hey guys,

just back from the apple store AGAIN! decided for definite to go for the rMBP, as the only thing bothering me was the dimensions, but the new rMBP is FAR slimmer than my 2010 MB. So the portability issue of the rMB isn't as great an issue now.

I also decided to go with the 8gb RAM as it will be more than enough for least the next 18-24 months and by then i can always upgrade. will post back when i get it.

hey guys,

my macbook 2010 is on its last legs, I'm looking at the base model rMBP to last me the next 2-4 years. i do basic task and nothing more, so to clarify will the 8gb be enough for the modest of tasks for this timeframe?

or am i better going through apple and maxing out at 16gb?

cheers, RTJ

Random question, what is wrong with your current Macbook?

hi,

the trackpad and keyboard don't work all the time, sometimes i need to reboot to allow the keyboard to start working and i thought a good time to get the latest MB to support latest OS features too.

Yeah that sounds a bit stuffed.. I was going to say that if it was just that your Mac was just slow that an SSD could improve things.

hi mate,

yeah, i have put a 64gb SSD in it, and don't get me wrong its fairly nippy, but all in all i think its time for a change, and TBH the new rMBP are really sharp!

IMHO if you're getting a new one 16GB is a must as you can of course not upgrade, but that may just be me. 8GB of ram may be fine, especially if its only 2-4 years you need it for.

i agree that 16gb would be nice, but even just now the 4gb 1067 ram is enough for my uses so I'm sure 8gb will hold me over for a couple of years then i can upgrade again once it becomes a bit like my current MB, as i will have some cash to burn by then hopefully lol!!

JHC, I'm now getting paranoid that 8gb might not be enough, will the OS releases over the next few years help manage 8gb onboard? or is 16gb the only way to go? bearing in mind my usage, i just don't want future OS to rape the ram that i have.

- As far as OS requirements as such, it's unlikely to move above 8 GB anytime soon. El Capitan still only requires 2 GB. My guess is we'll see a 4 GB minimum requirement this year or the next, but 8 should be a good way off.
I'm confident the next 4 years worth of OS X versions will run well on 8 GB.

Based on your usage, 8GB is fine.

hey guys,

sorry to keep harping on about this...

I'm thinking that upgrading to 16gb and possibly storage will take the 13" MBP up to a high price that is similar of the 15" base MBP and thinking, F-it i might go for the whole shabang and get the base 15" MBP. as it will give me more real estate which i would love, more processing power if needed, the crucial 16gb ram and double the SSD size compared to the base 13" MBP.

what do you guys think, and size and weight i know is a compromise, but I'm a big lad, so a little more weight aint gonna try me too much.

I got the MBP mostly for the 15 inch screen, but then my eyes aren't what they were 40 years ago.

For your relatively light usage I think you are pretty safe with 8 Gb ram, probably for some years.

If you can easily afford it, go for the 15 inch and 16 Gb. If it's a stretch financially, stick with the lower end and don't worry about it. It will be fine for 3-4 years at least and even then you can probably sell it for a decent fraction of the purchase price.

8gb is enough it seems for your needs. honestly, unless your macbook is not working, why not keep it until apple no longer supports it with OS updates?

I too have a 2010 MBP which I use for hulu and other streaming services. It still works great. I actually "replaced" it as my main machine with a 2013 MacBook Air when that was new. Both perform about the same. Only difference is portability.

If you are set on getting a new one then get 16gb. That is the real way to future proof. While you may not have needs for it, who knows what system requirements OS updates will have in the future.

This is exactly what I did. Order from b&h and avoid taxes

I'll say this, I need more horsepower for my DAW and other professional media applications, but for everything else, my 2013 MacBookAir is ALL I'll ever need. If you're not a power user, I say get a MacBookAir and call it a day.

I know some people pine for the retina display thing, but for me the non-retina display on my MBA is more than adequate, and the extended battery life is a BIG plus.

For heavy music and media use, I go to my classic MacPro, but the MBA is perfect for everything else.

thanks for the replies guys, i appreciate all the input. i think I'm going to bite the bullet and get the base macbook 15". I'm getting it on a buy now, pay later scheme so can test the water before i shell out so much money. i will report back when i get it, hopefully order in the next 4-7 days.

I could argue 4GB is enough for general tasks. Even more so with OS X IMHO.

The 13 inch MBP 2015 edition lasted longer then the MBA 2015 edition from reviews that I have seen. The retina display was worth the cost and only costed me around $1,200 for the base model with the 256GB SSD.

To be brutally honest I love my 17 inch windows laptop but the 13 inch MBP is plenty big in it's own right. The extra weight is noticeable if you carry it a lot imo and not worth it. specially in the base model if all you're doing is web browsing and word processing.
