3rd and 4th gen iPods still running for me! Though, I don’t use them anymore due to Apple Music.

I'm so frickin' mad at modern Apple for killing the iPod. The iPhone is not as good for music enjoyment for me as a non-streamer. Apple (and other streaming companies except Bandcamp) de-values music sound quality, music collection, and musicians. It's a conspiracy I tell you! And if not, it just plain sucks.

My brother has a 30GB iPod from 2004 or so. Apparently still works, though the battery is toast.

Those comments...
Remember the comments about the original iPad that were so negative that even Jobs was disappointed?
And then people literally lined up around blocks to get one.

Impossible to have known it’d grow this huge. Hindsight is 20/20.

When I got the iPhone 2G I got 4GB capacity, and a friend asked if it was enough storage for my music and my response was “I’ll never put more than 100 songs on my phone”.

Boy was I wrong.

iPod was a great product line, I love mine. Too bad they aren't making them anymore, but they'd be for a very niche market now.

"put your entire music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go"

They created a practical tool to do something I wanted to do. That's the way product design is supposed to work: technology providing a solution to a problem, not technology in search of an application.

Ummm. . . . you can get a 256GB iPod touch for $299. Put all of the AIFF files on it that you wish. It even comes with a headphone jack. IMO scrolling through songs with a wheel is not as simple as finding something with a touch keyboard.

Like to watch these old keynotes (I was around but not an Apple user at the time). Steve Jobs was so passionate about every product Apple launched. You can feel it in his voice and body language. Tim Cook - and almost everyone else at Apple's keynotes these days - just look like they're faking every bit of enthusiasm.

My first Apple product was the touchwheel iPod. I believe I still have it tucked away in a box somewhere. It wasn't until 2008 that I picked up my first Mac OS laptop and the rest is history.
The original iPod is still one of my favorite designs.

This was the moment I started building big positions in Apple’s stock for my clients. I’m no genius, I just thought they were on a great path. It’s now our biggest holding, so big some clients get concerned from time to time. It is by far the most fascinating company I have analyzed.

I had one... Great Device... I waited until the Target in my area put it on clearance for $179... I used that thing so much... Then gave it to my sister when I upgraded... I helped her replace the battery a few years back... now my niece and nephews use it with an Aux cable to a portable speaker in the "kids room". That thing has taken a beating and still performs... mostly plugged in, but still!

I still think the wheel was a great idea!

Literally, a revolutionary device! IMHO

The iPod was convenient but hands down sounded like crap. It was the official beginning of the death of HiFi.
Never bought one. Didn't like what I heard.

It was a mass produced consumer product, that had some decent versions, and some bad (for audio quality).

That said, how is that any different than other mass produced consumer audio products? 🤷‍♂️

I still have my 15gb 3rd generation. The OG iPod Touch, since it was the first touch sensitive iPod with no click or physical buttons. still gets used and works great. I always thought the clickwheel was a step backwards from this design in some ways.

Looking at the archives of this site, I sure do miss some of the old days, and chatting with users no longer active here!

I still have mine: 40Gb with all the pouches, stand, chord and and big firewire plug
It was a special gift and there is some written on the back that makes it even more special to me.
The battery last only 5 minutes~ and I'm using it mostly connected to the charger. With iTunes I was able to use it as an external disk too. Now it's only for songs and connected to good speakers, the transparent spatial look (HarmanKardon) the music is still good. Is it possible to change the battery? Where could be possible to find it?

I've bashed a lot of mac products over the years saying that no one would want it....In hindsight the only thing i was right about people hating was itunes and ping.

MacRumors' comments section could learn a lot from history. With very few exceptions, pretty much every negative comment made 5 or more years ago has been completely disproven with time. I'm sure it'll be the same 5 years later.

All of the below have been failures. Apparently.

Apple Watch, iCloud, Beats acquisition, iPad, MacBook Air, the latest MacBook Pro (and the model before that... oh, and also the one before that...)

At least back in the day most of those negative comments came from people used and liked Apple products, who just had differences of opinion. Now there are so many people here that clearly hate and don’t use them... and are here for nefarious reasons. In some ways I miss the days when Apple was just computers and had just 6% market share and no one hated them for no other reason than they hate the big guy.

Sub-niche? ;) Every time a thread gets going about updates in the iPod forum the leading justification/use case is as a non-connected first device to give to kids. Almost no one seems to view it as a standalone MP3 player these days.
