Oh MAN I was HOPING someone would start a thread on this very issue. I'm ready to hire a cleaner, but was undecided on how to proceed.
Could someone start a few on MY most pressing questions: "Does anyone here NOT pick up their toenails after clipping them in the living room?" and maybe "Have you ever purchased a loaf of bread based solely on the shape of the crust?"

I find that a small flat is more difficult to keep tidy as there isn't enough space for everything, so I'm forever moving stuff around. I don't have a cleaner but could certainly do with one.

Now *that's* multitasking ;)
That's the good side of a small flat. Just attach J-cloths to your feet and the motion does the rest :p

And no, that doesn't mean my ceiling's spotless :D

It's not pubic hair. You forget I live with a yeti. He moults more than the dog does :)

We used to have a cleaner. She was funny. Lena I think her name was.

But since its just me and my Dad, we didn't really find any use for her - since we're clean and tidy, 90% of the time. :)

Problem of the cleaners, is that they come and go... They are often young, and find something better to do (hopefully) in their lives, esp. when they basically come from abroad.

Our current cleaner is, er, number 6 of the last 4 years, and happens to be the sister of number 3, who was replaced by number 4 when she found a better job, but the ex-husband of number 4 was shot by hired guns in some country of South America (!), so she had to take care of her kids, and number 5 came in her place for a short while.

Well, of course we use their names normally, that was just to make it, er, simple.

Do you think I should publish a novel about that ? Like "My cleaning ladies and I", in a (self-pathetic) Nick Hornby style ?

I have someone come in every other Saturday AM to clean. I have a one bedroom condo and I pay her $45. She's here about 3-4 hours and does a top to bottom cleaning.

I put extra pubes on the bowl just before she comes.

*falls down laughing* :D

We have someone come once every 2 weeks to do a fairly thorough cleaning. With 2 dogs, 2 (almost 3) young kids, and 2 working parents, cleaning comes low on the list.

While we try and keep things fairly neat, we will straighten things on the night before she does the cleaning, for reasons mentioned earlier - in order to clean, she needs to be able to get to the counters, floors, etc. Besides, we need to make sure things are put away properly just as a normal course of life, not just because the cleaning lady is on her way.

Sloth life

Yep, I had the same some years ago, while still single and going out a lot on Friday nights...
I would open the door at 9., crash back on the bed while the cleaner was doing the living-room, and then crash on the sofa when she was doing the bedroom...

I guess she got a funny idea of me, but well, my brain could not really care less... :p

I'm in a house with three other college guys and it seems that nothing every gets clean. Though over winter break everyone went home for the holidays and I was left in the house by myself with nothing to do for two weeks. Needless to say that house was spotless!

On a normal basis I clean whenever I do laundry. So about every 2 weeks.

I always made sure that things were where i could find them incase she tidyed them away and i counldnt. it makes it easier.

My mom does that all the time. It's really getting on my nerves when I am at home. You don't really need a cleaner when you clean the house yourself after all.

But other than that, I do need a cleaner in my apartment. Really bad :)

We do not have a maid, my grandpa and grandma do. They clean the house before the maid comes. It's funny.

I quite enjoying cleaning when I actually get round to it. It's somewhat therapeutic. :p Except when it's someone else's mess!

My parents won't LET the cleaning clean my room unless I clean it first! Like seriousely wtf?!? Where's the logic there?

It's all in the definition of "cleaning". To your parents, "cleaning" your room likely means (for the "maid") things like vacuuming, dusting, Windex-ing the mirrors and windows. For you, they mean pick up your clothes, make your bed, get the magazines off the dresser, etc. - in effect tiding your stuff, making it so the maid can indeed "clean" your room.

If, on the other hand, they ask you to do things like vacuum your rug before the maid gets there, that's a little odd. ;)

Yea that makes sense. Me and my parents must have a very different definition of cleaning though, to me doing all that stuff you mentioned is cleaning. Everything. To me, picking up my dirty socks off the floor is cleaning and that's what I believe the maids should be doing.

And another thing. I like my room the way it is. I don't mind it being what other people call 'dirty'. So why should my parents care about that too, nobody's making them come in, and they rarely do.

Believe me, cleaning people don't get paid enough to pick up dirty socks and underwear.

Oh, I don't know, maybe because it's their house? They've paid for it, as well as probably the bulk of your furniture and accessories, and they have a vested interested in keeping it well-maintained so they don't have to put more money into it.

Of course, I'm an old guy and a parent, so I have a different perspective than I did when I was a high school kid. ;)

Yea, I'm sure my views on this will change too when I'm a parent. But for the moment I can't for the life of me figure out what goes through their heads.

If it's any consolation, they're having the same problem with you. :p

I know. They want you out (because of your room), and they figure that you'll never get a girlfriend/wife to move in with her, if the candidate sees your room first... :D

It's a conspiracy !
