Is a refurbished MBP 17" good or bad idea?

The 17" carries a premium over the 15" - always has.

I, for one, happily pay that premium. Installed 16GB of DDR3-1600Mhz and a 250GB SSD, added a Thunderbolt external enclosure, and I'm *very* happy with the system.

I think that's why many don't understand the 17" - there is a level of work where the price is not the issue - the quality and capability is worth whatever price you pay. My BTO system was over $3k new - and worth every penny!

Totally agree. The combination screen real estate + screen size is in a game of its own and can't be compared, or even quantified with what the 15" rmbp has. The 15" rmbp will always remain a 15" even if it has the same resolution.

For users who spend time / do work in their computer for 90% of the day and who require screen real estate, staring at a 15" monitor is just plain suicide. An external monitor solution is nice, but for some of us, we'd want to have the on-the-go big screen perks, anywhere, anytime.

You guys are really pushing me to get that 2.4ghz refurb!!!! AGGHHH :D :D

I really love our 17" MBP community here lately, there is some fine solidarity happening and great discussions.

Thank you.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Been a lurker here for a few years now, but it's just now that a lot of 17" users are taking their stand. Gotta love that!!

Got the 17" for just around 1700$ with 16gb 1600 memory and speck case plus the card reader that goes into the xpress slot. So I guess not to bad deal afer all. Given that next year me and wife are going to US to visit friends.

I have warranty till the end of October but now I'm after applecare plan - anyone knows of some good deals on that - can be from the US shop.

And what SSD should I put in it ? 120 or 240 GB ?

Cheerio.

Grats! Where'd you get yours, if I may ask? :)

2nd hand market in ireland/uk but it more or less is the same price as the refurb from apple us online store as i had to spend cash on ssd and storage

My only pain in the ass will be apple care now. Which will brong my total to my limit of 2300-2400$ for the lot.

Some will say I couldve gotten rmbp for that monies or even new cmbp but i alway planned on getting new ssd and storage. Screen is big. So what do I care :D I can live on this one till our trip to US next year.

And yes, get yourself the refurb 17" :)

Will 16gb be enough for video editing ?

You won't get more than 16GB in an Apple notebook. I don't care if it says up to 32 works somewhere. It works on systems that take 4 x 8GB sodimm configurations. 8 is the bare minimum anyone would want for that today. Depending on resolution, number of layers/nodes, etc., 16GB could be feel quite comfortable or just adequate.

I never said that 17" is a slouch. I just said its slower so I would not recommend paying more for it than for a faster, lighter rMBP. Besides, I wonder why you say you can do more coding on the 17"? The real screen estate is the same, the keyboard size is the same, and the 15" is much lighter to carry around so you can do you work on the go more easily :p

CPU speed between the two is close enough. If one isn't enough, the other won't last very long. GPU is slower.

Except the 17" has 6770m which Im not sure how compares to 650m.

This choosing is driving me CRAZZZZEEEY.... :D

The 6770m is slower. It is an older architecture. If they go back to AMD, the update could be significant over the 6770m.
