Interesting. I'd be more concerned about breaking the first generation than the 3G.

To each their own I guess.

I bought this first-generation iPhone used a short time ago - it came to me already very beaten up with many scratches and dents, which was the point. If it were pristine, as the first-generation 8GB iPhone I sold to buy the 3G was, I'd be too afraid to use it for snowboarding. I have no such worries given its current condition.

Yes, I'm going to keep mine, but upgrade to 3.0. I only bought it in January this year on an 18 month contract, so that will bring me very nicely into a new one in summer 2010.

The real question is will AT&T still let current iPhone owners (2G & 3G) let them upgrade to the new phone despite how long they've owned it.

I'm rather interested in this because I just currently went back to the iPhone with a 2G unit last month. Do you think this will make me eligible to upgrade to the new one that comes out in June/July?

That's not the question, you can upgrade to whatever mythical phone may be coming out, the real question is how much you'll pay for it. I have a very hard time believing that AT&T will give the rainbow/unicorn phone to 3G users at a subsidized price; we already got a new phone with a discount. 2G owners likely will get this discount because they A) probably didn't purchase a 3G, and B) their contracts are up this summer for those who bought launch day.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do either. I bought my 3G on launch day and am not supposed to get the subsidized price on a new phone until December 12th. Not knowing about the new phone's features or cost makes it tough to decide. If it's the same form factor with 3mp camera and a digital compass I'll probably wait until December but if it has a 3mp camera with a good lens and is slimmer I might jump when it's available assuming its June or July. If it's a couple months later I might as well wait.

The compass doesn't seem like a handy feature unless there's a turn by turn navigation app to go along with it.

The best case scenario I can see would be they offer to let you trade it in for $100 - $150 off a new phone.

If they bump up battery life, processor speed, RAM, improve the camera (auto-focus, more features, better lens, and maybe just bump it up to 3.2 megapixels [that's at the bottom of my list, though]), and still offer the $399 price for ineligible AT&T subscribers, but the $399 iPhone is the 16GB iPhone (I see them dropping 8GB and going to 16GB and 32GB) I'll give my 3G to my mom and buy the 3rd gen.

I'd also like brushed aluminum instead of chrome, a matte back, and crisper, clearer, and louder speakers but I'd still buy the 3rd gen. without these.

The sole reason that I will buy the new iPhone is for development purposes. If I was not developing for it, there is no way that I would buy a new one. This is due to the fact that I am super cheap!

Well... it will be nice to have more battery time:)

dude...if the new iphone is as slim as the touch, I am all in. However, if no physical changes, not even worth it. even if the new one is faster, I am cool with the speed of the 3G....

I plan on keeping mine, most deff. Its always good to have a backup phone, and to have a phone for VOIP && a phone for development..

i'm not too sure, but didn't att said they're considering lowering the data plan by 10 bucks for the new iphone? if it's only for the new iphone, then i think i'll cancel my plan, sell my 3G, and get the new iphone. if that 10 bucks applies to my current plan, then i'm sticking with my 3G.

If I decide to buy I will kept it just like I did my first one. I really don't see the point of selling. You never know when you may need it. Although I could open up a small apple store with all the iphones and ipod I have. :D

Here's my deal: I have the 2-year plan on my 3G and I've had it since Christmas of '08, December 15th to be exact, so RIGHT before my warranty is up I'm going to fake an excuse for a free new one, keep that in great condition until the newest NEWEST iPhone comes out (2010, not this new model supposedly to be released in June/July)

Simpler terms: Keep 3G for this upcoming iPhone, but wait until the 2010 model is released. I'm wierd;)

Know what I mean, guys? Stand my ground for this release because it's crazy expensive to upgrade to the latest and greatest, so I'm going to wait my 2 years. And, hopefully be one of those guys that waits in line for hours the :apple: store.

You can thrash me if you want, I know that was hard to follow :/

I'm considering getting one if it does come out. I'll be selling my 3G to help pay for it though. I don't have any use for it other than looking at it, and the money would be nice. But I'm going to be picky about the new one. I want a longer battery life and a better camera. I'd also like an aluminum option for the back, I love the look of my white iPhone, but I also love how the aluminum on my iMac and MacBook look and if the phone matched it would be great :) Sometimes I wish I had one of the 2G iPhones cause the area I live in doesn't even have a 3G network and it's extremely rare that I go anywhere with a 3G network, but I haven't been able to find anyone that has one in decent enough condition that would want to trade with me.

I'm definitely going to keep my 3G. I don't think there is anything that is going to blow me away enough to get the new one. If the main difference is video recording (or better camera), I can deal with not having it. More RAM would be nice, but would not cause me to buy a new phone at full price. It seems, anyways, that firmware 3.0 is going to be optimized for the current 3G hardware. That said, if I was offered some kind of discount for the new iPhone (like if I trade in my current 3G), I probably would purchase the new one.

My wife wanted an iPhone after she used mine, so now I am waiting for the new iPhone release and get her one. No way that I'll be selling of this iPhone 3G cos it's just too much fun.

So RIGHT before my warranty is up I'm going to fake an excuse for a free new one ... :/
And how exactly do you plan to do that? Dunk it in the nearest urinal, throw it down a flight of stairs, plug 220V into the headphone jack?

I will be keeping my 3G... considering I'm unemployed now. and I always keep everything (sometimes even after it's broken) so selling it to pay for the new one is out of the question.

I still have the first generation iPhone, and the only way Apple can make me think about upgrading is if the new iPhone has an AMOLED display.

I'm keeping my 3G because I don't want to pay the absurd $600 price or whatever it will be to buy one while still in a contract.

I'm actually hoping that by the time my contract on the 3G is over, there will be some information on Apple getting out of the exclusive contract with AT&T so that Verizon can get a CDMA version (or whatever 4G or ??? they'll have) to work with an iPhone. AT&T is the only part of the iPhone I absolutely detest and that would be the one reason I'd upgrade prematurely.

I have no desire or plans to "upgrade" my iphone if apple upgrades it. I cannot imagine any type of upgrades that would cause me to be tempted. All in all, I'm pretty content and satisfied with my iPhone. I am looking forward to the new OS and eagerly wait for that arrival.
