I'm pretty sure that if you have a reference card, there shouldn't be issues but if you had to do some ROM editing / hacking to get your card to work initially, then you may have issues that require the help of netkas / Rominator (on netkas's forums) or Cindori.

Exactly. Any 4870 which looks like below (notice AMD logo on PCB, not all red PCB are reference):

will be immune to all updates (present and future).

Reference cards (or very close to) flashed with untouched OEM Apple ROM are safe.

XFX HD4870, HD-487A-ZHDC.

Tested with Cinebench and OpenGL. No change from before update. It just works.

I think the only caveat that needs adding to this statement is that in theory, Apple could add checks to an OS update that looks for differences between Apple 4870's and flashed ones....For example the amount of on-board RAM, since the ZDFC's have 1GB vs the Apple 512MB.

I think this is unlikely to happen since it would be a deliberate attempt to cripple an otherwise perfectly working system. There is no logical reason why a flashed reference card shouldn't perform in exactly the same manner as an Apple one.

Success.

Just finished updating and went without a hitch. So it looks like the card I have is pretty much the reference card.

I did a full CCC to my external drive. Ran update and my mac pro rebooted. I saw the grey boot screen with apple logo and after that everything loaded backup.

I ran Cinebench and my score went from 27.83 under 10.6.4 to 27.99 under 10.6.5

so my video card is XFX HD-487A-ZDFC and I can confirm that update worked without issues.

Xfx 4870

Ammon,
Did you find a solution? I inadvertently upgraded to 10.6.5 myself and lost my card. Now when I boot up, I go past the grey screen to a blue screen darker, then lighter. I am able to boot into safe mode so far, haven't tried anything else yet.

able to boot but no QE

I'm now able to boot normally, but still no QE. Has anyone gained QE back yet?

What a nightmare. I have lost my dual monitor setup on my flashed 4870 thanks to this update.

Somebody please help. I don't want to have to throw this 4870 out and go back to the 7300GT.

tried the old patch for the 10.6.4 update and now all I get is the blue screen at startup and nothing beyond that.

what did you do to fix the boot problem?

This might sound like a dumb question, but how do I go back to 10.6.4? Is this even possible? Can I d/l the 10.6.4 update and install it and it will revert back, or will it just mess things up worse? Do I have to restore 10.6 from the boot CD first?

I initially was able to boot into 10.6.5, but I didn't have QE. I naively used ATI10.6.4Patch.pkg trying to get QE back, but that is what broke my being able to boot. After booting into safe mode (shift key while rebooting), I had to reinstall the 10.6.5 combo updater, this got me back to being able to boot, still without QE though. Each card can be different.

Sapphire 1002791GL

I guess it's my bad luck, but after updating to 10.6.5 my 1GB Sapphire 1002791GL doesn't work. I can boot into the OS, but plugging in a second monitor causes a kernel panic. Wish I had the 1002591GL as the previous poster said it works perfectly. Damn.

I wish I was so lucky. My experience is the same as two previous posters in this thread.

10.6.5 update broke QE/CI for my flashed XFX 4870 1GB.

Does anybody have any idea if the QE/CI patch netkas just released will help those of us with 4870s that are no longer working in 10.6.5?

http://netkas.org/?p=564

The patch netkas released did not help me with my 4870. No QE/CI, and I'm on software renderer. I don't have a solution yet.
