lame if you have to carry around an accessory to play

i would rather it need an accessory to play games... i like the simplicity of the iPods... i definately dont want one with a bunch of different colored buttons or a freaky joystick sticking out of it...

New iPod nanos? Eventually, yes. The ability to play Nintendo games on your iPod? I HIGHLY doubt it... come on!

I doubt it too. though I think by "Nintendo games" they mean Donkey Kong style game & watch vintage games. I can't imagine GBA games on the device or anything past NES, to be honest.

I think doubt is too harsh a word. It's certainly possible from a tech stand point, its just the red tape and Nintendo doing something that Apple never did (license out the true meaning of the companies key product)... but who knows.

If Apple opens the iPod up for software developers to make games, it could very well be at WWDC...

Exactly. And with a really cool easy-to-use "game maker" app, too. Then a "game distribution system" via iTMS. And as far as the interface is concerned, if it's a "true video iPod" with a screen that takes the whole front, it could be touch-screen. Seeing how well Nintendo is doing with the Nintendo DS, Apple could want to follow in the same path (touch-screen games only).

Seconded! I think the sticking out of dock thingy was a good idea, and, really, a good mock-up.

You can count me in for that as well, a Silver iPod Nano would be nice

I know my girlfriend is wanting a pink iPod Nano for Xmas......

Remember Full Screen iPod

It would be simple to have a game interface if the whole iPod screen could be used for whatever purpose the interface developers could conceive.

you could design any interface even the original Nintendo controller on the bottom half of the screen and the top would be the game, that way you could maintain the old aspect ratio...

New Nano Wii Connectivity? The Wii release isn't that far off, and it enables people to download NES games on it's virtual console, so it's a good match. I would love to see what the Nano will actually look like.

Something like the MacPod concept would be awesome. Still sleek and simple but still plenty of buttons.

Please Apple, Up the feature set.

I've got a big family. Me, the wife and four kids. We have always been huge Apple fans. My wife and I have iMacs and the three older kids have Nanos and the youngest has a shuffle.

When my wife told me she wanted a Nano as well, I asked if it had to be a Nano, she are I are not really the keep up with the Joneses types. I had been seeing these Nano knock offs on eBay. She was skeptical, so I told her I would take it if she didn't like it and buy her a Nano.

I bought her this player: http://www.uxcell.com/uxcell/retail/item/showItemLayout.php?action=showItem&id=mv0blk1024mp022

I'm not bashing Apple, nor am I marketing for this product. But we were really impressed, although my kids laugh at it because it's not an iPod. The player has 1 GB Flash (It's really 1 Gig), FM Radio, Jpeg Viewer, Video Player (granted had to convert to AMV), Ebook reader (I love it), Tetris Game and Voice recorder or FM radio recorder. The controls are not as nice as Apple's scroll wheel, and the software is not near as polished. The player shows up on my desktop as a flash drive and I just copy the MP3's, books and pics over, but I really hate that I have to use Windows (using VPC 7) to convert the video. There is not a Mac version of the video converter.

It uses a Samsung media chip and costs $75.00 delivered to my door. I'm hoping that it's the same Samsung chip that Apple is supposedly changing to.

For the life of me I don't understand why Apple doesn't add a whole lot more features to the Nano. I would pay $250.00 for this Nano knockoff if it had Apple's software, scroll wheel and used iTunes.

I liked it so much that I bought myself the Titanium version: http://www.uxcell.com/uxcell/retail/item/showItemLayout.php?action=showItem&id=mv0wht1024mp029

I know Apple already owns the market, but they would absolutely slam the door on future competitive products by adding some of these features. I was really supprised at how good the video was on the 1.5" screen. (hehe I load about 6 episodes of M.A.S.H at a time).

I love Apple's products so much, and I will never switch computers, but unlike my kids I don't have to have the hip player. I just sincerely wish that Apple would take this Nano knock off, incorporate the features and put the Apple pizzaz on it.

Sorry for writing a book, and I understand if you flame. I'm really not trying to promote any other player, nor bash Apple in any way.

not at WWDC. developers, not consumers.

maybe around a week later methinks.

EDIT:
oh, and the game thing, would be cool

Unless of course, they are announcing to developers of Nintendo games what they'll want to do to make sure they can be played on the new iPods....

:p

I've come to the conclusion with Apple always expect the unexpected and personally I think we will see a new iPod, new PowerMac (Mac Pro?) and maybe another little Apple surprise at WWDC this August.

A new iPod would be sweet because I need a new one ;)

Game-Pad Pod

The game-pad picture looks just like the COLECO VISION controller!!!
(at least the one labeled iPod phone does).

ThinkSecret: What happened to you man? You used to be cool.

Ok, first off, this is, like the Movie Rental thing yesterday, complete BS.

