When I got my Series 5 at launch after having the Series 4, I noticed decreased battery life. However about a week later after use or an update, I noticed the battery life improved and was about the same as the Series 4. The app that decreases battery life for me is the noise app. I love the AOD feature. I like being to look at the watch without moving it to see the time and the complications I have on the face.

Hey!

Apple Watch SE is rumored to be annouced at the tuesday event and will probably be without Always On Display, as it is a internal upgrade from AW 4.

I am buying a new Apple Watch for the first time.. So, I'm curious. Is it worth buying the new AW6 for the Always on display? Battery life is an important aspect of course.

Is it worth buying the newer version because of the always on display?
For me it is. There were times when the screen on the series 3 would turn on 1/2 sec It always bugged me. The 5 spaces that for me.

Ha! You’d also think that all butterfly keyboards end up sticking, all MacBook screens delaminate, all iPads end up with light bleed etc. You know how forums are. Someone starts a gripe thread and everyone with that gripe is attracted to it. Those that don’t have that problem don’t bother. I didn’t know it was “a common point” at all. Based on my experience, you all are crazy. And you know what? Just like delaminating screens and light bleed, you guys are a significant minority. Emphasis on minority.

What this boils down to is this, you can’t convince someone who doesn’t have battery issues with their watch, that their watch has a battery issue.
I didn’t say it was a ‘battery issue’, I said a screen that is always on will naturally consume more battery than one that isn’t. My battery on two Apple watches used to end the day on less than 40%. Now I have turned AOD off, my battery has around 70% at the end of the day. How much battery should I be seeing if you’re telling me my watch ‘sucks’? Genuine question and unlike yourself I’m not getting personal about this.

Ive turned AOD back on on my watch today to see how much battery it uses. I will post a picture here and if the general consensus is my watch is faulty yet again, i’ll contact Apple for another replacement.

So as I promised I have worn my watch all day for 15 1/2 hours with AOD turned on. I went on a 38 minute run this mornings soon as I got up and when I got back it had used 4% (96% battery left). At 10:53am, 4 hours after the run the battery was reading 84%.

This time last night my watch had 71% battery when I placed it in the charger and AOD had been turned off. Tonight it has 36%!!! I get up at 6:10am every morning and take it off at 10pm.

Can someone explain to me if AOD doesn’t drain any battery at all like some here have claimed, why my watch is losing so much battery with it turned on? My original AW bought in October 2019 drained exactly the same. This one was replaced in March. Both watches ended the day in the 30’s. My wife’s S4 tonight has 68%.

Am I entitled to replacement number 2??

I’m still trying to see where the problem is. Why do you want to end the day at 70%? What’s it matter if it’s at 36? That’s still not hitting low power mode. It charges quickly.

It’s not a problem as I charge every night anyway (as previously stated), but I’ve been told that AOD makes no difference to battery life and in my case it does. So can somebody explain why I’m losing 30% of my battery just with AOD activated? Are others not having this level of usage??? I’m asking genuine questions and seeking help here.

Post your usage stats.

I have the same issue too. I had to turn off the AOD as was draining my baterry. Finishing the day with 35% now it does with a 66%.

Where are they located?

On iPhone: Watch app > General > Usage.
On Watch: Settings > General > Usage. I’m at 58%. I won’t charge until tonight 2hrs before I go to bed. According to my battery prediction app I’m good for the day.

No one can tell you what’s up with your watch since everyone has different apps and settings.

I used to complain about Series 5 battery life until I went back to the Series 3 & 4. I used to think the Series 5 had a battery issue cuz I ended up at 20% every night if I ran for an hour. I tried turning off the AOD but it didn’t make a difference. So I went back to my Series 3 Edition Ceramic for a week. But my battery life was the same in the Series 3, I still ended up at 20% or worse. I still didn’t believe it so I swapped watches with my wife who has a Series 4. Again, same story. I had about the same battery life every night.

With the same apps and settings the Series 3,4, and 5 were all the same. I then unpaired the watch and re-did as new and added back NO APPS. My battery life shot up spectacularly. I then added back my apps one at a time. I found that one app in particular killed my battery. I’m not going to mention it because they’ve since corrected the app and the developer is on here.

I don’t think you necessarily need a new watch since it very well could be an app problem. But apps change. Just because an app is or isn’t an issue today. Doesn’t mean it will or won’t be an issue next month.

