hey does anyone know what the screen is made of on the touch, hoping its glass like the iphone, but fearing plastic scratch magnet like the old days

Has it ever occurred to any of you that Apple doesn't want to satisfy everyone's demands all at once, and would rather releases products in a way that will maximize sales?

Totally agree... these guys are not stupid.... you have to have a pipeline with added features, etc. There is a method to their madness..

just bought my 16gb touch! AGHHHH!!! Cant wait! They said I should have by end of Sept. WOOOOO!!

Losing the hard drive is a necessary sacrifice. This thing is thinner because it doesn't have to have as big of a battery or the bulky hard drive. Hard drive ipods for me have been notoriously unreliable, the moving parts are prone to breakage, whereas this thing should last a while. I would rather have to worry about really packing in the content rather than having to worry about the hard drive dying. Use iSquint to reencode your movies down to 300mb rather than pissing and moaning...that makes the equivalent of 60 gigs of capacity in 16 gigs of capacity, as iTVS movies tend to be around 1.5gb. You don't lose noticeable quality if you have the settings right, just keep cutting the bitrate until you start to see problems. And learn to pick and choose with your music, it's better to have 1500 songs that you like and only that, rather than 1500 songs you like and 8500 songs that are iffy. Come on, what the hell else 8gb media players have a real OSX web browser. And people are going to hack the pants off this thing...what's to stop one from jailbreaking it and then moving iPhone apps back onto it like Mail.app? Or something crazy like that.

I was just reading this article, and the revelation hit me like a bolt... I didn't even realize it. I'd thought the iPod wouldn't have Safari, but with WiFi, it ALL MAKES SENSE!
Mr. Jobs said a key reason other wireless music players haven't done well is that they often are unable to connect to Wi-Fi networks outside the home. Many public "hotspots," as public areas such as hotels and airports with Wi-Fi are called, require users to log in through a Web browser, which most portable music players lack. The iPod touch, on the other hand, has a full-blown Web browser, just like the iPhone.
BAM! This is why none of these other products can really compete without significant extra development. Some of these "login" pages require e-commerce, others simply aren't designed for mobile-sized devices. With the new iPod Touch and iPhone... NO PROBLEM! These are PERFECT digital assistants. Were I filthy rich, I'd get one to station permanently in my kitchen and another in my living room. Simply awesome solution, and I'm expecting a lot more to come.

I'm a little dissappointed about this "component video" tosh though. All my old tvs are quickly becoming crap. It'll make sense in a few years though I'm sure.

As someone with a 45gb music library and a severe case of spendhappiness, I was also disappointed at first with the Touch. Then I looked at the issues that putting a hard drive in such a device might cause - UI lag, increased battery drain, massively decreased durability, and then at the perks that flash offers to the system - nearly instant reaction times, nil load time, extreme durability, skip-proofness, no moving parts. Flash was easily the way to go here.

I then created a playlist in iTunes and dragged all the music that I listen to regularly (that is, music I've listened to in, say, the past few months as opposed to the dusty albums that just sit there to make my collection look larger and more eclectic to the passerby) - I got about to F in my artists list and had less than 1.5gb of music listed. I could easily fit all the music I actively listen to plus a couple of anime series in 16gb. I just won't have my whole collection with me at all times.

(edit: I finished assembling the playlist and it comes out to a comfortable 9.03gb of music. That leaves at least four or five gigs for video. Works for me.)

That's what my old 'n busted 40gb 4G is for. For a device that I'll be carrying around as casual listening/viewing to kill time between/before/after classes, 16gb is as much space as I'm ever likely to need. And with that in mind, the Touch is a pretty fantastic device.

I ordered the 16GB with reservations and may cancel. This is not due to space though as I can live without carrying my entire library with me.

My main concerns are:

1. Notice it doesn't have volume buttons like the iPhone. Want to adjust the volume...you will be burning screen battery time and forced to unlock it at times.

2. Unless it's undocumented there's no bluetooth. I thought for sure it would support stereo headsets at some point in the future. This also stops bt teathering from a phone on another network. I use my Nokia n770 this way.

3. Good news is it has the regular headphone jack opposed to the iphone version BUT does the headphones have the skip track button feature? It doesn't look like it and I skip a lot when in shuffle mode.

4. Finally my least concern. It's not confirmed yet that it will have the glass screen preventing scratches. I think it will since apple took notes on the nano release.

Everyone is crying about storage space. The items above matter much more to me. I may cancel the order tomorrow.

safari and proxies

firstly..the ipod touch is ridiculous..as in amazing..in my opinion. sure the capacity isnt huge but a 2gb nano was more than enough for me.

secondly..i go to university and they have separate proxies set up for the internet. so i have to make a new location on my mac and enter the proxy address and port number so i can connect, eg. proxy.monash.edu.au and the port is 8080. do u think this will be possible with ipod/iphone safari? or is there a way around it. will i be able to connect over wifi? if i can..i wont have to take my cumbersome laptop..woooooh.

and thirdly..will the itunes wifi store have podcasts etc? i hope so. doesnt really matter if not though.

if anyone knows the answers to my questions..would be amazing help :)

It would be nice if Apple decided to focus on upgrading the sound quality as well as the bells and whistles.

