Kind of a huge gap, don'cha think? For an extra $100 I can nearly TRIPLE the capacity? Why would I even consider a 30 GB model?

Shoulda been 60gb and 80gb like originally reported on some outlets. I could actually see myself buying the cheaper one then.

We waited 334 days for this? That is how long we went without an iPod update, by far the longest gap in updates, and all we get is larger storage capacity and a few new games?

In the past 2 quarters, for the first time since Apple introduced the iPod, iPod sales have declined. Last quarter, Apple sold just over 8 million iPods, down from a peak of over 14 million 2 quarters ago. The reason is because people bought new iPods, and there was no reason to replace them because it took Apple so long to update the models. Now, after all of the wait (nearly a year) and speculation about 16x9 video iPods, touch-screen controls, wireless capabilities, etc., I think this update will go mostly unnoticed to consumers and iPod sales will continue to fall. Apple needs to drastically change and improve iPod offerings if it wants to maintain its market advantage and keep the iPod fashionable.

The fact you seem to miss is that the Nano is by far the biggest selling iPod. And they did a pretty nice update to it, what more would you want in that model? They definitely will update the "big" ipod at some point, but there are some MAJOR technological hurdles to overcome, especially battery life for video and the no-touch interface. We'd all love to see it, but apple really needs to take their time and get it right if it's truly going to be groundbreaking.

iPod w/video sales probably won't do much (except for the price drop, which is pretty nice), but nanos and shuffles should sell like mad. I'd be shocked if iPod sales don't spike back up again.

I just checked on the Apple site, and there isn't a new iPod updater to include the new software updates for the original 5G iPods.

I thought updates were now going to be handled by iTunes. Maybe the updates haven't been made available to it online yet. After all, iTunes and QT haven't showed up in software update either.

Edit: The REAL question is have they updated iTunes to be a better video player? I hate watching TV or movies in the current version.

There definitely are new video features, although you'll have to see for yourself if your specific complaints are addressed.

Dear Apple,

I appoligise for my earlier outburst.
I really do love you.

Well.... In a creepy-ish kind of way. THATS NOT THE POINT!!!!!

I want the 8GB nano in green.

Love,
Nathan

OH WELL. thank you for pointing out my rudeness...

as a matter of fact, i have been quite sensitive now that i've seen the new one coming out right after my recent purchase of the OLD one, DAMMIT

that aside.....
didn't i clarify that i've been to apple store to check out its spec as well? or maybe i didn't but that's not the problem here

yes, i did go to that freaking apple store and looked for the spec, but only the maximum battery life was specified, and max for video play for only 80 gig was mentioned there, not for 30g, dammit

or maybe i couldn't find it? i was being too lazy? well then go look for it yourself, gosh

Off Apple's website that he pointed you to:
Playback time (30GB model)

* Music playback time: Up to 14 hours when fully charged
* Photo slideshow with music viewing time: Up to 4 hours when fully charged
* Video playback time: Up to 3.5 hours when fully charged

Looks good to me

I currently have a 3gen 40GB iPod.
I've been waiting forever for the 80GB to show up.

I use mine for music/ data storage and photo backup storage off microdrives and flash drives.

I just hope everyone knows this looks like a stop gap on the iPod side of things. I willing to bet another iPod gets released right before X'mas or at MacWorld. Probably the so call touch screen ver. and then everyone will whine again about something.

I was simply amazed by the iTV announcement!

Stop freaken whining!

I was going to comment on how happy I was with these updates but all I read about was the bad. Don't like it, don't buy it, don't whine.

Brighter displays, cheaper prices, games, movie downloads, better head phones. Wtf do you want?

Me = happy :D

Old stock???

In the past, when Apple has released new models, on the "deals" page, they would sell off the old *new boxed* stock for a little less than the new models. Sometimes these were a great deal, other times, not so much. Anyway, with the iMac and Mac Mini updates last week and the iPod updates today, it appears that there is no "old stock" products for sale from Apple. I was hoping to pick up the 5G/60GB to replace my 4G/60GB as I'd now like the bigger screen. Yes, I am looking for a deal... Or how about a 1G/1G shuffle for $49???

Does anyone know how Apple is getting rid of the old?

whoa.... well

what an embarrassment.
how come i couldn't find it anywhere??

anyway, dude, thanks alot... really appreciate that!!

and now i'd have to apologize my freaking visceral responses..... sorry guys if i offended you ....

but you know what? i just had to..........

if you were in my shoes..... you'd surely understand how i feel.......

anywho i'm glad that it's only 3.5........ well 1.5 hrs of difference? that's nothing, compared to...... well. i don't know, but the thing is i got early anyway, so no regrets from now on!!!

and yes, i don't need a 60 percent brighter screen, i don't need that freaking search bar, and i don't play game, period

so the bottom line : i made a right move..............................i hope

It's the nintendo thinking people...

"Let's give them games, more games!....and...and make it Brighter!!!" Yes, brighter!!"

-They must be in league.

Looks like the iPods are still at 5G with some tweaks, which is weird considering they had a whole year. I feel no urge to upgrade my current model no major difference for me. Search functions would be pretty sweet though. Wonder why they didnt just give the current 5G iPods that feature with a software update.

The new nanos look really tempting. a 4GB silver would go nicely with my PB.

My only problem is there doesn't seem to be an education discount right now on the new iPods. Just 249 and 349.

I'm guessing this will change once the current edu promotion is over...

Gapless was the #1 request?? Holy cow! Then what took them so friggin long?

I've been under the impression that gapless was only desired by 0.000001% of the users, and therefore Apple didn't give a damn about it. I assumed that the other 99.999999% of users only listen to shuffle mode and don't care about traditional albums. Seems pretty reasonable based on what's popular these days. But the #1 request? Surely this should have been fixed in the 2nd generation iPod then, 3rd generation at the latest.

I'm not complaining, this just really, really surprises me. I'm so happy to see that it's fixed, finally, so I can go out and buy a replacement iPod soon, after holding out for over a year. Better days are here to stay. ;)

my thoughts exactly... there aren't that much of a difference, right??

anyway, hey, are the search functions gonna be attainable for the last 5gen ipod as well ? with the software update??? i wish that's the case......please

i've been desperately looking for the reasons as to stick to the old 5gen which i bought just yesterday

Can sombody explain the following:

"old" 5G 30 GB: music playback 14 h, video playback 2 h.
"new" 5G 30 GB: music playback STILL 14 h, video playback ALMOST DOUBLED at 3.5 h.

That is the common sense reaction. You're seeing mac zealots here trying to trumpet how great these new iPods are.

Updating a 4:3 screen with another 4:3 screen and claiming it's improved is like Yugo rereleasing their car and claiming it's improved because the gas cap is a different color. It's still a Yugo.

laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame

although...secretly I'm happy, because I don't want to see my 5G be outdated so quick...I just bought it!

YES, another buddy who feel the same.............................

I am so glad that I didnt sell my ipod. I would really be kicking myself if I had of jumped the gun....taking a hit on the price plus having to pony up money to essentially buy back the same ipod.

*whew wipes sweat
