my experience with ipods is that battery life always exceeds the stated spec. my first gen was rated for 22 hours i think and for continuous music with a little internet, it never got less than 26 hours and up to 28.

i have not tested my 2g as i need to use it every day now but im sure it would get way more than the stated 36 hour limit.

The Real Problem with Battery Life and Ipod Touch

The real problem for me with the Ipod touch 2G is its too good. You may think this is a bit weird, but with all the cool apps such as mail and internet as well as games, we like it so much that the battery can't cope. Still, i have problems with my ipod touch battery- i haven't done any tests, but i've had it 10 days and charged it 7 times approx, without using it constantly.:(

You should complain to Apple :p. But really, my iPod's battery life got better after 2.2. Also, you have to keep charging your iPod until it really is fully charged. A lot of the charge lies in the first few segments of the meter.

thanks will try that

Got my 2G Touch - 6 days ago. Downloaded a dozen apps and outside of 1 issue luv the gadget. (Had 1st gen since day 1- son now has it)

My issue is the battery life. For instance on a FULLY charged touch wireless off - I boarded the plane and played "wurdy" for about 2 hours. The touch then said I had 20% and then 10% battery life. I did not listen to songs or anything else. I proceeded to stop playing and listened to music for the next 30 minutes until it died. SO did not quite make my 3 1/2 hour flight.

Next day - recharged and ready to go - played "spore" for about 30 minutes - at which point I got the 20% battery life warning. switched to music and played that for the next two hours. Then died.

Recharged and bought a battery back up for the flight home - played wordy WHILE listening to music at the same time. Lasted 2 hours 10 minutes then died.
EDIT:
Have started a Poll on battery life. Please vote.

Thanks

My 1st gen touch was pretty good for 4-6 hours between video and music and some wi fi surfing. Never downloaded games etc for it.

Anyone else having battery issues - do I have a bum touch?

Did you turn down the backlight cause that can kill the battery so fast, try that and if you dont get on WI-FI that much then turn off "JavaScript" "Plug-ins" "Block Pop-ups" from settings and then go to safari.:apple:

i have a 2g touch, listening to music i've never had the battery go below full, when fully charging it and then listening to music, when I play apps the battery does deplete, but still lasts for 5 or 6 hours, try taking it to the apple store and have them take a look at it

yeah it gets about 40 hours

iPod touch 2G battery life

I purchased my ipod 2G last Thursday secondhand. I am happy with the device and have been using it quite a bit over the bank holiday weekend. I did not purchase this to playing music. I liked the idea of being able to surf the net online wireless in my home any where in the house and not having to have a laptop on my lap and also to playing the odd game on. My ipod 2g has been charged approx 3-4 times over the weekend. But they were not full charges. I have been on it over 2 hours this morning on the internet and playing the odd game off flight control and the battery has approx 50% left. So I think I would get over 4 hours on a full battery. Have posted this info so iPod touch owners can compare there battery life. I am 100% happy with my purchase.

2G Battery life

I bought my 32gb Gen 2 Touch a few weeks ago primarily to use as a small PDA. I don't really have any music on it but listen to and watch lots of streaming material. I was disappointed in the battery life so it was returned and a new unit was purchased. Battery performance is about the same with the new unit. Increased battery capacity would a major improvement for the touch and is likely the best improvement Apple could make to the device. Other than issues with battery life I'm quite pleased with the device. Often times it is no longer necessary to boot up a computer when checking email etc. can be done so effortlessly with the Touch.

I've had my iPod touch 16 Gb for over a month now. My battery goes down in a few hours while on WiFi. It plays for over a day while reading a downloaded book. I've never been able to drain it while playing music for a full day. The only thing that seems to drain my battery is WiFi but I don't play games on it. I use the shopping list app a lot and that has very little effect on battery life.
It is one of my all time best toys!

Is there any chance that, down the road, Apple or another third-party vendor will offer a service, for a fee, to replace the factory battery with a more powerful one?

Hey. I reciently did an expirement in which I tested 115 iTouches on battery life, startup speed, and crash probability.

My results showed that 70% of iTouches (2nd generation) have a battery life between 3-4 hours. 25% of the devices had a battery life over 4 hours. One had a battery life of 8 hours and three had a battery life under 2 hours. To keep the variables at a minimum I had all the devices running the same game (lux touch) for the entire time. I noticed that the iTouches with the longest start up times seemed to have the shortest life.

Can you post some of the results? I'm interested.

Sure, I don't want to post all 115 cause that would take forever but here's the brief overview (33 out of the 115 including the longest and shortest batteries) If there's any other information that you want me to include just tell me. Hope this helps:)

SORRY FOR THE FORMAT, IT"S A PAIN TO READ I KNOW BUT I CANT FIGURE OUT HOW ELSE TO FORMAT IT FOR THIS POST CAUSE IT GOT RID OF ALL THE SPACES THAT I PUT IN.

Average:

Start up Time (with the other 82 results): 26 seconds

Number of Times Crashed: 1

Battery Life: 3-4 hours

Conclusion: The longer the start up time and the more crashes = shorter battery life

That's interesting. Mine starts up in about 25 seconds, so I guess that'd put me in the middle of the range.

EDIT: I timed it and got 19 seconds :D.

Need to test mine more but just clocked the startup time and it was 19sec.

I got mine yesterday and charged it over a total of 7hrs as it was plugged in while installing apps etc and it have last abou 3hrs of game and I got the warning for 20% battery.

Many things gets the optimal battery life after a few recharges so I will keep an eye on it and clock it over the week and see.

Don't gauge your battery life by the time it takes to reach 20%. There's usually more than 20% (by my experience) hiding underneath that warning sign. Besides, the State-of-Charge meter estimates remaining battery by current flow/voltage (not sure which one, they give the same result anyway).

Oh, and also, you should try and keep your iPod at about 40% charge when not in use. It saves overall battery life (the li-ion battery will wear down over time).

Probably should so it catches peoples interest. I'd like to know if this is a common issue or not while playing games.

I am experiencing the same problem... Charged iPod touch 2G in full this morning and played 'Bloons' for about 20 minutes, 'Doodle jump' 5 minutes, and 'Brain Teaser' 3 minutes around noon time. When I turned on the iPod again and tried to search a movie on YouTube this evening, I saw the "battery 20%" sign, which made me confused...
Hope there's something we can do.

After long go arounds with Apple, finally got my 2nd gen. replaced. Battery specs. tested by Apple as follows:

Testing conducted by Apple in August 2008 using preproduction hardware and software. The playlist contained 358 unique audio tracks consisting of content imported from CDs using iTunes (128-Kbps AAC) and content purchased from the iTunes Store (128-Kbps AAC); video content was purchased from the iTunes Store. iPod units were associated to a Wi-Fi network and Auto-Brightness was turned off; all other settings were default. Battery tests are conducted with specific iPod units; actual results may vary. Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced (see www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery). Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information.

Games or other measures don't cut it. 36 hours music, 6 hours video.

Edit:
Replacement Touch gets 39 hours music playback, wifi ON.

when turning on the wifi all the time even though you are not surfing, let's just say you go to bed and left wi-fi turned on, does it eat so much of battery life?

I have the same issue. Charged my 2G Touch and played "Cro Mag Rally." The battery life lasted just as long as yours. I'll try it with the Fetch Data and Location Services off. I also turned brightness down a bit to see if that helps too: me too facing same problems
