I can understand if apple doesn't add all the new 4G features to the 3G ipod but some are so easy to add it's like a kick in the nuts that they don't add them. What's so hard about adding the shuffle option on the 3G's menu??? I don't want a 4G iPod... I think it's ugly.

The main menu shuffle is preset to go through your entire library from what I hear... you don't reallywant it. As for the ugly comment, well that's your opinion and you are entitled to it. Me, I finally want an iPod. Can't afford one now though. (Shakes fist at current economy)

Including playing audiobooks at faster speeds without changing pitch?
Where's this update?

AppleMatt

By the way, about that... After trying to listen to some of the 9/11 Commission hearings faster, I have come to the conclusion that the feature isn't really worth it. It seems to kind of chops out the space between words and it makes it much harder to listen to. All in all, I don't think anyone without this feature is missing much. However, I'm sure some people disagree ;)

I'm pretty sure the iPod changes book speed the same way Soundtrack and Garageband change sample speeds without altering pitch (and vice versa)--everything gets speeded up equally, not just the silent gaps (which really are non-existent in a lot of spoken sentences). Also, you can slow the book down--I bet more people use that than speeding up.

Damn it. I just sent my new 4G 40GB - my first iPod - in for work yesterday because it kept rebooting spontaneously. I wish someone had been able to tell me this was coming - I would have at least liked to have tried it before sending my 'pod off for weeks.

repairing the trackpad, screen, and casing on my powerbook had it back here 3 or 4 days after I sent it out. You'll get it back soon.

ipod

hey i just bought a new ipod and now i have a update to install nice. To bad its stuck in Shanghai because of bad weather fedex says they can do anything it sucks and i paid for 2 day shipping. i also agree apple should atlest still provide updates for the older ipods :(

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there seems to be something the matter with your keyboard. You might want to get that replaced too.

Good News

My 4th Generation iPod as of yesterday would not work over the firewire, so I used usb, with a usb 1.0 port.

Now, after the update, my firewire works great.

Jordan

Note: I was using the downsizer/adapter for a 6to4 pin.

Great!

Just in time for the arrival for my new iPod! Now....only if it would get here...or will Charlie delay its arrival!

Oh, so I guess by your logic the new dual 2.5Ghz PowerMac G5's then shouldn't be able to run Mac OS 10.4 when it's released.

No. The 3G (and 2G and 1G) iPod still plays the exact same music formats that the 4G does, so it's not remotely the same thing. My logic is that if you buy a 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 today, you shouldn't expect to receive a free upgrade bringing that Power Mac completely up to par with the 3.0GHz Power Mac G5s (new CPUs, video card, etc) when those eventually come along. Same thing if you bought a 3G iPod, you can't expect it to have all the additional features that the 4G does now that it's available. Otherwise nobody would ever buy the new model of anything...

Im gonna have to go ahead and say that this is quite funny...

I came on these forums... maybe somewhere else, im not sure about a month after I bought my 10gb 2g when the 3g came out...

I was whining about why they didnt offer firmware upgrades for my iPod...

All the 3g owners responded (In a mean tone, too) "Does it still do the same things as when you bought it?! Well then you have nothing to be angry about".

They sat there thinking their 3g would get free firmware updates for life... but as soon as the 4g comes out, those same people are now whining about why their ipods dont get new firmware updates..

Lol... what goes around comes around I guess, and in the end we all take it up the tailpipe from Apple. :D

ouch, hehe, this must be rather sweet for you to be watching others go through this then now huh? :)

I'm a 3G owner and I'm still happy with it, however I really... REALLY would like the shuffle command right there in the front like that instead of having to go through a menu or two more. For those of you who can't figure out why try playing around with your ipod in LA traffic (and no it's not sitting there with the breaks on the entire time...)

Overall though I personally think apple should continue to deliver updates to all ipods. Other companies continue to deliver updates to their previous products. Look at videocards, they all do the same thing but now and then the company will release drivers that releases new features or gives more performance or something else, different market yes but despite that I would like apple to do the same.

I also don't think it would really hurt the 4G sales... If someone is going to buy one, they will. The ipod is very much a piece of status as is it a mp3 player. At my school you RARELY see a 1G or a 2G ipod, they can be found yes, but the 3Gs are the ones you see. If someone feels that they have to have the latest design they'll do it. I'm not sure how many people out there would think that 300 dollars and up is worth it for a few new features and improved battery life...

speaking of battery life anyone know the website that sold replacement 3G ipod batteries that last longer? :) (35 dollars or so is worth that ^-^)

iPod Updater 2004-08-06 contains the same software versions as iPod Updater 2004-07-15 for all other iPod models

am i the only one who read this part and isnt pissed about not getting updates? (yeah, i have a 3G...and it's name is Englebert Humperdinck)

No...but you're definitely the only one who posted in this thread without reading it.

The shuffle feature on the 4G is a complete ripoff. I don't know if someone screwed up or if Apple committed a rare act of utterly boneheaded design.

What Apple originally claimed it would do:
Allow you to turn shuffle on and off at the Main Menu level. This implies shuffling songs or albums within playlists, artist lists, album lists, etc.

What Apple's website (but not the 4G's manual, which hasn't been rewritten yet) NOW says it will do:
Shuffle all the songs in your whole library. One minute Pavarotti is belting out "Nessun Dorma," the next minute Alice in Chains has come to kill the rooster. Jarring? Yes. Half-assed? Indeed. Not quite what people had in mind when they first learned that Shuffle could now be activated from the main level? You betcha.

I was just about to take one up the tailpipe, as someone put it, and buy the 4G model. I already had a buyer for my 3G. But now I've changed my mind. That was the number one new feature I wanted.

there hasn't been many replies from 4G owners who have installed this...did it work ok or did people have problems? i'm still holding off, but i like the promise of improved power management...

I don't have an iPod, but I went ahead and installed it last evening. All caught up on my "Software Updates." :)
