He didn't even mention Verizon, just not At&T. there are other carriers besides AT&T and verizon... (but yes I do think a Verizon iPhone would be optimal, just saying...)

Well I will mention verizon.
I know I'll be the first one in line for a verizon iPhone. Having a touch has made me and at least 3 other people I know want an iPhone even more. If apple wants to boost iPhone sales I can think of no better way.

How many iPod Touch's have been sold by Apple? That's very clever I did not even think of it that way.

Six months ago the numbers were 20 million iPhones to 17 million touch's. Almost even.

Right, but many of them dont realize that if and IF the iPhone goes to Verizon, they will suffer the same network problems that AT&T does. Thats not an opinion, mind you, thats a fact.

No, they wouldn't have the same problems, because they have several major network differences.

No, you are probably in the majority but it is only the vocal minority who we always hear about on the internet.

Or in Consumer Reports .

If this is the case, then what's the hold up on adding a camera with the ability to take still photos, Apple?

Strategy, most likely. The iPod touch will be a hit this Christmas, and by giving it only a minor update they can get the price down with high profit margins in time for the holidays. (which Apple probably hopes will translate to App Store sales... and according to this article, iPhone sales down the road)

According to the report, he point isn't to get tweens and teens to buy iPhones, it's to get people who are too young for cell phones hooked on the OS so they want an iPhone when they do get a cell phone.

As for bbm, I don't follow that age group's trends well enough to know if you're right, but I find it hard to believe bbm will make the difference in the long run. I know how that kind of teenage herd mentality is, but ultimately, there are much better devices for people that age, and I can't see bbm being enough when there are IM clients all over the place.
Right, my point was that these young'uns may love their Touches, but when it comes time to buy a cell, it won't be iPhones that they're running to.

I hear what you're saying, but if they've lived with the iPhone os, going to the bb os will be torture. and although you may be right about bbm, I'm saying that's not enough to make up for all the things you're missing out on by not going iPhone, especially when the iPhone has such great IM ability. I mean bbm is nice and all (well not really, but I know some people like it), but compare that to games, multimedia, safari, etc. Kids like that stuff too.

It could even be a school by school thing. I can see bbm reaching a critical mass in some places, but it really has to get to that level for people to care.

I got the touch because I do not use the phone a lot. I hope it gets an iphone camera so I can upgrade.

I'd buy an iPod Touch but not an iPhone. I just don't want AT&T period. I'd prefer a different form factor too. A flip iPhone would be nice and they'd be no need for a case. Two screen or maybe a 3rd on the outside. Anyway the iPhone look is getting old to me.

If Apple leaves AT&T in 2010, I'll buy an iPhone with the next revision.

If Apple doesn't, I'll buy the next iPod Touch.

I wonder if there are any other people out there like me whose sole reason for not already having an iPhone is how bad AT&T's service is.

That's cool... Apple still gets your money.

People keep kidding themselves that it will some how be better. Some parts of the US it will and other parts of the US it will not be. I have used them all and they all have their issues and the dead zones.

Exactly. Verizon's network would have been destroyed if the iPhone were first introduced there. But we all knew that was an impossibility since Apple looks at GLOBAL sales. So Verizon fans, please be happy with your Android offerings.. they're decent. You'll live without the iPhone.

Makes a lot of sense.

It was also pretty obvious that they intend to one day completely phase out the "Classic" iPod, but not until SSD's prices/sizes becomes comparable to HDD's.

My 5th grade students and I are piloting an iPod Touch program in our classroom. We are trying to find out if using iPod Touches can positively impact learning, save class time and get the kids interested in learning more things. We'll see how it goes - we just got them a few weeks ago. One thing is for sure, they are very excited to get to start taking them home! We may have 21 more future iPhone users!

Me!

If Verizon doesn't get the iPhone, hello Droid and iPod touch.

I love my iPod Touch, but I will never become an iPhone user until someone other than AT&T can be used as an official carrier. Simple as that.

That sounded like a pompous statement to me.

Don't forget Verizon is the largest network in the largest market for the iPhone, and would have a HUGE impact on those global sales you talk about.

