Not in my opinion. I've tried the Moshi anti-glare film, and while it does its job, it is not nearly as good as a matte LCD panel. I'm sure that all the films are basically the same.

I forgot to add that I 100% agree. Before the 15" AG uMBP came out I bought the standard uMBP and purchased a film. I was so use to the Classic MBP that I couldn't handle the glassy screen. As soon as I saw the AG uMBP in the store I was sold, it is much better than the film, IMO..

Ive only seen the Matte-option once (SF store) - usually it's BTO only, but *I will get matte* (FWIW AG is a misnomer). On a 2000 dollar laptop, 50usd for the part you will be staring at all the time is money well spent.

Matte/ AG films on top of the glossy do not give the same result.

I wrote a fairly comprehensive treatise on this in another thread (entitled 'would this work' or something like that).

Having said that *most* people are happy with Glossy. *Most* people are also happy listening to Taylor Swift... *

*actually my brothers are. Heck, she has some catchy tunes. Right, I'll change that to "most people are happy listening to Black Eyed Peas 'I got a feeling'" a travesty against music, which I have no qualms expressing my opinion about, much to the chagrin of the great unwashed :)P)
YMMV

Matte.

I had a unibody with glossy, gave it to my son, and bought a used penryn MBP (last version before the unibody) with a matte screen. I much prefer the matte.

I just wanted to come in here and say that the matte version of the MacBook Pro's screen is going to be wobbly and wiggle a lot. This is because the matte MacBook Pro's hinge is attached to a thin aluminum bezel which bends a bit and the glossy MacBook Pro's hinge is attached to a piece of glass which is going to be way more sturdy. I've compared them at the Apple Store and the matte version had a lot of play in the hinge because of the aluminum bezel bending as you open and close it.

I have a glossy MacBook Pro and it's the most solid hinge I've ever seen in a laptop... it's so tight and doesn't wobble around as I move.

Just something to think about.

Found a video on YouTube opening a MacBook Pro with a matte screen. Watch at 2:10 as he opens the lid and lets go... the screen wiggles. On a glass screen, it wouldn't do that. I'm personally bothered by wobbling screens... that's part of the reason I went with glass on my MacBook Pro and Apple Cinema Display on my Mac Pro. Anyways.. here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx23N6qFqRg

I've never come across anyone who regretted getting the matte screen.
I have come across people who regretted getting the glossy screen.
When in doubt, go matte. ;)

I have had a matte Apple notebook and now I have a glossy. I have a matte Cinema Display also. I like the look of matte, and I was hesitant about getting a glossy screen. I decided to try glossy, and I like it better especially when I'm in a dark room. I can see reflections in the screen sometimes, but it doesn't bother me at all like I thought it would. The increased contrast makes up for it.

I have the glossy screen and i like it alot. Don't know about you but the I-visor anti glare film doesnt look bad at all. You can make the glossy anti glare, u cant make the anti-glare glossy
:p

Lets examine your situation.

Where do you use it?

If you don't travel much with it, have a widow behind you where you would use it, just go with the glassy version, or plan on working outside, or anyone very light, go with the anti-glare version. I would probably recommend it anyways. I have the normal version, but I wish I had the anti-glare version, it can be very annoying sometimes.

i hate the f'n glass glossy screen. every time i get that reflection i feel like kicking jobs right in the nuts! i'd paid $50 to get rid of that garbage if i could.../rant

I think the $50 premium is quite ridiculous, as it seems they are just using the same screens from the old aluminum body MBP's. but I guess it would definitely affect production costs.

I had the matte screen in my old MBP, and would definitely get it again when they come out with the new model.

I really wish the inside would have been black though, instead of silver... it kinda looks goofy. 50$ well spent? Definitely.

...I think it should be a CTO option but to charge $50 for it when you are already paying the "apple" price for these machines is just adding insult to injury = no I don't think the price is worth it but the option is...

I also want to ask the same question, I am going to be buying a MBP for college soon (update), and I am wondering if it is necessary or a luxury.

usually the MBP's are update in the 1Q so maybe they'll release make the matte an option that you don't have to pay for. and hopefully they can put a black bezel on the matte.... the silver does look kind of goofy.

I have the glossy screen on my MBP and I'm quite happy with it. However, I have read that the matte screen not being a piece of glass is lighter than the glossy screen and by going with the matte screen you shave half a pound off the weight on a 15" MBP. Does anyone know if that is in fact true?

It's common sense. The matte screen isn't glass.

In hear a lot of people say that they prefer matte because they need accurate colour, but is anyone really doing colour correction on a laptop screen?!

Matte Screen is Actually a $700 option if you really think about it

I am reminded why I bought it though when we joke about the fact that I keep my brightness at 1 little bar vs. my co-workers and friends who keep their glossy screens all the way up to see it in the light. :D
Among many other things, that's one reason I love matte also.

To answer the first question. I don't like the fact that it cost more. But I'll pay for it up to a certain price that I feel is reasonable.. obviously if they charged $200 or more to get the screen, It would make me think twice. But $50-100 is a small price to pay for the benefits you get in my opinion. But this is only if you were originally in the market for a 15-17" notebook.

The real issue I have is that they don't offer it at all on the 13". So in a sense, apple is charging about a $700 premium to get a matte screen if you think about it.. people that would otherwise be happy with a 13" antiglare model (which doesn't exist) are "forced" to at least get the base 15" model to have the matte option.. so it's a $700 decision for those who would normally be happy with the 13" model

Edit: I like the silver bezel by the way. I hope they don't change that

I will probably go for matte myself. That isn't to say I mind glossy but if I'm working in a bright area, I would prefer no glare.

is it worth the extra $50 on the MBP to get the anti glare screen. i know it has a lot to do with personal preference.... but just wanted some opinions. I do a TON of photo editing so off the bat i tend to lean towards to anti glare/matte screen but wanted to see what people thought or had experienced with either

Absolutely worth every penny.

If the new MBP's do not initially come with an antiglare option, I'll start a thread entitled, "The unofficial "I'm Waiting for Antiglare" thread..."
