sees its strong performance among young consumers as building a base that will naturally migrate to the iPhone as they mature.

Hmm, not just young users. At the age of 50 I went into the Apple Store in Bristol, saw the iPod Touch, spent two hours walking around town thinking "shoud I? shouldn't I?" then went back and bought it. A couple of weeks later I was regretting renewing my contract with Vodaphone and wishing I'd gone to O2 and got an iPhone. At least VF are getting iPhones early next year so I don't have to wait until Sept. :D

Anyone wanna buy an 8GB Touch 2G ;)

Well once AT&T's exclusivity is up, I don't think Apple will sign another exclusivity with another carrier. Which means if there will be a CDMA capable iPhone, Sprint could very well get it at the same time, if not soon after the big red does. We might even see it on TMO. I'm sure Apple wants its baby to be as ubiquitous as Blackberries...available on pretty much every network.

My understanding is that a putative Verizon iPhone would use some ubiquitous 4G network that Verizon (and others) are supposed to be rolling out, not CDMA.

That's funny, because I plan on selling off my iPhones to go with a Touch, since:

1. Like most people, I don't actually NEED a cell phone.
2. Unlike most people, I barely even need a telephone.
3. Unlike most people, I like being unavailable and uninterruptible sometimes. When I'm out & about, I'm busy.

What can I say, I'm an in-person kind of guy. I like the iphone, but for me it's a PDA with a little phone app piggybacked on. An ipod touch with a mic and voip should do the trick for a lot less than $100 a month.

SandynJosh... from lake mills?

Funnily enough I was going to mention this as well, I can see what the article is saying but personally until the battery life of these devices gets better I would still like to keep my Phone and my PDA/Movie Player/MP3 player seperate so I dont end up stranded without a phone after watching a few films!

In the UK we are starting to get a few interesting options, one being the "MiFi" (or a protable wireless router that works on 3g) which I think is out in the US and sounds more or less what you are looking for!

a large chunk of these people buying ipod touches might even have bought an iphone if you didn't have to be an AT&T customer to get an iphone. I will never buy an AT&T phone, for example.

I’m going to go along with this. I got a 1st gen iPod Touch as soon as they had come out… it was a good trade off from the Original iPhone as the cost involved was much greater… and i was still tied up with a T-Mobile contract at the time :p

But after using the iPod for a few months my contract ended and i switched to O2 and my 3G… and now i see a lot of kids with the iPod Touches… either way Apple is raking money in so they’re happy!

I would consider the iTouch a gateway drug. :)

I bought my first iTouch a year ago and have been pining away for a Verizon iPhone ever since. ATT internet coverage in my area is spotty at best.

Anyway, I bought my first Mac this year, also, after my experiences with the iTouch.

Hmmm, I must be in the minority then. I have an iPod Touch and love it. I use it for listening to music, watching vids and playing games and apps. Even some light browsing. But I really have no intention of getting an iPhone.

I really prefer to have my media content and my phone in 2 separate devices. Maybe that's just me. I have an Android phone on contract and love it as a phone and communications device.

As I said I absolutely love my iPod Touch but I'd never want to get an iPhone, and all those suggesting it's a gateway to the iPhone or a kids starting block I think are wrong as I can't be the only one in this boat.

I totally believe this. I freaking love my iTouch and would kill to have it as a phone on a network that functions in my area.

The only thing my touch has done is make me want to get a touchscreen phone when it's time to renew my phone/contract.

A lot of people on here talk about reception/dropped bars with AT&T, but I never see any discussion about price. To get all the features for an iphone isn't it horribly expensive, like near $100 a month? I prefer Sprint because they're the cheapest and yet have great reception where I live. On top of that, if I'm roaming I can use the highly touted Verizon network, so I receive all the benefits and pay less. I think people are too quick to pick a side before looking into all their options.

i totally agree to this... getting my ipod touch lead me to get an imac, and then now i am in the process of buying an iPhone... good hidden marketting there mr jobbs
