I've still got 3 iPods as well as the iPhone and they all still get a lot of use.

The iPhone doesn't have anything like enough storage capacity so my 160GB classic is still my main music source when I'm not at home.

Exactly; when I'm on long plane/train/bus journeys my iPod is a constant companion, as it is when I'm staying overseas for weeks or months at a time. And yes, I still like the classic, even though I have the iTouch (which is excellent, but, even now, I rarely use it for much else than music.)

Phones are usually supplied by whoever I am working with, and my MBA takes care of access to the internet, so, yes, the old style iPod is an invaluable (and much used) device, and one which I don't feel is obsolete.

Cheers

I'll always prefer to carry all my music with me, which means an iPod classic. Streaming only works if you have a connection, which is not always the case in the car, especially while off-roading.

So if Apple makes a 160 GB phone, sure. Until then, no.:)

Speaking of the car, an iPod is so annoying to use in the car. I have to look down and control it while driving.

IMO, CDs are still the most convenient, as much as I hate using them.

Maybe it would be better if I had a car that had special touch-screen iPod capability (where you could choose your song on the car's screen), but then I would still have to adjust the volume on the iPod itself, etc.

If your car has a 30-pin connector you can control the volume through the car. I haven't touched my iPod Classic that is in my glovebox since I put it in there.

iPods are not as demanded as they used to be but they are far from obsolete. I still use my iPod nano for jogging.

Also, a lot of people can't justify the price of an iPhone when iPods cost so much less, my girlfriend has an iPod she uses when travelling and for when her iPad is too big.

There's still a huge market for these devices, including children, and those who don't need a fancy phone.
EDIT: I forgot about the benefits of the massive iPod classic, for those with big libraries

Some good points but, isn't music one of the least battery draining things on the iphone? Also to the poster above-isn't unlimited data depend on the phone company not the type of phone?

I can see why some would prefer to keep music separate though.

Listening to music is one of the things that uses the least power on an iPhone. I've unplugged my phone from the charger and listened to music for an hour and the indicator still showed 100%.

I still bring both depending on what car I am using. If I am in the car I use for my job, I mostly use my iPhone 4 but occasionally bring my iPod Classic. My other car has a Pioneer DVD touch screen that has iPod integration built in and so I just keep my other Classic in there 24/7. I took that Classic out only once this past year to put new music on it.

I've been thinking myself that I will be very sad if the iPods go away which they will eventually I am sure. I will live however just using my iPhone.

That would be hasty if they phase it out.

I personally like to use my nano sometimes when running. I don't want to use my iPhone when I exercise.

Price. The initial iPod cost is a bit more than an iPhone (well, depending on the model) but that's the only price you pay. And there's no subscription or network charges.

I'll be sticking with an iPod+"random phone of the time" until the iPod is dead.

I still say the shuffle will go before the Nano Touch. Nano Touch in the gym for the win ;)

Perhaps now would be an appropriate time to point out the cost difference between a shuffle and a nano... Until that cost difference drops considerably, the Shuffle isn't going anywhere imho.

My iTunes music library is a meagre 5 GB. My movies and TV shows total over 120 GB. But, whatever Jobs says about how good the Retina display is, I'm not storing my whole film library on my iPhone to watch. That's what I got a nice big TV and an :apple:TV2 for... So the way I see it, the iPod classic is on the way out, followed by the shuffle. I can't see further than that. Any further speculation is kind of overdoing it imho.

When I look into the crystal ball here us what I see :

1. Shuffle and Nano Touch merged into one unit with a price in the middle of the units for an 8 GB version WITH touch screen :)
Largest Nano Touch will have 32 GB in next version.

A music player without a screen is so last decade in my view.

2. The next iPod Touch largest model will have 128 GB thus sending the iPod classic into execution in the guillotine ;)

3. Next iPhone release will have 64 GB in the largest model, which means my last motive for getting an iPod larger in physical size than the Nano Touch is gone. I still need a small sized iPod with a display for the gym, because gym & fitness and a large delicate touch screen is NO GO !

The NanoTouch 16 GB is my perfect companion in the gym. Even when I drop it still is so light it hangs on to the end of my earphone cord !

Well i've never owned a 6th generation nano so i wouldn't know about that. Is it easy to change tracks without looking?

I clip the shuffle on my pants. Sometimes when i do Bent Over Dumbbell Rows i like to change tracks by hitting the buttons on the shuffle with my fist between reps. That and because the gym is not exactly a place where i would take something really expensive. You know, heavy weights and all. I dont want a 150$ device crushed by accident.

You go to next track by hitting the sleep/wake button on top of the NanoTouch twice :)

If I drop weights on my NanoTouch I will drop it on myself because I have the NanoTouch 'clipsed' to my polo ;)

I just prefer to carry most of my personal 5 starred music collection with me to the gym - and for that I need 16 GB or more and a display where I can change to a track further down the playlist without having to press 'next track' for a long time - like I would have had to on a shuffle.

Different strokes for different folks :p

Oh i see! You know, i've been meaning to pick one up but i've just havent been able to justify the purchase when the shuffle works well for me so far! :)

If the September updates to the nano are good enough, i might just pick one up anyways! If only for the bigger storage. Gets kinda old having to resync different playlists on the shuffle sometimes, i admit!

My only issue with these things on the gym is the cable on the headphones! I dont know what to do with the cord to keep it out of the way but put it under my shirt. But then i get sweaty and the headphone cord gets all nasty and... yeah you get it! I want wireless headphones! If the 7th gen nano has that then i would pick one up on day one! XD

Selling my iPod Classic and will only use my iPhone from now on for my music on the go needs. Even at the gym. I know others are doing the same too and this will only continue stronger as future iPhone's have larger storage capacities.

My Classic is the only device, aside from my Macbook, which is capable of holding all my Music and Audio Books (about 100 Gigabytes). Not even thinking about selling my good old iPod Classic 120 Gigabyte. Quite the opposite really. As my library grows, I will consider exchanging the device with the 160 Gigabyte Model.

The only downside is the HDD, which does not allow me to heavily use the Classic while exercising.

I understand the iPod Classic is not for everyone. Bear in mind though that it has its users and those people know very well why they purchased this iPod in the first place.

'Ipods to be obsolete?' My Answer: Hell no!!

I want wireless headphones!
Wireless headphones or earphones? Because if your talking earphones than the only pair I know of are these pair that are made by Sennheiser. I guess they would be all right for working out but not much else, you can only listen to them for 3 hours on a full charge and then you have to recharge them.
