Maybe a bit premature. But speculation is always fun.

What do you all predict the base model of iPod touch 5 will be?

We can probably safely predict that it will include all the features of the iPod touch 4's upper models.

Could the version 5 base model possibly be a 32GB for $199? This is also assuming that next year, the 128GB model finally becomes a reality, which I'm sure they will do at SOME point. Then the reality of 32/64/128 could finally be. Or do you think no matter what, they'll always cripple the base model in regards to storage, and just keep it at 16GB, even if a 128GB model exists at the top end?

I really want (and want) a base model at $199. Hopefully, they'll at least hold that price point around.

In the iPod event last year, they really stressed how "magical" that $199 price point was, so hopefully they'll keep to it. It really is though. For a LOT of people $299 looks way way different than $199, even though one can argue "it's only a hundred bucks".

If they throw in Facetime this year, I'd love to get two new touches for my wife and I, but I'm not going to drop $299 on her iPod when she really doesn't have any need for that amount of storage. So I'm hoping when the 5th gen rolls out, we'll have our Facetime, but in a base model. 16GB would be acceptable, but 32GB for $199 would obviously be very welcomed. I would think a 32GB base would be a natural progression, but I think it depends on memory prices at the time.

We're the same way. I realize it's really $200, and not that far off from the next step up, but it seems less expensive. And, like you, we're going to buy 2 at the same time and upgrade what both of what we have (a 2 gig and an 8 gig Nano, respectively). So, for my wife and I, that would be a welcome jump up.

I'll be happy with a 16 gig being the base model, but if it's 32 at $199, I'll be ecstatic.

That's a really good point. For someone buying one for themself, sure, the extra 100 bucks might not make or break anyone. But if it's you and a spouse, and maybe even a couple more for the kids, now you're talking and extra $400, so it adds up.

Has anyone else given any though to what the 2011 iPod touch lineup will look like?

It will be a small update:
32GB base model, 64GB, 128GB
Front and back camera
512MB ram
Faster processor
One more thing...

Someone needs to design a hat with solar cells so you could recharge while you walk. It would also protect you from sunburn and skin cancer.

The black area on top where the iPhone earpiece would be is a perfect spot to stick a solar cell in. Apple could market a "zero usage / zero gain" while playing music or doing light tasks.

The ipod touch 5 base model wouldn't have this, but I'm sure the upper levels would include the Large Hadron Collider. :D

Personally, I think that IF this years model doesn't have a camera, it is a guarantee that next years will.

That's what they said last year. lol.

But I agree with ya.

Part of me feels like they'll throw in the front facing cam this time, but not a rear. Then next year, we get the whole shebang.

12 MP camera is not likely, the iPhone 5 is told to only have a 10.2 MP camera. iPod touches are less in features like that. They say its only supposed to be a 5 MP camera, like the iPhone 4 has now

Let's both hope!

4.5 inch display? That's too large and with retina display, the resolution is become much higher. I think it would be impossible.
