Just to clarify, do you use the passphrase or key when trying to connect to a locked network? And I just checked, all my DHCP options are "enabled"

Sounds like the router has MAC address filtering turned on. Your iPod touch won't work on this network until its MAC address is added to the list.

If your device isn't on the MAC list, the router will let you on the network and may even give you an IP address, but won't pass any data to/from the network.

Also, the amount of money that you'd save could be as low as $180 ($15/mo x 12). You may also want to wait a month to see if Verizon gets the iPhone.

Instead of paying $60+/month for the iPhone, I would get an iTouch, and join my sisters family plan on Verizon for around $70/month for both of us and get a simpler phone.

Plus you're saving $360 a year in data charges. That's important to remember.

$60/month - $35/month = $25/month savings.. so $300 per year, not $360 or am I math challenged today?

Sorry, you're right, I forgot that the unlimited was switched to the 2gb/month plan, and that the price dropped from $30 to $25. So yes, $300 per year, not $360. My mistake.

So just calculate how much you save going iPod Touch + Verizon route vs the iPhone and see if the difference is worth it.

Looks like you're looking at $35/mo (plus texting charges, if any) on Verizon, or $50 (calling plan, 550 mins) + $25 (2Gb data plan) + $20 (text plan, 200 msgs) = $95 (plus taxes and fees, so more like $110) per month for the iPhone, at a minimum. If you bump your calling plan (e.g. $60 for 700 mins) or get unlimited texting ($30) it just goes up from there. The bottom line is that if your monthly cost is a consideration, the iPhone is expensive. These prices are all from memory so there might be mistakes, but this is the pricing structure for the iphone on AT&T (calling plan + data plan + text plan + taxes/fees) and the numbers are in the ballpark.

Is there speculation that Verizon will pick up the iPhone, or is this just you're thought?

Does anyone know anything about the Motorola Devour? Its an Android Verizon smartphone for only $70.

Don't you read this forum? ;) There's been speculation about the Verizon iPhone ever since they announced the original iPhone on AT&T. The latest rumors indicate that a Verizon iPhone announcement will happen about Jan 20.

Here's my take on low cost smartphones. Don't buy a smartphone based on price alone. Look at it this way. A smartphone is gonna cost you about $25/mo for the data plan. That's $600 for a 2-yr contract. What's the difference between $670 vs. $800 over two years.

Get the phone that works best for what you need. That said, the Moto Devour may suit your needs. Besides, I'm a shareholder of Moto, so you'd be doing me a favor. ;)

keep in mind Verizon's selection of phones that do not require a data package is AWFUL. i learned this yesterday as my dad told me i have an upgrade in Feb. but i can't get a phone that requires any sort of data...so it seems as though i have a choice of 23 phones that are all downgrades from my current LG enV Touch, which is absolutely ridiculous.

If I were to go with a dumbphone and an itouch, what are some good Verizon phones you guys would recommend?

After using an iPhone, the iPod Touch feels a bit lacking.

So just calculate how much you save going iPod Touch + Verizon route vs the iPhone and see if the difference is worth it.

This. We've already found the difference in cost is $300 per year. So is a better camera (higher MP plus Flash), double RAM, better screen (oleophobic and IPS), GPS, a compass, and an All-in-one device worth $300? Only you can answer that based on your unique needs and financial situation, but I would venture to say it is.

I use both, mainly because I like to keep all my entertainment stuff on my touch.

Ok, thanks for all of your guys input and suggestions, I really appreciate it. Now I have to decide. So one last question, if I were to go with a dumbphone and an itouch, what are some good Verizon phones you guys would recommend? I've heard about the LG enV Touch, LG Dare, and Cosmos, but not much more. (my sister has the Cosmos) Is what's listed on Verizons site as their "featured phones" everything thats available?

i have the enV Touch, i do not recommend it in any way shape or form. i've only had problems with it. my brother has the Dare, i don't think he would recommend that either. Verizon requires you to have a $9.99 data package on some regular "3G feature phones" nowadays including the enV Touch, so i'd check what phones don't require any sort of data and what ones do.

Okay so I went to the Verizon store yesterday and have now decided the iPhone is completely out. Either way I will be joining my sisters plan. So now the decision is 1. a dumbphone + iTouch, or 2. Verizon smartphone (Droid). So what is your guys experience with the Droid? I have 2 friends who have it and love it. Also what's the difference between the Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global? (I will probably be getting one of these, sold for $200 after rebate at Verizon)

Droid 2 Global is basically ready to be used in a huge list of countries, while the regular Droid 2 i believe is just supposed to be used in regular VZW locations.

several of my friends have Droids as well and they love them, i say go for the Droid:D

Great, thanks. The first Droid is selling for $50 pre-owned, do you think the Droid 2 is worth the extra $150?

You will likely get a data plan anyway on whatever other phone you decide to get on another network. So the theoretical $300+ you think you'll save by not having an iPhone gets added to whatever other phone you buy. Again, that is if you decide to get a data plan on it. Which I think you're likely to do.

Spend a little extra and get a Droid X or Droid Incredible. They're the best Verizon Android phones and perform similarly to the iPhone 4. You may even feel there's no need to get an iPod after you play with it for a couple days.

The first Droid is pretty weak, comparable to an iPhone 3GS.

If I get a smartphone I will not be getting an iPod. Like I said either a dumbphone AND itouch, or just smartphone. Also I kind of like the slide-out-keyboard, thats why I was looking at the original and 2

You're slick...

Not so fast.

$300 is 1 yr's worth of data. Its a 2 year contract.

so. $200 for the iphone + $600 in data over two years + taxes and fees and what not.

You could always get the $15 monthly data plan. Then to keep the cost down, download google voice app and use it for texting.

for those of whom have a Droid, how do you like it for music? Is the sound quality good? Compared to an iPod/iPhone? Easy to use/sync?

Why do you say this? What major benefits does the Droid 2 have over the first?

sorry for the late response but for me i just like having the newer technology over something that's been out for a while because typically that implies there are upgrades in some areas making the new one better/more advanced.

I don't understand why 2 pages long still no one mentioned a major advantage Touch4 has over the iPhone4? the iPhone is 50% heavier than the Touch, and much bulkier! I forget the Touch with me most of the time. That's enough reason to own a Touch for multimedia. All-in-one is nice, but the problem is that dedicated devises will do each task better.

Also if you have a dumb phone and Touch, you don't need to worry about when you played too much game to a point the remaining battery is not enough to complete an important phone call. You can only play less than 2 hours of 3d games, after that your iPhone is a dead brick anyway.

I bought a new touch to replace my nano. Also I like it's similarity to my iPhone 4. I use the touch for the massive amount of music, videos and pictures I have. It my entertainment device whereas the iPhone is for all else.

i'd be afraid that i'd have to do something similar with a possible 32GB ViPhone and new 64GB Touch or 160GB Classic, even though i don't need it all the time i like having all of my iTunes media on hand.
