can't afford the contract? Isn't it just 60 bucks a month?

For base cell phone usage that is simply an outrageous amount to be paying. I spend $15 a month for my cell phone and am seriously thinking about dropping my land line. That amounts to $540 bucks more a year than I now spend on a cell phone. Granted you get a data plan but that should not be more than $15 itself.

Basically the plan is about double what it should be, even more frustrating is that Apple is getting a cut of that plan. It is sort of like buying a house with cash and them being forced to pay the builder an additional fee to live there.

Now to the original poster; I can't tell you what to do but I will state that you give up a lot of functionality when going to the iPod Touch. Mostly in the sense of the hardware available to you. I'm currently in the same position you are with respect to choosing between the two. Frankly I won't make a decision until I can see just what the SDK offers up tomorrow.

Funny thing is I'm with Verizon too. The switch doesn't really bother me at all. It is purely an issue of cost with respect to the contract. As others have noted it adds up quick, over 2 years it is 1080 more bucks than I would have spent purely on cell phone bills.

I do have an option which would be dropping my land line and go 100% cell based. This however means no dial up. Service wise though I can make an argument that you would actually be getting a better deal going this route. AT&T and Apple offer up a lot of features in the connection that most land lines never thought about having.

What it comes down to is that there is no clear and easy answer to your question. Mainly because it is all about you, your needs and expectations. I'm still trying to figure my expectations out. The biggest problem is that I have cases where I can't get WiFi or where I can't get a cell connection. That would make the iPhone more versatile, but still it is hard to judge against the excessive price.

I am suprised at a lot of responses in this thread, because a few months ago it seemed that a lot of people liked their iPod touches and could justify them getting that versus a phone...and now it seems that the phone is a better move.

Now I personally did not know you could "fake an activation" on an iPhone...while this is an intriguing offer you have to pay 200 dollars on top of a 16GB iPod touch to get a 16GB fake iPhone. Which would now have the annoying icons of Phone/SMS there, not to mention the other little subtleties that are only on the phone. I will admit that volume buttons, brushed sides, camera, the dock and AC charger are awesome features/additions, but I was able to justify saving that money when I bought this a month ago until the next big thing comes out and is in full swing (for my sophmore year I may invest in a 3G iPhone if it gets to be the same price and the rate plans drop maybe..or they change them).

Honestly, the iPod touch isn't an iPhone without the Phone, as one said above. There are MANY features "missing" from the iTouch that make it a lighter, more general device for the next-gen music player. The fact that the battery life is really nice compared to an iPhone is definitely a plus (especially if you plan on using the phone AND music often). And, RIGHT NOW, EDGE is really crappy, regardless if you have the internet everywhere.

So I continue to love mine and not "regret" i didn't get a phone, but your situation (internet accessibility, phone usage, plans, money, etc.) is probably far different.

Interesting thread. I'm in the same predicament - iPhone or Touch?

I need a new iPod and 16Gb isn't enough for me, so that rules out the current iPhone. A 32Gb Touch would be fine capacity-wise.

However, I still then have to carry a separate phone, but then I was doing that when I had my old iPod (which has broken), so it's no big deal.

Also, an iPhone doesn't offer MMS, video recording and 3G, all of which I use.

So, I either go for a Touch or hang on for the next iPhone. I'm going to visit an Apple Store this week for a play and try to make up my mind.

Ipod touch.
I thought I would regret not getting the iPhone. But the contract change for my phone, the cost of use per month, the realization I never use a camera phone, and I rarely get any or receive any calls, etc... I made the choice to buy the touch.
And with the apps you can/will be able to get seems like the right choice - for me.:apple:
