Ok so I have a newer generation 8GB MC Model iPod Touch. I was on 3.1.3 jailbroken using spirit. I clicked make my life easier on Cydia while I was on3.1.3. Anyways I ugraded to 4.0 and jailbroke. I didn't like it because most things aren't compatible, so I was like the hell with it and I tried to downgrade back to 3.1.3 and I get the error code 3194. I'm on Windows XP and I've got iTunes 9.2.1. Or maybe I'm still on iTunes 9.2. So if anyone could help me that would be great.

All that post is saying is to redirect your hosts file when downgrading so Cydia's server does the authentication using your shsh blobs on file. If you don't have your shsh blobs on file for the particular firmware that you are trying to downgrade to, IT WON'T WORK.

It doesn't matter what process you follow. I keep seeing, "This worked for me by following these steps..." blah blah blah.

People, just because you followed some steps to get your ipod to downgrade doesn't mean that if someone else follows those steps it will work!

The ONLY reason that you are allowed to downgrade is because you were smart enough to save your shsh blobs to either your computer or to Cydia's server DURING THE TIME THAT APPLE WAS SIGNING THEM.

In other words, if you didn't click "make my life easier" on Cyida homepage back when the firmware that you are trying to downgrade to was the current firmware by apple, your screwed. It doesn't matter what steps you use or what downgrade link you used to find the firmware, if you have shsh blobs on file, it works, if you don't, no dice.

With most people you don't know until you try. So some hose hound on this forum gets his ipod downgraded and next thing you know there is a big thread on how he "got it to downgrade by simply following these steps", the noobs get all excited and the replies start to hit and usually look like this, "I followed your guide but I'm getting an error".

The original posters will follow up with, "Well it worked for me".

It worked for the original poster because he had shsh blobs on file so that process didn't error out for him but it will for everyone else that doesn't have these shsh blobs on file.
I can assure you that I did not have the SHSH blobs backed up. I did this for a friend who wanted a jailbroken iPod. I updated it to iOS4 before I realized that you couldn't jailbreak an iOS MC ipod (this was a couple of months ago). I followed those exact steps and downgraded it fine. He now has a jailbroken iPod touch MC on 3.1.2.

If it doesn't work for anyone else, sorry, but I'm just trying to make some people happy, instead of shutting each and every one of them down, which doesn't help anyone and just makes you look like a bad person

OK, this is what I did to downgrade my friend's iPod touch MC:

Make sure you have iTunes 9.2 and the firmware for 3.1.2. Version 3.1.3 WILL NOT WORK!

You have to edit your 'hosts' file so that Apple can "authorise" the downgrade. Go into Terminal and type:

Code:
sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts
You will be prompted for your password, but you won't see anything if you type. This is normal, just put it in and press enter. TextEdit will appear.

Above where it says 127.0.0.1 localhost, enter a new line and type:

Code:
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
so that now, it looks like this:

Code:
##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1                        localhost
fe80::1%lo0          localhost
(That space between the numbers and the letters is a TAB)

Now save and quit. You can quit Terminal as well.

Your iPod touch should now be in DFU mode, iTunes will tell you that it's in recovery mode and must be restored to use it. This is good.

Alt-Click (or Shift-Click for Windows) the "Restore" button in iTunes, and navigate to the 3.1.2 firmware for your device. Click restore and it should now go and do it's thing.

Please, let me know if this works for you.

I'm using a Toshiba and was wondering what I would put in the command prompt instead of sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts I have a mac too, but didn't want to mess with the itunes just in case something goes wrong.

Next when the text edit appears: Above where it says 127.0.0.1 localhost. All I do is hit enter and type in 4.208.105.171 gs.apple.com and hit enter again?

Can anyone plz tell me how to do this with Windows?
I have the same problem.I'm on 4.1 and i'm trying to downgrade to 3.1.2,but all i'm getting is "This ipod ipod could not be restored. An unknown error occured.(3194)
Please help !:(:(

Dude, just find Notepad in the Start Menu, right click and select "Run As Administrator", then File -> Open and navigate to "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc and select the hosts file (you may have to change filetype from text files to all files in Notepad). Add your host, and File -> Save.

But this hasn't worked for me :(

EDIT: Just successfully downgraded to 4.0

EDIT2: Sorry, to clarify: I had 4.1 and couldn't downgrade to 3.1.2, but I was able to downgrade to 4.0 and then used Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak.

*****I did not have to install in TinyUmbrella*****
*****Step 2 for hosts file, right click >> Properties >> Uncheck Read-Only

If you are sure that your shsh is on cydia then you need as follow:
A) Download iphone 3.1.3 firmware (http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/)
Make sure you have itunes 9.0.1 (http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=49)
C) Download Tinyumbrella (http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/)
D)Then edit your etc/hosts on your PC (windows)

1) Start -> Run -> C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
2) Right click "hosts" and click "Open" when the Open With box appears, select Notepad
3) Comment out 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com if it exists by putting a # in front so it looks like:
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
4) Add this to a new line at the bottom: 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
5) Save the file (do not change the file name)
6) Put your iphone on DFU mode and connect it to your computer
7) Press shift then click on restore
8) Select the firmware that you have downloaded
9) Sit back, relax let itunes does it job.

Just in case if your iphone get stuck on recovery loop screen during or after restore
10) Open tinyumbrella and click on "Kick Device Out of Recovery"
11) Sit back, relax let iTunes continue its job
