (Yes/No)? (Most people would ask "do you need it," but that doesn't apply to the touch because no one really needs it). Would you like to play a variety of touch screen games and use apps (Yes/No)? Would you (seriously now) regret your $230 purchase (Yes/No)? How much music do really you have/listen to (A Lot/less than 100 songs)? (Really think about the next one) will you really watch videos or look at photos (Yes/No)?

If you answered "No" to any of the above questions, maybe an iPod nano is a better fit for you. If you're just jealous another friend has one, maybe you should consider other reasons like the ones above. If you want something portable that maybe you could do school work on, google "netbook."

It's a Li-ion battery, and they use a constant-current/constant-voltage charging method. i.e., at first the current is held steady at the max rate, whatever that is (1 amp?), but once the voltage of the battery rises to a certain point, then the voltage is held constant there, and the battery takes whatever current it wants. Towards the end, when the no load battery voltage is just under the charging voltage, there is very little charging current going into it. It's that last 10 percent, and it takes a lot longer to go in than the 10 percent from 20 to 30 (or 50 to 60). You're screen meter is probably telling the truth. Unless it takes a really long time, and then, yeah, maybe it's not calibrated properly.

My Battery Test Results

Hi guys,

I have been wondering if I have a cruddy battery or not. Apple's estimate says 36 hrs. of music playback time, but I am currently doing a battery test for my 2G iPod touch which I got 2 weeks ago.

I started the test after 20-30 minutes of games and YouTube videos. Before that, the battery was at 100%. I began the test with wi-fi on and auto-brightness set. The wi-fi was on but it was not connected to anything. Just in case, Push was off. It has an auto-screen shut-off after 5 minutes.

So far, it has been 23hrs of constant music playback and the battery is in the red section.

I have been playing Welcome to the Jungle and repeating it over and over.

Is my battery screwed up or not??? I am pretty freaked out and I don't want to go to Apple and have them replace it with a crappy, refurbished one.

iPod Touch

Guys,

I think that Apple is being cunning when they make the battery last for 36 hrs. I think that when they tested it, they turned off all the features (wi-fi, auto-brightness, push, etc.) and just shut off the screen while playing it. My test was/is conducted after a 5-10% battery drain and with wi-fi to simulate the battery life I should get.

Try testing it again, with battery charged too 100%, and turn off WiFi, Location, and Fetching while still on the charger. Then, take it off and instantly start playing music at medium level, with the screen off, then post your results in this thread.
I know for a fact that Apple will replace it with a brand new iPod touch if battery life gets to less than half of what is estimated(36 hours).
(Also has to be under warranty)
Just schedule a Genius Bar appointment and bring it in.
Hope that helps.

iPod Touch

Alright,

I will test it again once it finishes. I will be gone to my uncle's house for the next week, so I will try to do it when I come back. I am already way past half the 36 hrs. I am currently at 24. Got it 2 weeks ago so I have a long time left of warranty. Do you think that I got a faulty iTouch or is it fine. My whole family is yelling at me for being over obsessed on the iTouch, and I am beginning to think it is fine.

iPod Touch

I am sorry guys,

I am too exhausted to stay up all night and find out about the battery. I will stay up for another hour, and since it is estimated to be 36hrs, hopefull it will be alive in the morning. Sorry guys.

Hey guys

I'm not really happy with my battery life on my touch 2g either. It lasts no more than four hours with ZERO brightness but use of Internet for the most part continuously with occasional music.

Is that normal?

I have no problems with my battery. I've been browsing the web for about two hours now and the battery still reads full. When I listen to music it lasts the 36 hours like Apple said. More or less.

Yesterday I decided to see how good of an alarm my iPhone would be (my power went out a few days ago and I've been too lazy to reset my clocks). So, with my fully charged iPod Touch 2G that I just got for Christmas, I turn on the alarm feature. Auto-lock is off, Wi-Fi is on, Location Services is on, Fetch Data is on, but the screen was turned off. I pressed the home button so [I think] that quit all of my applications, so nothing was running. My mom wakes me up prior to when my alarm was supposed to go off, but upon checking my alarm... my iPod wasn't on. The battery had apparently died over night (I went to bed at 6:00 AM, she woke me up at 12:00 PM... so with no music or anything, it died in six hours... possibly less, because I have no idea when it actually died during the night). Is it really normal for Wi-Fi, Location Services, and Fetch Data to drain the battery THAT much?

You can guess at their motives... or you can look on the specs page where they clearly state the conditions which they tested the iPod Touch in.
