I'll tell you what I said when I first saw the iPod…

Edit: And they did, and they have been ever since…

I wish Apple still sold the iPod Classic. They could market it as a proper premium product with a full steel/ceramic case, 2Tb SSD and make it waterproof. Give it Bluetooth, airplay 2 and collectors would pay a decent premium for it.

I was influenced to buy that iPod by the Jeff Goldblum video where he is bopping out the door to "Take California" by the Propellerheads. He switches the music source from the computer to the pod, dancing the whole time. I still love that tune! Do people still listen to music on their computers much anymore? I remember when ripping CD's was a big part of the MacOS and now ... CDs do not even exist anymore. I ran across my sales receipt for the iPod and cannot believe I bought it so soon after release. I guess it was a time of turmoil and change and ... woops come to think of it I just brought the watch and the brand new phone. Hang onto your hats people, here we go again!!!

The best invention Apple ever made was the white earbuds and marketing the heck out of them including a spot in a 50 cent music video. That was what sold the ipod

Oh MAN am I tempted to DM all the nay sayers from that original thread.
I just think of this every time someone unironically says about a new product "This will be the END of Apple!"
Like, so was removing a disk drive, removing a CD drive, removing a DVD drive, switching to Intel, making all ports USB C, making an iPod Shuffle without a screen, Face ID, hell, even taking the original iPod off Firewire was a "dealbreaker." I'm not saying these were all the right moves or that I agreed with them, but Apple has a very long track record of telling people what they want and having most people end up agreeing with them.

Ahh so just the usual narrow minded short sighted Mac rumour subscriber views then. Nothings changed in almost 20 years lol.
They embarrassingly try and call Apple out on making a ‘terrible product that no one will ever want’ only to fast forward 6 months to headlines of ‘record sales’ of said dissed product. They then argue that it’s because Apple sheep buy anything Apple makes, only to then have earnings reports show global mass take up of said product as opposed to said apple sheep. Ha ha

I bought a 2nd gen iPod brand new in 2002, it was $399, 10GB and glorious. The only difference from the 1st gen was that the wheel didn’t spin anymore, it was basically a trackpad. The FireWire interface was pretty uncommon in the Windows world, but USB was way too slow at the time. Apple hadn’t released iTunes for Windows yet, so it included some awful Windows software that I used before going Mac the following year. Good times!

I still have my 15gb 3rd generation. The OG iPod Touch, since it was the first touch sensitive iPod with no click or physical buttons. still gets used and works great. I always thought the clickwheel was a step backwards from this design in some ways.

Looking at the archives of this site, I sure do miss some of the old days, and chatting with users no longer active here!
This was my first iPod, and still my favorite. Loved the light-up red buttons, loved the touch wheel, loved the super-long headphone remote, and it came with a dock included and a freaking leather case. And you could play brick smasher or whatever game that was.

This is beyond throwback. I remember my first iPod Mini 1st Gen when they released different colors. I got the green one for my bday, I thought I was the coolest kid in high school. Then I upgraded a few years later to the iPod 5th Gen with video. Those were the days.

Recently realized I HAD to take up my old exercise routine that I had skipped for several years, BUT it seems my beloved Shuffle will no longer take any charge (anyone got any solutions to THAT?). BUT didn't they kill any and all iPods in 2017 (of course they did)? Major bummer, now I have to go look for something from OUTSIDE APPLE.

Less so than the decade of Macs before it sure, but I went most of my childhood without encountering Macs in daily life. iPods on the other hand were everywhere.
iMacs weren't as mainstream as the iPod later became. But they also weren't confined to Apple fans.

Dell and other PC manufacturers held on to the PC market simply because those basic Windows XP PCs were cheap and good enough for basic home or school use. By the mid 00's iPods were ubiquitous, reasonably-priced, compatible with the aforementioned cheap PCs, and didn't have much actual competition (remember Zune?).

I was working for Apple in retail before the Apple stores and Apple was in rough shape financial back then. I remember when i first got my hands on it to help sell it. I was thinking to myself at first thought was why is apple making this $500 device when they should be concentrating on making better Mac computers when Apple was down to only 4% of the computer market and then it hit me!!!!

This is brilliant, how do get get the next generation that was buying PC's to return buying Apple products! You create a device that is simple with simple access to songs and they will buy it and maybe they will look at the Mac again. Well it worked. The only funny thing was my first customer was a PC user and the iPod had firewire :)

So i had him get a firewire PCI card for his PC and it would show up as a drive and he could move his files over the hard way :)

There are already two products similar to this on the market. The Nomad Jukebox and the Archos Jukebox which can come with a 20 gig hard drive.

I had the Nomad jukebox, and it really kicked butt, but it was HUGE, the size of a "portable" DVD player/discman back then, and then I transitioned to the Archos portable video player, which was a REALLY nice device (with maybe the worst customer service of any company in existence), and you could record video directly off of TV/cable out plugs.

So no, I personally never really thought the iPod was a great device.

Adding the phone changed everything.

This is hilarious and just sums up some of the posters on here. I can’t wait to see some of the ridiculous negativity currently being posted in a couple of decades time.

That is correct, MP3's were thing, but they were bulky, hard to use from a non-techie person and the biggest thing it lent it to pirating of music. The music companies were in the process of kill digital music files until steve convinced them to sell songs again like old 45's create a protected file that you could burn music to a blank CD 10 time and have a whopping 5 device support.

Why when you walk into Target and look at the music and movie isle, because people are streaming more. This makes it easier for the customer to get media. But it also cuts down on pirating of media.

And don't even get me on the subject of Amazon firesticks and Cody!! Theft is Theft even if you think you can try to justify it in your mind. Pay your subscription and stop stealing content.

I still by 4k movies on disc because the video and audio quality is superior to steaming!
Can we say playstation 5!
