I'm 13 and have an iPhone. Paid for the thing myself, and my parents are paying for the plan. (My parents wanted me to get a cell phone, because they're very useful for communication.) The plan is the same one I had with my crappy RAZR V3i I had since sixth grade, which, by the way, I also paid for myself. I find the iPhone to be a vast improvement over my V3i and worth every penny. My only worries are getting it stolen at school and damaging it, like in those nightmarish pictures where the glass has been completely shattered . It's nearly been a whole school year (1 month to go) and my iPhone hasn't been stolen, nor has anyone tried to, which is good. I keep it in my jeans pocket all the time. (NEVER put valuables in your backpack!) I think the chances of it getting stolen are bound to increase once I enter high school next year. Seniors and all that. :p

But will the iPhone be an option for a pre-paid service of any kind? If it's every month contract, I may wait it out...

I'd say it's definitely a possibility. As you probably know, there is the hidden pre-paid option here in the US. As I understand it, there is in the UK also. And certainly the iPhone can be unlocked and used on an "alien" PAYG plan. The question I guess will be how Australian (Vodafone, right?) PAYG works for data services. The iPhone, although perhaps not as badly as a Blackberry, is basically a lump of useless coal without data services.

(And P.S., yes, 14 is too young, even if she's hot.)

You decide

I have an iPhone and I'm 15. I love the thing and feel very blessed to have it, I helped buy it right after the price drop. Sometimes I regret buying it, being spoiled and having other classmates tell you how spoiled you are isn't a very good feeling, I never show it off or anything because I don't like people knowing I have one, plus the fear of breaking it or losing it kills me.

You're not too young, especially if you're saving up the moiney. Just wait for the 3G.

I am also fourteen. I took very good care of all my apple products, and haven't had any major problems. Luckily for me, my mac obsessed uncle is giving me his 32 gig iPhone, as soon as the iPhone 2 comes out :D (and keeping me on his AT&T plan!!!!!) :p

I did a smart move-i went to buy an iPod touch instead of an iPhone. I'm 18 in high school, I did not want to keep my iPhone in my pocket all day. I did not want it to get stolen. I just bring my iPod during my free peridos when I dont have gym. I'm from the USA in new jersey. Ive had an iPod stole. And it sucks when people steal. So I would think to get an iPod touch over the iPhone like I did.

Even though my phone is still expensive I still hide it, I even get attention when I use it because its a sexy phone, LG Venus to be exact.

you have an imac, macbook, iphone, and ipod.

sorry but that just disgusts me. but congrats if you bought an almost $2000 mac (or more..?), a $1100 laptop, a $400 phone, and a $250 ipod ON YOUR OWN....

hey!
I got my iPod touch on my fourteenth birthday, 5 months ago. people (including me) are still amazed and (especially me, a tekkie) obsessed with it. how many iPod touches do you think there are in a public school in a poor redneck town in southern Illinois? :p
I'm not worried about people stealing it... everyone knows its mine how would they get away with it? even my teachers know! and, I keep it on me at all times. charge it at least twice a day lol
I wasn't worried about scratches until I actually scratched it, a nice big one across the middle from dragging it accross the concrete (Dont judge me I thought it was scratch-proof!). I ordered some displex scratch remover, should be here in a few days. but until then I have it in a clear case in a leather pouch with a screen protector lol. and our school has unlocked wifi :) like to check MacRumors and web apps and play Kingdom Game in gym and recess if I can :)

OP: You sound like a very mature person. Like I said earlier, don't let people tell you that you're too young for this or that. You'll miss out on too much by excluding yourself from potentially rewarding opportunitites.

There are 14 year-olds out there smoking, drinking, and having sex [and children] (which I originally thought the thread might have been about). You just want a phone. I'm sure there are already lots of kids at your school with them already...

Why would you artificially limit yourself to one of the coolest, most convenient, communication/entertainment tools around?

People, it's an ***** iPhone, not a porno, not a violent movie, not anthing we would normally place an age restriction on. Fourteen is certainly old enough to have an iPhone.

There is a 100% chance it will be stolen.

If it is in the OP's pocket, how could it get stolen? Why is there any more chance of it getting stolen at HS than anywhere else? Why would someone steal a phone tied to someone else's phone number in a place where you see the same people every day, unless they were going to resell it (doubtful those resources are available)? Why is everybody using scare tactics? Why isn't anybody using their thinking caps?

Can you at least try to understand that he's concerned about the cost which is the only issue here?

Srsly.

To the first few posters, yes I'm aware of the current 3G status of the iPhone.

Im mainly interested because I want a new phone, and as my song library contineus to expand, it wont be long before my iPod will be completely full. I just figured, since I need a new ipod, and I want a new phone, it would be the best option.

Isn't the most common thing for phone's to drop prices dramaticly over time? I know a few people who bought phones only a few months old, with the RRP being around one thousand dollars, and them purchasing it for around three hundred.

If the price goes down, that would be better for me. As for the school thing, I don't actually my phone to school, as I never need it. Its more when Im shopping/out with friends/doing other random stuff.

What I'm pretty much trying to say, without dragging on even more, is that I need a larger capacity iPod, I don't need a new phone at the moment (but I do want one, heh) and I wont spend more than 500 dollars at all.

I NEED HELP.

Well, I suggest you to buy an iPod Touch or Classic instead.
Just buy the right thing fit for you.

its not just one country.....

I have an iPhone and I'm 15. I love the thing and feel very blessed to have it, I helped buy it right after the price drop. Sometimes I regret buying it, being spoiled and having other classmates tell you how spoiled you are isn't a very good feeling, I never show it off or anything because I don't like people knowing I have one, plus the fear of breaking it or losing it kills me.

you see, this seems like a very mature view of it. and that, i respect. i personally HATE people that are spoilt..... but Kyle, at least you have the maturity to see that you are blessed and dont draw attention to it. kudos to you :D

for the record. my mother handed me a VERY old bank statement today... of when i was 12.

it was when i had my paper run getting $14 A WEEK! (i dont even know how i managed!)
over 4 months.... i ended up with $480

very very feasible. time pays off. these guys that have posted have a very low disposable income (those that earn it) - but they also dont have anything/much to pay for.

everything started going down hill when i got my phone and my car. (definitely more so when i got my car)

those that get it all given to you, its up to your parents, not YOU.

those that earn their money.... obviously you understand how much of an outlay it is, and how much you are worried about it getting stolen or broken.
think about it very carefully. if all you need is a phone, then i dont think you need the iphone. if you have the money, have/are used to an mp3 player, THINK you can afford the ongoing expenses of about $30 a month..... then go for it.

if you know you will need a new phone in the future, think about what features you can (realistically) get on that new phone. then compare the iphone price ($500ish) with the cost of a classic/touch ($319/$399) plus a new phone. (anywhere from $50 to $500)

good luck to ya guys!
