Just days after being discontinued, the last iPod, the seventh-generation iPod touch, has officially sold out in Apple's US online store.

Yesterday, we reported that some configurations of the iPod touch were being marked as "sold out" in Apple's US store. Now, all iPod touch models in all configurations are entirely sold out.

Apple marked the end of an era this week when it announced it would be ending the iconic iPod brand and product lineup. The iPod served as Apple's foundation and made it a household name years before the iPhone.

"We've integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV," said Apple's Greg Joswiak on Tuesday, announcing the iPod's discontinuation.

Substituting the iPod, Apple says the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the latest iPhone SE, paired with the second-generation AirPods or the $550 AirPods Max, offer the best Apple Music and audio experience.

An iPad micro with 4G/5G in the size of the iPhone SE would be a perfect iPod replacement, for use in the car connected to the on-board entertainment system.
Go much smaller than the mini and you start running into problems with scaling iPad versions of apps. Either everything scales down to be unusably tiny, or UI elements stay the same size and cramp out space for content etc.

Apple finally figured out how to sell all their inventory, they need to announce that they’re completely discontinuing everything and people will buy it all out. :p

So either people felt sentimental about the last product with the iPod name and bought the last ones, or people think they can make a quick buck marking them up on eBay.

Not so much a quick buck, but holding for a few years. Literally any sealed discontinued iPod sells for well over original price. This being the final model should be no different.

Unsurprising. People who want to get the last of the new ones from Apple would flock to this. And they did. And collectors will probably buy them for their, well, collector value years from now.

I was tempted. My first iPod was the iPod Touch. But honestly, I kinda wish Apple would make a cheap(ish) old school iPod with the wheel to scroll through songs. All I want now is a music player. Something I can carry with me that's light and easily pocketable that just has my tunes on it.

Oh well. Thanks for the memories, iPod.

Do you really need an iPod if mine has an iPhone? ;)
The iPod touch was far smaller than any recent iPhone. It's a little like saying "why drive a car when you can drive a bus around?" Yes, it works, but it may be a terrible fit for your use case. If that use case isn't yours, you probably weren't the target market for the iPod touch. I've got a relative who has several (in addition to an iPhone) and likes them very much, who will be disappointed to hear that replacements are no longer easily available.

I think you'll find something called the Apple ][ served as Apple's foundation, and something called a Mac in 1984 was a household name decades before the iPhone.
True as far as being a foundation, though the Apple ][ was never really a household name. Few were familiar with the notion of having a computer at home, in 1977. By the Mac, in 1984, I'd venture a guess that it got at least its 15 minutes of fame as a household name - big splash when it came out, though not something that actually made it into very many homes (as a percentage of total homes, at least).

If someone bought to hold on to as if it will be a collectible they will be in for a shock.

The Lithium battery will self discharge over time and over the years potentially leak etc and become useless.

All you will end up is with a useless brick. Buy some shares of SPY if you want something that over time provides appreciation and also provides cash flow via dividends.

You can just buy one of the cheaper iPhones and use it as an iPod without needing cell service.

I was really hoping we’d see an iPod Glass. A single pain of smoked glass iPod classic with a digital scroll wheel but with lightning or WiFi and Bluetooth.

Apple should revive the iPod Nano (6th gen) — the small square one.

Not everybody needs or wants full connectivity or a device that can do everything under the sun when they just want to listen to some music.

This will never happen of course, because it goes against high margin products only, the fully online culture, and pathological and pervasive data collection.

As I have said/commented before, the battery life should have been better have they used the iPhone 5/5s/SE 2016 form factor... Others may have bought it as collector's item but more often than not, others bought it to drive price increase and have them posted on sites like ebay once no longer available through Apple Store or Apple reseller...

Putting a downclocked A10 and keeping virtually everything the same from iPod touch 6 was the worst decision when iPod touch 7 was released... They should have used the iPhone 5/5s/SE 2016 body and released it back in 2019 or released it in 2022 and say it will be the final product in the iPod line ever...

They will probably show up in sites like ebay once current stock has been zeroed out... And since they will be hard to find new and in perfect condition, prices will surely shoot up... If only the international/non-US prices were lower, I may have bought one for myself brand new, specifically the 256GB storage option...

There have been plenty of NIB/sealed iPods of various generations selling for below original retail on sites like eBay.

Mine was quoted of delivery by the 25th, but now will arrive on the 16th. Makes me wonder where they are coming from, but tracking shows China. At least *SOME* plants are working, or they had pre-made a couple of containers of them ahead of the announcement. Who knows... I'm thinking of saving mine for a few years and reselling it.

I imagine Apple had already sold off a lot of inventory by the time they decided to officially announce the discontinuation of the iPod Touch.

Odd that mine was built earlier this week. But these are the last ones. I'm sure they are building any that are engraved and pulled the plug when actual inventory was exhausted.
