In general, everytime someone types "LOL" (caps or not), I imagine some solitary twerp cackling maniacally to himself. When I see "ROFL", I get a vision of some truly deranged person seriously in need of a straitjacket. I think the world would be a better place if there were some legal enforcement of these acronyms-- that is, one would be subject to fine and/or imprisonment for typing one of these without actually being engaged in the act described. Then you might actually see more usage of MA (Mildly Amused), CS (Chuckling Slightly), or WIHBDCWRT (Wish I Hadn't Been Drinking Coke While Reading That).

Yes, I am very ticked off by the "LOL" and the dictionary on my phone has not learned to say "lol" yet. Although I do click the "x" every time.

People say LOL too much. Most people say LOL even though they aren't laughing out loud. It is used more out of habit than anything else.

I was hoping this thread was about being ticked off at the USE of lol. Because I am! I CAN'T STAND all those abbreviations! In all of my text messages, emails, and forum posts, I always use full sentences, and correct English. I just don't understand why people think its "cool" to use those stupid abbreviations.

So you would actually type "Oh my God, what the f***, I'm laughing out loud!" LOL, that's silly.

People type "lol" to make sure that the person they're talking to doesn't think they are angry or serious. If you say "I'm not sure i'll be able to meet you at 2:00 cause the plane doesn't land until 1:45" it could sound cold or harsh, and you might be afraid that the person will think you're being too blunt with them. If you say "I'm not sure i'll be able to meet you at 2:00 cause the plane doesn't land until 1:45, lol" it conveys a much more friendly mood.

It's a psychological thing, because when you aren't seeing or hearing the person that you're talking to, your own mind generally fabricates the mood in which they are telling you whatever it is that they're telling you, because you have nothing else to draw on. All you see is the text. So saying "lol" let's the person know that you aren't angry, pretty much.

Which is why you should talk to people, instead of texting them. (notice the no "lol" because I am being serious)

Everytime I type in lol in a text, autocorrect switches is to LOL.

(it's pretty funny actually)

I just don't think I'm yelling at them!

APPLE! FIX THIS!

:)

hahaha YES it used to bug the crap out of me. the dictionary has a lot of completely random acronyms that it suggests instead of a useful word.

That may be true on the whole but sometimes it is easier to text someone quickly then having to call them when you just want to convey something very short.

However, I never say LOL. I never got into the habit of it so I'm not so sure I agree with the analysis that it is used to convey mood. I always thought it was when you thought something was funny. I use haha which tried to change to haga but eventually it learned that i say haha when i want to convey to the other person what they said was funny and not haga.
