Apple invested a lot of time into the iPad.
Apple invested a lot of time into iOS.
Apple has an OS that doesn't suck. That
doesn't make them novel (unix); but it does mean
their OS isn't Windows (duct tape and popsicle sticks).
Apple doesn't have massive enterprise accounts like
HP/Dell/IBM. They market straight to a consumer.
Hence, they had to find a way to make impressions
at the consumer level to convert Windows PC users to Mac.
First they introduced the iPOD in order to re-shape their
brand identity. This allowed them to release products
such as the iPhone and now the iPad. Products like
the iPhone and iPad are specifically designed to convert
customers to Mac desktops/laptops. I am sure you are aware
of the "works out of the box" marketing of Macintosh computers.
Apple
has to make smart phones and tablets that are second to none
in order for their business model to work.
iPad is the market leader. You compete with a market leader by releasing
the same product; cheaper or by offering something novel (different or better) enough yet
similar enough to detract customers.
Amazon and Barnes and Noble were market leaders with Kindle and Nook.
Clearly, they didn't know what they had; so they trashed their uniqueness (ereader is an ereader) by screwing up their line with the "Fire" and "Color".
Both of these products were cobbled together, over night, with very little foresight. Frankly, I don't understand how two businesses, that large, could make such a horrible mistake. But they did. I'll cut them some slack; when it comes to tech/software; tech/software companies as much as companies who enter tech/software simply don't operate with much
business sense!
If you want a tablet that works, get an iPad.
Everything else out there are just rush-jobs that are more embarrassing
than operational.
Unfortunately, Apple is just one of the few tech companies you can rely on for common sense, I'm afraid.