One and four would also bug me, I must admit. I don't see why they wouldn't go with glass, though. They originally put it there for scratch resistance and they can probably use the same panes they're knocking out anyway for the iPhones - it would save them money in manufacturing.

edit: From the photos at Engadget it does look like they're using glass.

Your third point is just wrong. I just browsed my 5G iPod and the drive didn't spin up until I started a song playing. The catalog is pre-generated and stored on disc. The first time it's turned on, the disc is spun up and the catalog is stored in battery backed RAM, where it stays until it puts itself into deep sleep. There is nothing about a hard drive that would impact responsiveness of the UI, with the sole exception being when playback begins.

What about Safari? Or the fact that this iPod is running a more complex OS, with more controls, etc.? You don't want to push a button, and then wait for the app to open like on a Mac. I think the UI works much better if it's all seamless and instantaneous.

I don't know for sure, but I think it would be a factor.

Univeral Reader App

Does anyone know whether iPod touch have a universal reader that can read PDF, txt or iWork files?

anyone else hate that matte black plastic around the front edge? and the stupid chrome too?

here's what i wish it looked like:

I Like Your Point

What about Email support? I don't wanna use webmail. They should have included the iphone email client!

Although I guess the iPhone is almost affordable now that the price dropped. If only I could get one to work with t-mobile! Hmm...

I think you touched on a couple of important points... 1) Application support. It would be nice if Apple supported it to a greater extent. I personally believe it will happen in time but alas, I want it NOW. I've been dabbling in Java App development and it would be awesome if Apple opened up to 3rd party devs who could make some great apps to complement Apple's sweet platform... aka Widgets I could sell! 2) I'm holding out on the iPhone until 3G or "better" but the rapid price drops, endemic to the celphone industry is awesome and I'm tempted! :D

But in the meantime, I'm going to keep streaming my movies, games, and music from my PS3 to my PSP, through T-Moble. Interesting how T-Moble uses AT&T's network... looking forward to comparing my personalized 16GB iPod touch (6 years in the waiting) touch to it.

Yeah....the fact that they replaced the white iPod with silver-like aluminium tells me thats not gonna happen. Apple's future is Aluminium and glass and everything will have an iPhone-ish look (Black/Silver) to it henceforth it seems.

Umm... No. I like the black. Don't care much for the aluminum, but only because it scratches so easily, forcing the beautiful device into a case. I pretty much love everything about the looks, though.

I agree you don't want delays, but it can be handled. Full Safari is 6MB, the full WebKit is 20MB. Strip them down to mobile size, add in the AppKit and other components and they still take about the space of a single song. If you can cache your music, you can cache Safari. I suspect they do this in the Flash based units as well-- they're not only going to want to store the application but keep the data memory intact as well.

There's obviously a reason Apple didn't ship a high capacity Touch. My guess is marketing and placement reasons, but it's still disappointing. I said yesterday that touch, flash and wifi would leave me on the fence, and here I sit...

The ironic thing is that everyone was expecting a HD but no Wifi for marketing and placement reasons, instead we got the opposite.

iPhone: 480x320 pixels at 160 dpi

ipod touch: 480x320 pixels at 163 dpi

Hmmm, that's a tiny difference, but it does have significance. It means that the iphone and ipod touch use different parts for the screen and the multi-touch interface. Could that mean that the ipod touch doesn't have glass? (probably not). But it is important in understanding that the ipod touch doesn't just feed off of the same assembly line as the iphone (they may be made by different companies in East Asia.

I was really waiting for a good video device (ok, so the nano has the highest resolution on an Apple product ever, it's still not for anyone wanting real video quality), and while waiting researched the archos 605 (certainly the runner-up in sub-$500+ devices) which has an 800-480 screen that is 4.3 inches.

While the iphone (and now ipod touch) does hold its own against the archos, couldn't Apple have made the entire flat side of the ipod touch a screen for a widescreen aspect and maybe kicked up the resolution a bit (ok, that one may have been a push).

iPhone owners: how IS 480x320 for watching videos?
Everyone: thoughts on resolution size?

I am really digging the touch after my full 40 gig photo crashed. I am foreever done with portable HD's. I've had to get use to my 2 gig nano the last 9 months. I've learned to organize my music alot better. I have a job where I can listen to my ipod all day, In a give and take, I'll take battery life over storage thank you very much. Sounds like alot of people just don't know how to organize there music and playlists very well. The smart playlists are fantastics.

Since so many are daydreaming of 80gig touch ipods with 20 hour battery life for $400, I'll add my 2 cents how about a nintend DS+IPOD touch mashup.

Smart Move!

This really was a good move for Apple, and especially in the international markets where people can't get the iPhone. Also, after reading through a few pages, people still were only complaining that 16GB isn't enough. I'll agree, it's going to be a sqeeze, but I think it's plenty for most people. People also didn't seem to be mentioning that you can use Safari on this device. When I travel, I need to be able to surf the net, but Idon't want to use my laptop all the time. This can be used anywhere, just like the iPhone.

EDIT: Ooops, in the later pages people started talking about Safari...

Anyways, that just my opinion.

And now back to your regularly scheduled argument:
