well, a whoping 80% of users would like some sort of IRC revival so far - i think thats a pretty positive result for the channel!

Remember, that's 80% (now 64%) of the votes, not 80% of the users (only 28 votes out of so many thousand users). ;)

I was going to mention the same thing. That "80%" is more like 0.00605% Now we know how politicians use statistics! :D

Sarcasm aside, that's looking good. I might drop in myself tonight.
please do :) im always asleep for the 5 or so hrs prior to this comment, but i try to come on when i can. might see you there :)

its 80% of all current voting users that want some form of IRC. i added them up using spotlight haha.

only one person replying you mean. im currently at work so my replies are a little delayed. dont judge so hardly - you dont like this idea do you?
Unless I am in the wrong room there was only 1 person in there. I went back in a few minutes ago.

I love IRC I always hang out in the twit irc all the time.

baha get in more! :p

just another update for this thread - we have an ever increasing user base, it used to be just around night time in the US when people were on - but now its sort of whenever!

if you have any questions or just want a chat, feel free to come on and ask!

wow cant believe its been a month already. im still there and so are a bunch of other users.

if you need any live mac help - give us a look! :D

You should set up a web page that connects to the chat. IRC is too complicated for most normal people to get their head around.

macrumors currently already has one located at macrumors.com/irc - unfortunately it is no longer registered and leaves annoying messages each time you type. i am in the process of getting an online (and easy) to use website hosted from elsewhere.

in the mean time, you can use Adium to join, or the macrumors.com/irc implementation. there is also the original app which is preconfigured (in first post).

What would be nice is a little bit of php at the top of the forums listing the server name, chatroom name and number of current users - I am sure there is a php geek to do this on here (maybe an admin can chirp in with the possibility of allowing/.adding this site feature) - ?

blast from the past - I forgot how I used to enjoy rambling on in irc channels :)
haha its like that isnt it! helps with my exam study. (not)

now that would be cool. and im sure its possible! i have no clue how it would be done though. i wonder if this would be helpful? it can make statistics to php/html based on a Java Bot. im not sure what the MR Bot is (its on the channel there).

I don't think there should be IRc for anything remotely useful. It's better to have that stuff in a forum, for later searching and reference.

I wouldn't mind an IRC channel devoted to bitching and whining, 'I'm tracking my iPhone online' and other random fanboi trollism.

maybe move all the iPhone forums and dump them in IRC ;)

but seriously though - the amount of detail that can be exchanged over IRC compared to the forums is probably about 10x more "in depth". you see conversations where a bunch of people help a user that you just would not see on the forums. its also done in a matter of minutes instead of a matter of hours. when somebody has lost their data, or needs help installing something - that really makes a difference to their experience and improves their view on both IRC and MacRumors.

Not to mention a bot can be setup to capture those transcripts and upload it to MR site, something like bash.org.

there already is a bot that probably already captures everything - but transcripting the conversations that go on would be a ridiculous idea IMO. as most things would be OT. it would mean somebody would have to trawl through it and find the useful stuff to post or whatever.
