I also like to mention that some Apple resellers provide their own warranty options.

e.g. here in Germany, where I actually live, Gravis.de, major EU Apple reseller and retailers (there are no official Apple shops in Germany) sells its own coverage. IIRC, they were making me an offer for iBook G4 (i had in one in past) which was ~30% cheaper than Apples, but for 5 years. Only catch was that the warranty was effective only in Gravis shops around Europe, while AppleCare is international and works everywhere you go.

P.S. Now they seem to have different offer - http://www.gravis.de/service/garantieerweiterung/ - e.g. 130€ for 3y on MBP.

24/7 phone tech support comes with applecare. No reason not to get it and bundle it with your machine if you're over the initial 90 days tech support period.

If something goes wrong on your MBP, God forbid, they can be hella expensive to repair and/or replace.

If you don't buy Applecare, you'll be silently praying every day during your second and third year of ownership that your MBP won't break. If you do, you'll be silently hoping that it will....:D

I purchased my mac with an American Express card which doubles the manufacturer's warranty. So I decided against purchasing Apple Care because it will only give me one extra year for $300+. Not worth it for my situation.

I think AppleCare is definitely worth it especially since Mac's aren't the cheapest computers around. I think of it as "extending" the life of a Mac.

Forget about phone support, you can always get solutions on the net; AppleCare is great because of hardware coverage.

I always thought extended warranties were a waste, still do, but it really isn't with Apple products. Working for AppleCare, I came to understand how crucial it is to cover something so expensive and there are a lot of things that can go wrong that a user can't fix themselves.

Like others stated, best bet is to purchase AppleCare anywhere BUT Apple themselves.

Is apple care worth it on a uni-body MBP new or refub.? If so when should I buy it? Right away, or wait till the 1yr is up?

Apple care doesn't cover accidental damage, only "defective" components (also offers support though.) The thing is that *usually* when some component is defective, it would fail very quickly (within months or weeks) wich the regular 1year warranty should cover. Also for $180~$350 which is what apple care cost, you can practically replace any component that should break after the first year (maybe not logic board, but pretty much everything else e.g. display, optic bay, HDD, etc.) I saved my money and will use it next time i upgrade (buy a new one) my system (that money represent almost 20% of my next system).

yes

Yes, I think applecare is worth it. Definitely try to get a discount, either student or ebay. I have bought on ebay before, ending at 200$ for the MBP AC.

The second thing is, I like to upgrade my computers every 2-3 years and with the applecare insurance, I generally get at least 100$ more in selling prices than what units sell for on ebay, and craigslist. Now, I DO take pretty good care of my equipment, so that increases selling price, but most buyers are will to pay a little something for essentially the insurance policy that if there is anything wrong with the computer, APPLE will be there behind them to service it for at least a few months, and usually about 6-12 months.

So, in the end, I pay about 100$ to have the insurance, and figure I'll get the 100$ BACK in the sales end.
