With the passcode set and preview turned off, it still says "Text Message" and the person's name it's from. So it doesn't make it totally private, but it will at least hide the message that way.

If she has the passcode lock on, the just go to Settings->General->Passcode Lock: and set Show SMS Preview to OFF. It will no longer display SMS previews if the phone is asleep.

As for the setting itself, I agree that the Preview SMS setting should be in its own SMS settings section so that it didn't matter if a passcode was set or not.

thanks for this, was exactly what she was looking for.

And I agree that i hope this is addressed. I don't want to put passcode on, but want to disable this feature.

JSW - thanks for merging, I didn't see this post

I mean, it's crazy. If I set my iPhone down on a table, and I'm with company, and I get a new text message, everyone can see! It might as well just read the text message out for everyone!

Get your mistress to email rather than texting? Keep iPhone in your pocket? :D

My 14 year old niece is the only one who texts me right now and she obviously doesn't say anything naughty. I can see how this feature could lead to embarrassment for some, but luckily I don't have to worry about that at this point.

Using pass-lock for this should not be necessary. This is a bad feature on Apple's part. There should be a setting you can turn on that just says you have a text message and not show the message itself. I've switched a few friends to an iPhone who complain about the same situation and I don't blame them.

I believe Apple knows of this flaw and there will be a setting soon enough to not show the contents of the text.

I think almost no one likes that feature.

I like it....I agree you should be able to turn it off, with out setting a passcode, but I like seeing the text, and if its important I'll answer, if it, I can ignore it

Don't most phones do this now?

I'm certain that Sony Ericsson's do this, when you recieve a msg the task manager thing comes up with who the message is from and a preview, and I don't remember being able to turn that off (and happens when its locked also).

I guess it kind of sucks if you're having some sort of illicit affair but then again that's not really Apple's prerogative.

Wow. I'm glad I have friends who don't give a damn what text message pops up on my phone. They probably wouldn't even look at the phone when it popped up. While I can KIND OF see wanting a option for preview off, I find it silly that it is THAT big of a deal to some people. Get new friends...it's much easier that way.