And if Verizon doesn't get the iPhone, then I WILL be happy with my Droid offerings. (I'm guessing newer Droids will be out by June)

The anti-Verizon sentiment by some on here his laughable. It only HELPS Apple if Verizon gets the iPhone, people! I KNOW there's a HUGE market for a Verizon iPhone. Everyone I know on Verizon, including me, wants one, but won't leave for at&t because their coverage sucks.

And yes, it truly does suck in my area (Greater Cleveland). I was the DD this past weekend and as we were driving my friend had 2 calls drop, no joke.

My 15yo son informs me that just about everyone in his school has an iPod touch. Its just a small leap to a phone (and a contract) from there.

I suppose that if this is Apple's plan, the iPod touch will always remain slightly crippled in some way compared to the iPhone.

Only a few thousand. Most people who wanted an iPhone switched networks for it.
i have a few classmates who couldn't wait for apple to ditch at&t and just bought a droid instead.

not saying the droid is better than the iPhone - but if word spreads that the droid is "just as good", it'll only build more momentum and take away iPhone sales.

if you don't believe me, just remember how the iPod was getting hit by cheaper alternatives, so apple created the shuffle.

They got me.

My iPod touch converted me to an iPhone user last year.

My iPod Touch will not connect wireless to my All (for a change) Apple/Mac system when I use MPA2 protection. When I use my old 802.11b US Robotics router or I am out & connect to an unprotected wireless system all goes well. Also when I used the iPod Touch with my wife's Mac & then back to my Intel Mac with a different start-up partition I lost all of my paid for programs, about half a dozen free apps & any file made by these apps.

So until these problems are resolved my iPod Touch will keep me from purchasing an iPhone. That & the fact that I use Verizon Wireless for cell phone connection to the greatest share of my customers, friends & relatives & not AT&T.

The address book & iCal syncs very well with a wired connection to our Macs. I just hate to connect my unprotected 802.11b system up just to sync my spreadsheets. These 3 reasons I have for using my iPod Touch. The wireless only spreadsheet sync is just a little lacking without compromising the security on my system as my spreadsheets will have a lot of personal data like names, addresses & social security numbers.

So I won't be one of those that will go on to use the iPhone in its current too small of a size for spreadsheet use or the other problems I've mentioned.

I'm not sure I buy the argument. I own an iPod Touch and a separate cell phone. Why? I don't talk a lot on the phone and so I have a pre-pay cell phone that costs me $100 a year to operate and rolls over my unused minutes on top of that. Moving to an iPhone would mean shelling out--what is it-- $80 a MONTH now minimum? Over a mere 2-year agreement that would come out to $1920. That's a brand new MBP every two years folks. Yes, it's nice to use the Internet in my pocket anywhere within cell phone reach, but not brand new 15" MBP nice.

I support the idea of nationwide WiFi coming out of our taxes. Of course, private industry HATES that idea since it would mean less chance to gouge us for WiFi at every two-bit location. But a single-payer style WiFi might cost every person $5 a month or so to use any WiFi device in any city or town in the country. It would also mean homes could get something faster than dial-up in most areas without paying any extra a month. Regardless, I've got better things to do with $80 a month than give it to AT&T. So here's one iPod Touch users that plans to STAY an iPod Touch user.

Why does every single thread about the iPhone have to come back to "iPhone on Verizon?"

Gee, I don't see the word "Verizon" once on gmcalpin's post.

Fail reply is fail.

I'd say what keeps me from getting an iPhone (besides it only being available on AT&T) is the mandatory data plans. I don't particularly care about having 3G data access. The iPhone for me is an iPod touch plus a cell phone (for voice calling) rolled into one (and a so-so digital camera thrown in). I don't mind only having data access when there's Wi-Fi around, and Wi-Fi is available all over. I'm sure the carriers know this too so that's why they force you to get the data plan.

I pay $30/mo for my not-on-contract and not-prepaid cell phone service, and what I get in minutes and messaging is just fine for my needs. Why would I want to pay twice to three times as much for two years at least.

i know where your coming from, i considered unlocking my first gen (out of contract) iPhone to a goPhone plan because of the mandatory data plan. then i realized how much i rely on Google maps, push notification and just needing data the times i can't get on a store's wifi. this is probably utilized more so for 3G users.
