Outdated? I'd love to see another mp3 player with the same feature set and great functionality of the touch.

I love technology - so I'm willing to pay a premium for this stuff. In Canada, the iPhone isn't coming any time soon (hasn't been announced yet). I'm currently locked into a telus contract for like 2 years. In that time, who knows what kind of iPhone they'll have! If I end up buying one - I'll have gotten great use out of the touch and have been happy for it. You can't hold out til the next best thing because you'll be waiting forever. It's only important that you're smart about your purchases i.e. someone who decided to get a 5.5 g two days ago didn't make such a great buy.

You can wait forever and ever because something new will always come out! If it doesn't suit your needs now, then don't buy it. If it does, buy it! Simple as that.

I think the day we have 64GB and 128GB iPod flash's, is the day the classic dies. It could well be next year, it was recently I saw a 32GB flash card on engadget, its all about the prices though!

Was this thread a joke?

Nope. I think iPod touch is a Joke.

I could understand having flash in iPhone but no way in an iPod. 16GB max is a joke.I dont need fullscreen to listen to music. Big screen is meant for vids. Apple launched it coz they had no choice. iPhone is already out, the technology is there so everyone expected to get an iPod with touch screen. I`m sure Apple wud luv to launch this iPod touch next year instead with atleast 32 GB. But waiting till next year means one more year of people complaining bout no iPod touch. 16GB is not good enough even for just the music collection of a lot of people. 8GB nano is fine but not 8Gb iPod touch.

And after dropping iPhone to 399 I m completely convinced apple doesnt give much importance to iPod touch(atleast right now). They could have made it a lil fatter with 80GB HDD and $400+ price tag and people wud buy em like crazy. I m sure thats not impossible for apple. But that wud make iPhone look pale in comparison. iPod is huge. Jobs wants iPhone to even surpass iPods success.

So IMO iPod touch is just a showcase product. It`s there only to make their ipod lineup look better. 299 for iPod and 399 for iPhone. I`d definitely go for iphone(if ATT is ok enough for me. Even if it`s not the best network for me)

And BTW I do think Apple is doing the right thing by using Flash instead of HDD. That`s where the future is. Once we have 32/64 GB Flash in the iPod Touch/iPhone it`ll be better than an iPod classic with 160GB for a lot of people(including me).

Yeah, complaining that technology moves on is like complaining that water's wet. That's just the way it is...

Even when something better, faster, shinier appears, that doesn't necessarily make your gizmo 'out of date'. I have a 20gig, 2nd gen iPod. Compared to the new, slimline iPods, it's a bit of a 'brick'. But, hey, it works fine, holds a charge and carries a lot of music.

But I have a LOT of music, and the price of the iPod Classic 160gig is very tempting...

But will it be outdated within 3 months?

See, that's my concern too!
It took 10 weeks for the Iphone prices to drop like a rock.
I am just afraid of a bizarre price drop soon after getting a new one.
Is it wiser to wait a couple of months?

Or should I get a Classic for nearly 1/2 the cost of the Ipod Touch and use it for the next 1 -2 years?
The way it now for me, I have 0 Ipod and was about to buy my first anyway... ( I have a crappy Creative Zen Micro with 4GB at the moment)

Is there any point in even contemplating buying an iPod Touch???

I dont want to purchase on now only to have a 32gb and 64gb come out this time next year?

I cant afford to buy technology that will be outdated in a year! Would it be more efficient maybe waiting for an iPhone update to 16gb or something like that?

Why would you buy anything if you are going to die anyway in the not too far away future? Once you're in that box six feet deep, even a 1000GB iPod won't do you any good.

Personally, I want my entire music library on my iPod, which means 100 gigs minimum.

I'd be ordering a Touch right now if it had that. Apple dropped the ball on this one IMO

There is no way Apple could have released a flash based iPod with 100GBs of storage and been able to price it competitively.

I do not think Apple dropped the ball. I believe this is the best they can do with flash. That said, there are two ways this can go. The iPod Touch can undergo a small update at the end of the year with a price drop or the iPod Touch can undergo a larger update in the spring of 2008 with a price drop to the 16gb. I think with the drop of the 4gb iPhone and the price drop people are weary of being early adopters on this iPod Touch. They should not though. This is the holiday lineup so there is, in my opinion, some guarantee that you will get at least 6 months use out of the iPod Touch before it is updated with increased capacity and a drop in price on the 16gb and the 8gb.

I'm just saying sure, 16gb sucks in a way, but personally even with over 40gb of music I only have about 15 on my 60gb iPod.

I am continually amazed by how many people fail to understand that very simple fact.

Solid/flash based storage is way too expensive right now.
A hard drive based solution is not what Apple is after — looks wins over storage.

Thin is in — it is an aesthetic you see on all their products (bar the Mac Pro) thinner is better for Apple.

We should wait till the touch gets a 32 gig version for 200 dollars cheaper!

Infact, lets wait till genetically modified crops are improved, so that we can grow 500kg of rice from a cup of grains..

Come on... If you want a touch, buy it. =)

I want to get a touch, as my Photo's hard drive died and and I only have a shuffle left. However, for me, I could justify buying the Touch when the capacity gets to 32GB as my sister and I would most likely have to share it. (We both want one and my parents would never have two of them in the house.)

You need an iPod Classic. Apple didn't drop the ball, they made an iPod for you. Sorry that you aren't happy with that.

I've read every post in this thread and the general concensus is that every one is slagging me off

You'll never be able buy another piece of technology in your life!

Was this thread a joke?

You're new around here, aren't you?

So I dont think I got my point through quite right.

I am a 15 year old student at a boarding school in england. Now since Im not at home that much it takes me quite alot of to save any money at all as I dont get pocketmoney/allowance.

Its taken me almost a year to save £200, now I know it happens but after the iPhone price drop and 4gb drop I'm paranoid about wasting my money.

I know technology advances practically monthly, BUT, I have a 3 year old G4 powerbook which still works fine for me, and since then technology hasnt advanced that far.

My 80gb HD is still ample and still quite good for new laptops
The 512mb Ram is a little small but still only half of what you get in a new basic Macbook
The processor is only a PPC 1.5Ghz but it is still fairly nippy in iMovie and Garageband because I treat this thing better than my sister!

Anyway my point is, I dont want to buy on to have it dropped or have it updated significantly. My Laptop is 3 years old and is still pretty good. I dont want a touch that has its hard drive doubled in half a year when that has only just happened for my laptop which is 3 years old!

I also know I'm talking out of the spectrum as this is HD and Flash but I just dont want my money to have gone to waste if I could have spent it on a significantly better product in half a years time.

I suppose Im just a paranoid teenager!

This is the simple fact that most people don't realize. They think Apple are trying to give us 8 and 16gb Hard drives which obviously seem outdated compared to the classic. Maybe if they looked into how much flash memory actually costs they would stop moaning.....

i think the question you have to ask yourself is "are you making a compromise in buying the touch now?". if the storage is sufficient for your needs (and your anticipated needs) then get one. but if you think there just isn't enough storage for you then wait until it is updated to a capacity that suits you. i have a 60GB ipod. i really couldn't care less that the new equivalent ipod has 160GB because 60GB has been and will continue to be sufficient. my ipod may be out of date in that there is a newer better model but it is in no way obsolete because it still suits my needs.

The iPod Touch will not be outdated as long as it meets your needs, personally I synchronise my current iPod every day and just chop and change my play lists for work meaning I would never need more then 8GB of Space so when I get my iPod Touch in October it will meet my needs perfectly, Also with the £85 rebate that is currently available for students (i got iMac 2.4GHz 20", apple care and iPod Touch for £1008 after rebate!) that means an 8GB iPod Touch for only £114 which in my opinion is awesome value for money,

Also you will notice that the more music you have on your iPod the more you will skip songs meaning you will use more battery trying to find something you like/want to listen to,

I would wait because it's the first one and am sure they'll be a lot more improvements in future versions.

But that’s infinitely true, there are always going to be new versions with new features so why let that hold you back? I just bought an iMac but I know that by this year next time it wont have the latest features but it will meet my needs and that’s what’s important when you buy a product, if your always waiting for something newer and better to come along and fear losing money or buying slightly out of date technology then you will always be waiting,

Also a lot of people are forgetting that the iPod Touch is very different from the past iPods because it has a lot more potential for software updates to add new features, i personally could see stuff like iCal making it to the iPod Touch as a software up date rather then introducing a whole new model
