...cleaning up the house especially just before the cleaner comes?

I'm at my girlfriend's house and her mum insists on cleaning everywhere up before the cleaner arrives. I know of several people's parents doing this and think its the daftest thing ever!!

It always interesting to see how the 'other-half' live! ;)

No, our place is so tiny we do it ourselves. With both of us at it, we can clean the entire place in about three hours.

Well, I plead guilty.

Our house is rather big, and we indulge in the luxury of having a cleaner (and thus, more free time during the week-end!).

But yes, we do tidy up before she comes, for several reasons:
- she'll be more efficient if she doesn't have to waste time ordering our stuff, moving our piles here and there,
- she won't put some important papers/items somewhere where we won't find them ever again.

Additionally, we might agree on the point we're lazy (i.e., ready to pay for somebody else to do the job), we do not want to pass for dirty (i.e., not knowing how to do the minimum). At least on the day she comes :D

But the real problem here... Does the mother of your girlfriend want you to help pre-clean the house ? :p

No. But I do get the butler to do a bit of cleaning in the kitchen before the cleaner gets here as my chef leaves it in such a bad state.

I know someone who binge cleans. God knows what their place is like normally but when they know I'm coming round they'll clean for days before hand. Of course they're quite dirrty.

They must feel like they've wasted their time though 'cause I turn up, leave empty bottles strewn about the place, mess up their sheets, spend ages in their shower using all their hot water then bugger off again leaving them to clear up!

I'm the one who cleans the pubes off the bathroom floor and the crumbs off the kitchen counter. My other half does not know what cleaning is.

What about the crumbs in the bathroom and pubes on the kitchen counter?

It's the opposite in our place. I do clean but only when I've been prompted to notice something. However, if something DIYish is annoying me, I'm first out with the drill and screwdrivers.

To his credit, I am pretty retentive about things. Since I work at home, I can't concentrate if the rest of the place is a wreck, so I usually end up vacuuming a few times a week, hitting the floors with the mop at the same time....etc.

iGary enters bathroom in maids outfit and rubber gloves to complete daily chores.
"Hmm pubes"
*wipes up in tissue and discards*
**returns to shouting at technology**

dynamicv enters bathroom, creating a quarter circle of clean tiles snow-angel like with the door in the covering of pubic hair on the floor.
"Oh something's blocking the plug hole"
*gets out tools*
**attends to plumbing**

Yes I usually pick up before the maid comes.

uh, this might be inappropriate, but how much do you pay a cleaner/maid?

not that i will ever be able to afford one, I'm just curious.

We used to have one for our two-bedroom place and it was $60. That was when we weren't po.

I find that a small flat is more difficult to keep tidy as there isn't enough space for everything, so I'm forever moving stuff around. I don't have a cleaner but could certainly do with one.

Now *that's* multitasking ;)

You made my morning -- thanks. :p

I don't clean much.

Do have to keep after the guano, though.

Uh, for the sake of curiosity then... €10/h, plus transportation to/from her place (i.e. a tram-card). Which ends up like €40 for 4 hours to clean up the whole house, and iron some clothes.

* Arnaud sighes, considering he's talking about house-cleaning on a mac forum. Arnaud also remembers posting on parenting this morning, and about baking stuffed mushrooms yesterday. Isn't life great :D *
