What can't your current hardware do? It doesn't sound like you are a very demanding user so why upgrade. I use a 2015 MBA 11" and it still works great, I even run VM on it without problems.
I also have a 2015 11' MBA, with 8GB and the i7. Still screams along and does everything just fine.

I'm sure people will be saying the same thing about the M1 MBA when its 7 years old.

OK! Man - thank you all so much for all this! You've really helped me to see that £1200 isn't unreasonable, and that an upgraded M1 would be great too. So... it still leaves me with the dilemma of which option to go for! My main, number one concern is longevity (what is still going to be running nicely at a decent speed in ~7 years time) - I really don't mind at all about things looking out of date. I'm based in the UK so the prices are:
M2 (8GB, 256GB) = £1249 ($1523/€1491)
M1 (16GB, 256GB) = £1199 ($1461/€1431)
M1 (8GB, 512GB) = £1199 ($1461/€1431)
All similar price, but which of these would be the best overall laptop, with most long term potential?
p.s. Very sorry to be so annoying about all this, and basically ask you the same question (though slightly refined), as in my original post - this is genuinely my first time posting on any forum and I'm kind of amazed by so much helpful input
Get the 16GB/256GB M1. Should you work with larger files, perhaps 512GB. Any M1 Mac will treat you well for 7+ years.

My early 2021 8/8, 16/512GB MBA M1 is a great computer and i really like the design. It's the best all in all package i got so far and i will use it at least for the next 2 or 3 years.
Anyway, if i would have to buy now, i would buy the actual M2 MBA (16GB/1TB maybe). Otherwise i would regret in a few months, when the price is already forgotten.

M1 looks like a good buy in light that M2 will throttle when pushed, so yeah you getting a faster engine but when u stomp on the gas now they tell you can't go more than 5,000 rpm.

I don't think you need to worry about longevity, if you have to ask this question, I wager you are not power user who need to squeeze the last ounce out of your laptop. Am "surfer only" and to me my 2011 Air works just fine, $&^#% Apple will just starting to tell me the Apps I want to use need newer OS not available on a 2011, is the game they play to force you to buy new hardware.

This one: M1 (16GB, 256GB). You can use external storage / cloud if you need > 256gb.
M2 256 is not good due its slower disk speed.

You should ask people what they own before asking them for advice on what to buy. I see a lot of people loving their m1’s and standing by them. Good. But in a couple of years that design will be dated. And as an owner of both , there is no denying the better screen of the m2, the availability of mag safe , and the overall speed increase for precisely what you do, not to mention better battery life with the improved efficiency cores, makes the M2 the one you will wish you have in 3 years.

Wasn't for me, I came from an early 2015 MBP. I'm delighted with my M1 Air.

I hope you've had time to think on it and have decided already?

Looking for pretty much same options here. First I was going for M2, but then came all the SSD drama and I also wanted 16GB model. With upgrades M2 comes too expensive for my light use, so then I turned to that M1 16GB/256GB.

But it's also hard to pay full price for allmost 2 years old device, so here I'am still thinking 🙃

Honestly, the only M1 I, personally, would buy right now is a refurbished one. And I considered that route, but decided to go with the M2. MagSafe, the better display and camera, and a likely two extra years of Mac OS updates are, to me, worth the extra ~$200 or so I paid for my M2 than I would have paid for the same M1 configuration.

As for the "SSD issue," if your use truly is "light," I doubt you'd notice the difference in SSD. (I'm not saying that with any particular technical knowledge of my own, but am merely basing it on what I have read.)

Absolutely not, coming from your previous machine it will be by far the best computer you’ve ever owned.

Yeah, i'm pretty sure that base models SSD wouldn't be problem to me at least yet, but it's basically that feeling that you got worst speeds that in older model or you don't get that full performance out of that expensive machine. But another way around of course that M2 will give also that extra performance in other areas even with that slower SSD.

Here the difference with same specced M1/M2 is 300 €, but yeah, still better screen, magsafe, software support etc. might be worth it.

We don't really got any of those refurbished models here, only used ones that are usually out of warranty, so new is basically only option for me.

Don't know whether you wanted to know, but you were all so kind and helpful that I wanted to say - my 16GB/256GB M1 Air arrived today! I waited for a refurbished one, so it cost £1019/€1209/$1199 - and I'm so pleased with it! It's definitely the right option for my use/needs/budget. Thank you all for taking the time to send your advice

Awesome! Enjoy it!

16GB all the way!!! You made a fab decision! For all of us 16GB RAM posters it was worth the time helping you!
Great to see you are so happy with your decision.

One day Apple will offer 16GB RAM as standard .....sadly they can still get away with offering 8GB but it is only a matter of time. Then you can upgrade the SSD to a larger size with your next MB Air purchase!!

Might be a good idea also to look into considering Applecare + as notebooks can be unpredicatable and costly should something malfunction after your one year warrantee runs out.
