There are indeed new features that the 4G models have that the 3G and earlier models don't. But that's to be expected since they're a generation newer obviously. There aren't too many hardware or software products out there that continually update previous generation models to bring them up to the current one or otherwise there would never be any reason to ever upgrade! :p

Oh, so I guess by your logic the new dual 2.5Ghz PowerMac G5's then shouldn't be able to run Mac OS 10.4 when it's released.

Go into the iPod's Settings menu, and pick About. The first line is your iPod's name.

They really should bring all the features to both as the hardware chip must be very similar.
The 3G and 4G do have rather different chipsets. The 4G more closely resembles the mini.

Can't happen. USB doesn't provide enough power. I think that power over USB is only about a third of FireWire power. Yet another reason that FireWire kicks the **** out of USB. :D

Except the 4G iPods can be charged over USB.

Buy it a drink? Oh, um, if the iPod is showing up on your desktop, it should show a name underneath. Mine's named scottPod.

There is no reason they can't add shuffle to the 3g iPods.

How poorly Apple supports previous generations of iPods is reason enough not to buy another if you already own one... quite the opposite of Apple's marketing to get you to buy another.

a lot of you guys are assuming that the innards of the 4G iPod are exactly like the innards of the 3G and therefore the 3G should be able to do everything the 4G can. somehow i don't think this is entirely the case. then again i don't even own an iPod, so i wouldn't really know. but if having a 3G iPod is so bad i'll gladly take it off your hands for you.

This is the same thing everyone said with the 2nd to 3rd generations.

Enough already.

Got excited when I saw this in my software updater, however I then realized it's only for click-wheel iPods. I hope Apple isn't going to abandon updates for the 1G, 2G and 3G iPods just yet - my 3G is only a few months old!

Yes, a 15 GB 3rd generation.

As AppleMatt already said, can I play audiobooks at faster speeds without changing pitch?

Where's the pull head phone feature that will pause the music when I remove the head phones?

(possibly) Improved usage of battery through firmware update?

Charge via USB? (don't know if that is firmware or not though)

And if this is true, can I do anything with the AirPort Express?

To be fair the 4th Gen is completely new inside according to apple.

While its nice they added "shuffle songs" to the main menu, it's not a new feature, at all.

The 4th Gen ipod CAN charge from USB, it takes a little longer though...

from Cnet: "An Apple spokesperson clarified this, saying that recharge time is only 3 hours when using FireWire, though the process over USB will take longer."

I am in the same boat...this really sux that an almost new ipod is now looking like its been left behind for cool features and support...

Pity Apple dont have a trade up option for iPods in their first 6months-year to keep fans happy... dreaming I know...

i wish...

i was really hoping for a enhancement to the 3g iPods (i have a 30 gb) and was struck down by the iPod gods... and you know their out there... every time a iPod battery dies, someone has chose a music player other than a iPod. one day, iPod batteries will last forever!!!!! :D very interesting though, maybe a iTunes 4.7 on the way??

Added Support For ADS Pyro Firewire Card

The 3.0.1 update seems to have added support for my ADS Pryo firewire card! You know how these things can come and go though... Hope it still sees my 4G 40Gb iPod tomorrow.

Buh Bye USB 1.1!

It's a long story of no firewire support, and a cheap USB 2.0 card that showed up as both 2.0 and 1.1. Of course all the hardware ended up on the 1.1 side. I hate Windows XP! (No suggestions for fixing the USB 2.0 please... I've tried everything! It's just a worthless card.)

They don't need to add it because it's already there. The 3G I use here (it's named iMeowpod) has always had shuffle play.

Hope it updates my 1G

Hope it updates my 1G Dual G5. I had it less than a year (orD3rEd 1+ +H3 D4Y 1T c4mE 0u+!!!! p0weR U$3r!!!!! ) and already the newest G5 goes faster. I'm never buying anotha CRAPple product 'cause they are treating me like such a bitch. 1'm g3++iN 4N Al1en 8oaRD SY5+Em (Y0U 4R3 5o 0wn3d) 4Nd 4 RIO kR@Pa pl4Y3r. 5crew j00 J0BZ!

Interesting discussions on older generations etc. I really didn't read too much that seemed like it was on topic. I am too deep into projects to install all the recent updates yet. So I was wondering if anyone who has an iPod 4G has installed the update and noticed improvements or problems. That would be more helpful than a lot of the posts.

In response to those posts - my opinion is that if you bought an older iPod because you liked what it had to offer you should still be happy with it because it offers the same thing it did then. If you like what the new machines are capable of don't complain go buy one. My Macintosh LC couldn't run OS X so I bought a G4. My G4 couldn't author a DVD as quickly as a G5 so I bought a Dual G5.

Thanks in advance to those posters reporting on the good/bad of the update.

I can understand if apple doesn't add all the new 4G features to the 3G ipod but some are so easy to add it's like a kick in the nuts that they don't add them. What's so hard about adding the shuffle option on the 3G's menu??? I don't want a 4G iPod... I think it's ugly.