Sooo, I’m no help for you. Except to say, after all my research, I’m no longer a Series 5 complainer.

I’ve got a lot of apps on my watch that I’ve never used so i’ll delete them off and keep an eye on it. I’m not complaining as such, just curious after I was tackled here by a couple of people. Whether it’s an app draining my battery or not, right now AOD does make a significant difference on my watch. For this to have been a similar pattern on both my series 5’s, it must be a rogue setting or app on both.

Another user above has admitted the same issue and has a similar use pattern to me.

I have the same issue too. I had to turn off the AOD as was draining my baterry. Finishing the day with 35% now it does with a 66%.

At 70% at end of day this means theoretically you should get 2 days of life out of the battery vs 1 day of battery life. This prolongs battery health in most cases. However this is mostly a mute point when you consider most replace the watch with an upgrade in 1-2 years.

I’ve experienced the same drain with AOD. With AOD on I see about 3-5% an hour drain, and with it off it’s about 1-3% an hour.

I guess. But In a live situation I don’t still don’t see this asa problem. Maybe when I’m not charging everything else I own daily getting two days out of it will matter to me.

That’s a lot of drain. I’ve been off the charger an hour and haven’t lost any battery life yet. But when I had problems my standby time and usage numbers were the same. I could literally watch the numbers tick down.

with that said, I have seen AOD numbers improve in the beta of WatchOS 7. I anticipate seeing the numbers improve over time.

I just wish there had been some warning. I didn’t know that the battery needed time to settle. I really thought my watch was a dud. I knew there was no way usage and standby time could possibly be the same even with all the major features turned off. Now I have noise and AOD on and I don’t have any problems with drain. Had I known this was a possibility I wouldn’t have worried so much. Now I warn newbies about the possibility.

That’s good news about watchOS! All improvements are welcome!!!

For a device marketed and sold as a watch, I’d argue that an always on display should be a requirement. It is clearly such a desirable feature that Apple purposefully disabled it on the SE to keep it as one of the few features they think it’s worth paying a premium for. I would have been fine if they had limited the AOD on the SE to time only, no complications, no workout apps, etc.

I’ve had a series 0 and a series 3, and while raise to wake works well 90% of the time, the 10% of the time it doesn’t work really sucks. In those instances I often find I have to raise my wrist multiple times to get it to work, or really exaggerate the raise motion. Either way it’s annoying, because any time I look at my watch and it’s not telling the time, it has failed in its purpose as a watch.

All that being said, I opted for an SE over a 6. The price difference, especially after trading in my 3, was considerable, and since I don’t care one whit about even more measurements, that meant paying a significant premium just for an AOD (and a blue case). I just wish Apple would offer some kind of compromise between no AOD and their full implementation of an AOD.

This is the number one factor for me. I have had a series three since launch, and it looks like I am going another year. The entyr level watch is now only $100 less than the stainless that I bought. I am still at about 50% battery at the end of the day. Back when I got it it was around 70%. I can't imagine what my battery degradation would look like if I was coming home with 30% life or less every day for three years.

It’s worth it for me.

I did recently make a feature suggestion to Apple though via their feedback app.

When you are in an Apple Watch app say Spotify for example and the screen dims it displays the time only in the top right corner, rather than your full chosen Watch face and complications.

I’d love to be able to seiect this as my default always on display.

Gives me the key info I need (the time), good for battery life and also for privacy too.

just do the infograph modular with no complications at alll

I know this is an old post, but upgrading from AW4 to AW7 was totally worth it for me. One of the reasons being the always-on display, which is a whole lot more convenient than having to always raise your wrist to see the display.

I hope Apple have sorted out the battery degradation for the series 7 compared to the series 5. My S5 was brilliant for the first year I had it but the AOD has ruined the battery with nearly 20% health lost in just 2 years. I have no choice now but to disable it to get it through the day and with it disabled, I end the day on about 40%. With it on, the Watch dies by 19.30-20.00. It’s annoying as I’ve found the AOD useful.

Hard to say, but after 6 months my AW7’s battery health is still at 100%. With AOD on I’m typically at around 45-50% by 7pm after cca. 12h use. Btw, usually I take it off the charger around 10-11pm the previous night and just let it stay on my night stand before putting it on my wrist in the morning, so basically that’s almost 1 whole day off the charger.
