I would really love it everyone at apple would stop being a lil b**** and just make the dang battery life longer. Seriously, how hard can that be? Also adding a SD card slot wouln't be a bad idea, although i doubt that apple will EVER do that. a 3g plan on ipod touch would be awesome too!! :D

- Dual core 1.2 Mhz processor
- Microphone
- 5MP camera back and front
- AM/FM/HD Radio - FM would be great to tune in to TVs in my gym
- 1080p recording
- Larger screen (4.0 to 4.3, ala Droid X)
- Better screen resolution (Retina+)
- GPS
- 64 GB for price of today's 32.. ($299)
- thicker (ala iphone 4) but with MUCH better battery life.
- IOS 5 with ability to sync podcasts wirelessly and automatically (I hate having to use itunes/PC every time I want fresh podcasts)
- HDMI out with ability to play and stream MKV/divx/VOB/etc files
- Better notifications design...
- Some sort of FF/RR/Play/Pause remote control on the headphones..

Here's something realistic (hardware wise):

- 2MP back camera
- 1MP front camera
- 16GB, 32GB and 128GB models (priced at $199, $299 and $399, respectively)
- FM/AM/HD radio (RFID chip)
- longer battery life
- faster processor
- improved display (IPS)?
- same design (as I doubt the Touch will get any thicker/ slimmer)

Edit: more RAM (oops!)

For software, we'll obviously see iOS 5, which will debt a few months before the fifth-gen iPod Touch is announced. Just my $0.02 on the matter. ;)

popping post cherry.

I'm guessing it will have those front camera flicker detection gesture things that Apple patented last year (or it may have been the year before).

Dual core seems highly plausible, since other devices are getting it. I also heard that a new apple chip (A5) which could introduce itself this year will step up products to dual core status.

I really am hoping on the 1080p.

The 5th gen Touch will be thicker, as thick will be the new thin. It'll give them room to put optical zoom with the cameras. It will force manufactures and you to invest in new cases/accessories too, as always.

GPS is the only tech left to add, except for maybe Near Field Communications. Maybe FM radio with pause too.

The 6th gen Touch will be where they start subtracting features, like they have done with the Nano. ;)

Squarer form
5mp rear camera
2mp front camera
LED Flash
dual core processor
512Mb RAM (1GB in iPhone 5)
IPS display?
No 3G (Why would they give you this? they make you pay another $300 for the iPhone)
GPS would be good.

Really not sure what else to expect

probably the current gens 32GB model as the base for $199
then go onto a 64GB model at $289 and a 128GB model for $339

Maybe see a slightly bigger screen, or a slightly thinner screen with the digitizer and glass stuck together.

Maybe a glass front and back like the iPhone,

White models?? anybody??

Both of you should take a look at post #30. ;)

Woah. 128GB models? Probably not.
IPS? No. Apple is cheap.

I noticed some activity here today. It seems too early to make predictions, we need to see what is in the iPhone5 first. I wanted GPS in the last version and did not buy it when that was not included.
I still say it needs GPS before I buy it.
There has been some talk about a liquid metal back - sounds cool but we have to wait and see there.
I still believe a larger Touch is the future. 5 or 6 inches. That would take care of the speculation on a 7 inch iPad.
That's all it needs.
PS- oh and it will have the NFC that has been talked about. You won't need that if you have a newer iPhone but it will be handy for those who do not have iPhones for whatever reason.

More Realistic Expectations Than Post #30:
  • 16, 32, 64 at 229, 299, and 399 respectively
  • IPS screen and NFC
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 3.2 MP camera +VGA front facing
  • better battery life
  • dual-core processor (it's coming soon)
Things That MIGHT make it:
  • larger screen (less than 4 in)
  • 5 MP camera and higher quality front facing
  • camera flash
Things That WON'T MAKE IT:
  • 128 GB option
  • 4+ in screen
  • ANY thicker
  • 3G or GPS
  • SD/USB/whatever other periphrial (spelling?) you can think of other than dock connector
  • FLASH (just let it die already people. its not gonna happen)
Not only that, but I think it will possibly be thinner. (The people in Cupertino seem to love the whole anorexic iDevice thing, even at the expense of battery life/features.) Plus the one more thing from the iPhone we never knew that we needed.

i'll settle

I'll settle for a sexy blonde that owns a liquor store thats my ultimate model

Why not 128 GB?
It's just too expensive, especially with huge supply constraints due to a higher demand for flash memory than is being produced. The manufacturers are struggling to keep up right now, so they raise the prices. Prices are expected to rise this year. Plus, there just isn't a high demand for a 128GB iPod touch unless you're thinking that everyone is on MacRumors is a cross-section of the rest of the consumer market. They aren't, because they are your power-users compared to the average consumer, who has more than enough space with a 16 or 32GB device. I would like to see a 16GB base model 5th-generation iPod touch though (at least) because 8GB for $229 or even $199 is kind of a rip off. Oh well. It's the best personal music player out there as it is right now, so I can't wait to see what they will do next year with it. :D

This: http://www.9to5mac.com/51428/screw-ipad-2-lets-start-talking-about-ipad-3

sounds like there may be something brewing for the Fall and it may be iPad or maybe iPod Touch related. That would fit my own projections/desires for a complete rebuild of the Touch with a bigger screen.

Or maybe it will be the new iPods alongside the iPad 3. I would like to see an only slightly larger iPod touch though, like maybe 4 inches at most. I'm not really asking for much. A modest update next September would be okay with me, but I really hope it's over the top. I'll get the 32 GB or 64 GB on the next time around because I realized that when I got a 32GB fourth-generation, it hit the sweet spot for my memory needs.

lol i think dualcore processor and better camera will be my needs

Hopefully those are coming, especially the dual-core processor, because I already do so much with mine that it sometimes just doesn't have enough speed for my needs. Better cameras are a must, and hopefully a thinner form factor with a larger screen.

engadget reported on a new method or producing thinner cameras but with the same image quality, maybe we will see something like that. thinner iPod, maybe 4 inch scree (don't count on it though) and dual core processor, 512Mb ram is almost guaranteed, unless the iPhone gets 2GB

Though the iPhone nano rumors are heating up again, which could mean more form factors for the iPhone and iPod touch. I hope there ends up being a larger form factor because the current one is a bit small. That would be really cool to get 1GB of RAM on the iPod touch, and 2GB on the iPhone, but I'm not really expecting it. I hope they are better cameras though, because the quality right now is kind of lacking. The dual-core processor is almost a given.

I certainly hope the rumors are true, then again, you have had that many iPhone nano ones over the last 3 years, I dont know what to believe, if anything, any more.

do not agree.

Apple signed up for having 75% of Samsung's flash. And 720p or 1080p recording will eat up space extremely quickly.. And memory always getting cheaper (especially with die shrink to 28nm/32nm.)
