This is silly. Siri makes an obviously colloquial reply, and sure enough if you specifically request a google or wolfram search, you will either get articles about this debacle or wolframs mobile phone rankings which now has an LG phone up top.

There were already a bunch of casual responses where Siri was praising apples stuff and no one seemed to mind. This one specific phrasing is only getting attention because it did make apple look silly. Lament the loss of a good joke and move on. Slippery slope arguments are considered a logical fallacy for a reason.

I can see what you are saying about the censorship and that may be an issue at some point.

Some point is now apparently.

Now it's a problem.

Just like I don't allow smoking in my house or car. My place, my choice.

My phone? Oh right.. Maybe not.

(DISCLAIMER: I do actually like Apple and love my iPhone.)

Not really

It's one thing to censor things that Apple doesn't like such as opinion of phones and jail breaking, but where does it stop. Yes, I think it's a problem.

It was inadvertent and they're no longer censored.

People jumping the gun as usual.

Yes maybe they need to refine where exactly they are censoring Jailbreak.

But this again is apple's decision. They want to censor something that they think people shouldn't be doing with their phones. Just like they won't work on a jailbroken phone.

Just like saying "hey you can smoke, just don't do it in my car" (maybe a good analogy? lol)

I realize it's a relatively benign question with subjective answers, but does anyone else feel like this sets a bad precedent? I'm not a fan of the whole "if you don’t like it, censor it" approach that was taken.

(If you're not familiar with this story, I'm referring to this)

Not suprised at all. That is Apple knowing what is best for their customers. lol

That's not the same at all. It would be more like you built the car, sold it to somebody and still said they can't smoke in the car.

"Censorship" isn't an issue here, Apple is a private company, they can do what they want. If there was a mistake in the google search algorithm that put yahoo as the best search engine you bet your ass they'd fix it.

[Edit] One could also argue that the original response was flawed given that there's no evidence that phone x is the "best" smartphone.

It actually offers a very neutral list of pages to that question.

Typed in what is the best search engine and it simply lead me to sites reviewing various ones.

Interestingly enough dogpile.com was one of the first hits!

unemployment, death, taxes my mortgage today's gas prices cost of insurance. the education system the cost of things all bother me. Along with what to eat for dinner. Not what Siri thinks the best smart phone is.

I'm so disappointed with Siri. It's nothing more than TTS-fied same that came out 20~30 years ago. There's no 'brain' behind Siri. Just pre-inputed responses.

She should have continued to report the Windows Phone 7 product as the best smartphone but return it an an audible response (rather than the web page from wolfram alpha)

...then a slight pause

...Then break out in hysterical laughter and say...Just kidding :p

You can bet that when we have sentient AI (brains), the smartphone isn't where we are going to first see it.

I'd be willing to counter bet that. A cloud based AI (what Siri emulates) would be well suited for mobile devices. We are talking first in consumers product though, right? Though I wouldn't want to be testing first/second/third gen AI on anything that is critical.

No cause I have better things to think about than what a computerized voice on my phone has to tell or suggest to me.

I asked Siri "Who makes the best smart phone"

And the reply was "Who would you like to call?" !

:D

...better things like spending your time posting opinions on an internet forum?

Um don't you mean changed back? When I bought my 4s last year, it gave this exact response when I asked it that. It never told me anything else besides the iPhone. I'm more shocked that, for a short while, it actually said something different.

Then why aren't you in an HIV research lab, giving a meal to a homeless person, or lobbying your Congressman on income inequality instead of posting here?

Maybe for the same reason that you haven't returned your iPhone on principle, and developed your own mobile device with a software platform that is free of any and all carrier and vendor influences.

After all, if briantaylor619's opinions are invalid because he doesn't decisively act on them, what does that say about your stance on Apple's "censorship" if you're unwilling to act just as decisively?

I don't really like it, but they are constantly doing much worse examples to be blunt.

Phazer

What a quirky little thing to worry about! It's called marketing!
