Yes, I know, I overstate

I've never had #1 happen to me, and I have several 1.5hr audio files. But clearly this isn't a problem unique to the ipod touch for you, so I don't see how this makes it worse than any other ipod.

#2 I agree its a bit annoying. Nothing a firmware update can't handle. C'mon apple!

#3 Honestly hasn't been to much of a problem for me. Dbl-click->pause has been sufficient for me. Not much more difficult than unlock->pause for my ipod classic.

Really? Worst iPod ever?

This is why I stayed away from the touch, for music, it is far too inconvenient to carry a touchscreen player without play/pause hardware buttons. Also it is quite large, although thin, it takes up quite the amount of space in my pocket. Sony e436f FTW!

Normally I just pull out the headphone jack and put it back in to pause the music.

When I have to play it again, then I really have to look at the iPod.

And yes, I hate the part where they don't scroll long music titles. It's so hard to find out what I'm listening to or just to find the music (esp podcast) I listen to.

maybe its because i went from 3rd gen ipod to the touch, but i have had my ipod touch for over a year, and i have NO qualms about it. the stuff your talking about is so small and insignificant, it is easy enough to live with....

It is an extremely powerful device for its size. But I find web browsing on it to be painful; if I need to do any real work I use my laptop. And as a music player it's awkward, as others have noted; the Classic (at the high end) and the Shuffle (at the low end) have a more natural functionality. On the Touch I use the calculator function more than anything.

I've been happy with the touch overall. I think the browsing the web is good for such a small device, not perfect, but more than good enough(still needs flash support) .

Music is acceptable, as for long song titles etc. maybe I just don't have enough stuff on there but I never have trouble knowing what song it is.

My biggest issue has been the buggy firmwares. 1.3 1G was fine, 1.4 screwed up wifi. Again with 2.1 it screwed up wifi. I it still drops the wifi signal periodically not sure why.

Other than that, I've been very happy with it and the new $29 buds with volume control and mic is great.

go find something that you wont complain about then?

Thank you! I was thinking the same damn thing! lol If you bought something without testing it out, whose fault is that? lol

If you didn't test it out, and then bought, and then kept it beyond the 14 day return policy...whose fault is that? lol

Get over it, there are bigger things in the world that you DIDN'T have a choice in to gripe about, but as in everything if you can't change it, deal with it and move on. If you can change it...fight like hell, kick a$$, and take names.

don't get me wrong, i like the touch, but because of these 3 reasons i mentioned, i get consistently annoyed. reasons #2 and #3 are steps backward from previous iPods. #1 has been an issue i have experienced with other iPods.

the thing that annoys me: these are all easily fixed in software/firmware. i hope they address these issues at some point, maybe i should file a bug report on apple's website.

If #1 is something that all ipods do, why is it ammunition for the touch being the worst ever?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that audio quality is mostly due to the quality of the audio files themselves. The player has little impact on audio quality. Buy a nice pair of headphones (NOT the Apple ones!) and encode your music above 256kbps and say that again.

Audio quality has a lot to do with the quality of the digital to analog converter the device has. Professional recording studios have rack mount D/A converter units costing thousands of dollars. Also signal path from the D/A converter to your headphones or speakers can reduce quality significantly. These concepts are what the iMod is all about: http://www.redwineaudio.com/iMod.html They will only work with 4th and 5th gen ipods that have the high quality Wolfson converter chip. I guess Apple thought they realized that most people can't really hear the difference.

The thread title isn't as much of an Apple fanboy flamebait as it seems - the Touch is likely the worst iPod ever by a very small margin, in terms of the genesis of the iPod as a music device. But it's also as you infer Apple's best handheld entertainment device to date.

I guess you have to choose which you want. I just went and bought all of them bar the Shuffle.

@Chris14, stuff like the Red Wine Mod is borderline bunk. Most of the quality - especially with current iPods - is as you say in the encoding of the files, and also in your ear/headphones.

Can you use the Genius feature to make prefixes?

I don't have the iPod touch but I am considering to buy one. For the problem related to displaying long names such as "abcdef_song1" and "abcdef_song2", can we do the following?

- Use the Genius feature to make a prefix
e.g. "abcdef".

- Then, under the group named "abcdef", rename the songs as
"song1", "song2", etc.

As for the pause/play problem, just get a pair of iPhone headphones with a button. I have Shure SE210s with an iPhone adapter, and it works perfectly. (2g touch). You could also go with the new V-Moda Vibes if you wanted to go down a bit.

Genius doesnt name anything.

I have to agree with the ts, it is probably the least usable of the iPods at least in terms of it being an mp3 player. It's fairly large, no pause/play buttons, is fairly fragile, and has relatively limited space. However all of it's other features easily make up for these shortcomings. If you just want an mp3 player I'd suggest going with something else. I found my nano and shuffle to be much better suited to that task.

I'm surprised a virtual click wheel hasn't shown up on the app store yet. Maybe this is your chance to make one and get rich? :D

I have a click wheel icon that I made ready for when Apple allows apps to control music. I remember back before the iPod touch rumors were that the virtual click wheel would be the next AWESOME thing. As of now, an app like that violates the SDK terms, but people have been thinking about it. :)

Whaaaaaat?

Then you thunk wrong. Whenever magazines or the like do a review of mp3 players, they load them up with the same tunes and use the same reference headphones. The difference lies in the electronics and firmware (EQs etc) and their ability to reproduce sounds. iPods have never fared much above average for sound quality in any credible review I have read and some have been downright rank - try playing the same rips in the first gen iPod mini (awful) and then in the first gen iPod Shuffle (surprisingly good). I had them both. Big difference. The Shuffle had push-pull circuitry and slightly enhanced sound, the mini didn't. And it showed.

Luckily, most mp3 players on the market today have upped their game, but the results are still not uniform.

I completely agree, the user interface for playing music is totally unintuative and over complex, with different screens, to show your current, song, album lists etc. I have an old 2nd gen iPod mini and use that more for playing music as I can easily use that without having to endlessly navigate through different screens, tapping away like an idiot just to do some thing simple scan through a song or pause the thing. The click-wheel is the pinnacle of iPod design, it's a shame it will soon be gone. :(

Shame on Apple for not allowing for a music control that simply mimics their own non-touch iPods. But I don't think I've seen a virtual click wheel on Cydia, either (for the jailbreaking crowd).

It does seem difficult to use while one handed. You could slide your finger to the right on an album cover to go back to the song list, but it seems like with the just released firmware, this doesn't work anymore!?!

Now I have to go to the top to the backward arrow. Any tips?

2) Long song titles do not scroll. They are displayed as "This is a long aud...". Previous iPods would scroll the long title, so I would know what I am listening to, in particular, so that I can tell the difference between "This is a long audio title (part 1)" and "This is a long audio title (part 2)". Scroll the long titles!!

This is particularly annoying for me, especially since it's STILL an issue. Please head over to the link below and sign the petition if this bugs you!
