Nobody needs a luxury anything at any time. Do you need an Apple product? Poor people in Africa don't use apple products and they're fine. It's fun to have it if you or your parents have the money.

To the OP, I'd say get a black one. Those are amazing cars. Please post pics if you do. You will have the hottest car on campus.

Agreed. If you're going Range go Rover or Rover Sport only. Those LR models are not impressive at all.

Again can i remind you the OP started this thread five and a half years ago. Someone woke it up from the dead and it seem to have taken on a life of its own. Pointless giving advice to the Op who has undoubtably graduated a long time ago.

One doesn't have to be "wealthy" to drive a luxury SUV...

Leases on a Benz ML, BMW X5, etc aren't that expensive.

The ones that can afford the Cayenne/Macan and RR/RRS are actually "wealthy" because Land Rover's credit requirements for those cars are several tiers above BMW/Mercedes/Audi/Lexus.

Yes because a kid in college with 100k in student loads can afford a lease on a luxury SUV.

Anyways, I guess my viewpoint on this issue will always be different from yours. I went to a $$$ private university in Boston and live here now. Driving a BMW/Audi/Benz in college was considered normal.

10 out of every 12 cars I see on the streets here are German luxury brands.

The vast majority of kids at expensive private colleges aren't taking out loans to go to school.

Ok for those born with golden spoons in their mouths sure go nuts.

But in general does a freshman in college need anything other than a **** box car.

Again it depends on money. If you're "born with a golden spoon go nuts." Otherwise, there's Honda for the rest of the college crowd.

They're not necessarily leasing it. It depends on the family and how much money they have. My parents paid cash for my luxury car in college. I was born very rich.