Complete is probably too strong a word, but the basic point is that TS has not heard this from an actual source who would know the facts here. How do we know? Because TS is claiming this will be announced at a developer's conference. This is a consumer device, and only the game playing part (which I'll get to in a moment) is remotely relevent to the audience. It will not attract the publicity it needs, and it will piss off the audience there if they lose one minute of Mac Pro and Leopard previews to learn about new multimedia products.

And the game playing part apparently requires an additional widget to be attached to the iPod. That doesn't make much sense either. That would be 100% unapple.

ThinkSecret seems to have a strategy at the moment which involves posting educated guesses about what Apple is about to do on their front page. I can play that game too.

EXCLUSIVE: Apple is prepping a new version of the iMac, to be released in September. Based around Intel's Core 2 Duo, it's entirely 64 bit. The machines will come with bigger hard drives and faster clock rates than the current iMacs that they'll be replacing. The new iMac will also be undergoing a name change to fit in with the new Mac naming convention: it'll be called the Mac 6400.

90% of the above makes perfect sense. It might even be true. However, the last fact tells you (well, that, and the fact I'm peharri, peharri for crying out loud, the guy who wrote "Red Tuesday") I'm making it up.

And that's TS's problem. I really don't know if:

1. A real Apple insider is calling them, but feeding them BS, in an attempt to discredit TS.
2. Apple employees are being fed BS, probably slightly differing versions, in an attempt to discredit rumour sites and root out who's leaking the info (picture Jobs in the Culputino black tower of doom, buzzards squarking, a hooded henchman guy at his feet handing over a folder saying "Did I please you mahster?", and Jobs reading the folder saying "Good, Good. The external widget and the WWDC. This is the version we passed on to all the employees whose surname starts with a "T".)
3. TS is making stuff up based upon edumucated guesses, but doesn't have the talent to figure out when it's completely wrong.

Alternatively, I may be wrong, but if so, there are going to be a lot of pissed off developers in a few weeks.

Most likely scenarios:

1. A movie store is in the works. It may go rental only, though not necessarily against Job's wishes (given the previous talk involved iDisks and such, a rental model might actually work better and be a more universal system that has simpler DRM, cross platform support, no unfufilled expectations of DVD burning, and work with the "one price" model Jobs prefers to the tiered pricing that would be more appropriate once prices start hitting $10 a movie) But we don't actually know anything about it, including what I've just mentioned, it's all speculation based upon the fact we know it's something Apple wants and the movie industry wants.

It will not be announced at the WWDC.

2. New iPods are in the works. Well, they're always in the works. AppleInsider's hints seem probable, but only because they've had a good trackrecord of late. They're unlikely to be launched at the WWDC. However, if they have something that interests third party developers, like the ability to play third party games, then we'll probably see some mention of an already launched product in the keynote.

- that is, no iPod at the keynote unless the iPod has already been launched and it includes third party developer support.

That's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

I really hope all of this arrives before the Back to School rebate ends. Core 2 Duo iMacs and a new Nano? :D

My debit card is ready.

No kidding, I've been waiting for the merom mbp forever, which coincided nicely (as I fervently hoped) with Student Union. However, when I started hearing about changes to the ipod nano line up (Mg case, bigger capacity, etc) slated for october or november, I started getting worried, that I wouldn't be able to get a rebated one. I started coming up with schemes like asking an apple store to sell me the mbp in august with some kind of certificate for the next ipod, but I new that wouldn't work. This is pretty fantastic news, if its to be trusted.

Ahh, peharri, you crack me up. You make way too much sense to be posting in this forum--but please continue, I love reading it!

You're totally right on this one. But, to play devil's advocate, an iPod revision could coincide with WWDC because it's relatively close to the beginning of back to school season. Remember, WWDC was pushed back this year somewhat.

But you're right about the likelihood of Mr. Jobs introducing it at his keynote address. However, perhaps his ace in the hole is the prospect of opening up a more robust iPod system for third party development...with the head start the iPod has on the competition, that could potentially spell doom for other competing devices on the horizon. Argo who?

I personally would love that, because then the iPod could be more of a portable media center than it already is. Improved video out capability would be awesome, in my opinion.

Keep up the good work.

No No No No No.

There will be no nintendo games. Nintendo games require more inputs... Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, start, & select at the very least. The Nano has the multi-directional pad, yes, but only one button. Unless Apple changes the interface on the nano (unlikely), there will be no nintendo games.

Think, people, think!

Clive don't you know anything...its Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A Start...jeez.

Kresh....tried to pm you, is that thing the real deal? Looks pretty sweet. You have an email or something?

Yay! I have always wanted to play Nintendo games on my iPod. Mario would be great with the scroll wheel.... great thumb exercise! The games should come with the Mario theme songs... so you don't have to be playing the actual games to enjoy that outstanding music.

Seriously guys, let's make it happen.

I was thinking the same thing. But isn't it 'up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, SELECT, start'? I can't remember.
