Just a wee note...

I just ran this latest iPod updater on my 60Gb Photo, and chose the "Update" option. This is from Apple's README file that accompanies the updater:

"• Update: If you choose Update, the software on your iPod is updated with the new version of software. Songs and other data on iPod are not affected. If your iPod already has up-to-date software, the Update choice is not available."

However, I found that the 1100 photos I had sitting on my iPod WERE in fact wiped as a result of the update.

Just letting you all know, because it takes quite a long time for iTunes to optimise all these photos... and to have to do it all over again... well, you know!

does anyone else notice that they said "iPod with color display" instead of "iPod Photo"?

just wondering...
I believe the new packaging for the 30GB and 60GB Color (Photo) iPods now say "iPod Color" on them instead of saying "iPod Photo". So who knows what Apple is planning.

Wishing they'd add "Rating" to the browse list (yes, I've fed this back to Apple). :(
Smart Playlists allow you to browse ANYTHING. Any rating, any range of ratings, etc.

My main playlist I almost always use is my top-rated songs MINUS any I've heard in the last month. Once a song gets a "month old" again it's back in the shuffle and might pop up again.

And now I've made three such playlists depending on just HOW high I want to limit the ratings.

Over at iPodLounge a couple of people said that the re-optimizing process helps if you see problems with the new transitions. So you might have to do it for that reason too.

Of course this update still does not address the firewire mounting issues.... UGGG

On my Ipod I have 4700 photos. They were not wiped out, but for some reason, Itunes decided to re-optimize and download all of them.. About 4 hours!

Uhh, that isn't "crap". Of course you aren't going to list a camera you haven't tested. What if it turns out to have an obscure bug and doesn't work?

For the record, Apple has listed elsewhere (I don't know where, but I've seen the instructions in another article here) how to determine if your camera works, by plugging it into image capture and checking the interface.
Right. They're covering their butts...but I was just making a point that the list IS DEFINATELY not all inclusive, some people were still talking about the fact their camera isn't listed means it's not supported. I was just saying most camera WILL work...they have just not been tested...yet.

bug?

I found a bug with the "Random" transition setting. After one or two photos switch, my iPod photo gets stuck, transitioning the same photo into itself. It could be because I didn't let iTunes "optimize" all of my photos after the upgrade to 1.1. But I'm not sure yet...

EDIT:
I didn't have time this morning to "optimize" all 1,200 photos

My iPod photo 30gig (just received this week) says iPod Photo on the box, not iPod color. For what it's worth.

not sure? you might want to finish that 'optimization' first. ;)

Something else...

I've just noticed something else with my iPod Photo now that I'm running 1.1.

My photos, when displayed on the iPod, show the heading "Feb 2040" at the top of the screen rather than their folder name. Not only that, but my photos are no longer sorted in order like they used to be under version 1.0 of the software.

Does anyone know why this would be? I'm close to reformatting my iPod and starting over...

Apple hates firewire now

That's what it seems like, and I like firewire! What a bummer. The only thing that sucks about firewire to me is how difficult it is to pull the cable from my Mac, but it get's recognized by the computer really quickly and has a really fast transfer speed. I think it's great.

I think this is new to the iPod, though a "compilation" feature has been in iTunes for awhile. I don't remember seeing it there on the iPod before either, but quite honestly I don't remember not seeing it, so maybe it has been there?

Seems like it's not exactly the same or as useful as the iTunes function. Turning compilations "On" simply adds another category ("Compilation") to browse by. It does not appear to remove those albums, or more importantly those artists, from the "Albums" or "Artists" browse lists.

Turning on compilations definitely removes the relevant artists when browsing by artist. I've been waiting for this feature for so long...I don't know how many times I've had to explain to friends browsing my iPod that no, I don't actually like Linkin Park, they just happen to have a song thats on the Matrix soundtrack ;)

I've just installed on my new iPod Photo 30GB and it's working just fine.

Initially I encountered bugs with artefacts left behind from transitions on slide shows, but when I synced with iTunes, it re-optimised all my photos and this seemed to fix the problem.

Another new feature (I think) you can now select "Now Playing" as music for a slide show - strange if they didn't have this feature before, since it's so handy.

Also - I suspect the reason that iTunes only supports .psd files not Mac not Windows is because Quartz in Mac OS X provides support for this format - it's not supported by Windows, so would involve a lot more work on Apple's part - that's just my guess.

Looking forward to getting a camera adaptor - I wonder if they have them at the London Apple Store yet - anyone know?

I'm heading out that way tomorrow - if I get a chance I'll stop in and let you know. Anything for an excuse to waste time in the Apple Store really - I just love that big glass staircase.

Long time lurker, first-time poster.

Had the same problem on my 30GB iPod Photo, but after the photos were re-optimised it's been fine.

I've downloaded and installed this update three times now, and Software Update is still popping up and telling me to install it. I've repaired permissions. I'll try the standalone update and see what happens.

Edit: That fixed it :)

nice to have you as a part of the MacRumors community. :)

I just checked on my 40GB ipod (before the update), and there's no compilation setting in the iPod. I'm downloading the update right now, so I'll check for the new option once it is installed.

do iPhoto5 slideshows now sync?

iPhoto 5 has separate albums and slideshows.

When I sync to the iPod Photo 30GB, it syncs albums, not slideshows. So if there is music on the slideshow, I don't get it automatically on the iPod, unless I've set that up within the album too.

Anyone know if that's corrected now?
Naturally, I'll try it myself....

ipod_camera_connector.jpg

I've just bought one from the Apple Store in Regents Street, London - I've posted details on the Camera Connector thread
