Hmmm, some pretty enticing prices on Iph5 and Iph5s with bad ESNs. If the IpT6 release is a dud, it's nice to know us IpT uses can still get decent hardware to replace our IpT5's. I take it you can still use wifi and GPS with a bad ESN?
Yes, wifi and GPS are still usable with a bad ESN. Keep in mind that an iPhone with a bad ESN can never be used as a phone. (or more technically accurate: no reliable and legal way)

so, given that the ipod touch is two gens behind... should I instead get a refurb or used iphone 5 for roughly the same money?

It's 3 generations old now, 4 this fall, probably, plus it's only got 256MB on an OS that chugs with 512MB. Presumably it won't get updated again either. I wouldn't personally buy one. Heck, a Nokia 520 or 635 is better in many ways for like $30-55.

Is bad ESN described on craigslist etc. as "lock in cloud" or similar- or is this sometime else?

Correction

The biggest concern is you're leaving yourself vulnerable if you're running old software OSes on the Internet.

Geez, I can't believe Vista support ends in just over 2 years! It launched EIGHT YEARS AGO! Hard for me to believe it's gone by that fast!

I'm assuming I'll have to quit using my iPad 2 online past this coming fall *sigh*.

The whole "it'll be unsafe online" thing is pretty much 100% BS scare tactic used to convince the gullible to buy more new products.

I don't think there will ever be a 6th geb iPod touch. Also I think this is the iPod touches final year at the Apple Store.

In today's world of super cheap smart phones the iPod is looking less needed.

Well, I still retain some hope for a 4.7" 128GB iPT/6g, for 2015. Otherwise those who prophesize the death of iPT will prove to be true.

If they will ever launch an iPT/6g as described above, I'll grab one: it will function as my mobile music bank (on foot or on drive or when in office) plus as my quickie internet viewer (at home or elsewhere) where I can have wi-fi connection. If so,
1) I can still use my good old iP5 as long as its battery lasts as a "phone" and as the "personal hotspot".
2) I'll give my iPAd Air / 128GB - Cellular to my wife or daughter and get myself an iPad Air 2 / 128GB - Wi-Fi only; but use it less frequently mostly when I'm at home or in some leisure trip, where I can get hold of some wi-fi nevertheless...

I simply dislike and have got fed up with using a 4" screen for internet (as in my current iP5 or in my iPT/5g both having 64GB storage...) and want to use a minimum 4.7" screen for that purpose.

But if the bigger screen iPT/6g will only remain as a mirage, I will remain hesitant whether to get the iP6S+, or not, by the end of the year: it will be pretty useful as my internet viewer (with the 5.5" secret being bigger than the minimum 4.7"screen I can afford for...) but too big (in size) to use as a phone or to carry around as a music bank. That's why I'm so keen and still hopeful for this uncertain iPT/6g.

Let's cross our fingers...

I haven't done much research here, but I reckon there are some Androids in the $50 to $200 range that are very nice given the amount you paid.

On the iOS side of things.... not so much. I'd like to keep an iOS devices for the games on there. Problem is, the cheap Iphones that can match Android phone prices don't seem to be up to supporting ios8, let alone ios9 (assuming ios9 doesn't get revamped to be more efficient like Lollipop. Best to assume it'll be at least that much resource hungry). The ones that can support ios8 well and have room for "future proof" potential, are no longer cheap, let alone "super cheap".

Since i dont need full-time internet, i still prefer an iPod touch than a cheaper smartphone.

I'm different, yes.... but i'm not the only one.

PS: i still use my iPod touch 4gen for my routines, and there's no cheap android with better screen than this.

I think Ipod touch 5 can still be good for camera on the go!!!

That is i dont know whats the price of digital camera these days. Im sure they dont make one with 4 inch screen to check your photo.

I am daft, I failed to spot this thread or forum section... Anyway, I made a new thread but thought I would ask my question on this existing one:

Just wondering if people think Apple will update the iPod Touch this year? I have a Nano 3rd gen I use for the car, and it works great, but was toying with the idea of upgrading to an iPod Touch as I have no iOS devices, left those for Android, but I have collected a lot of iOS apps over the years and my Mac won't run them haha. So was toying with a Touch as iPod tend to be the one device you never get rid off or change often, unlike a phone.

Now I could hold out until Christmas and have the 16GB one as a present (daft thinking about this in February I know), but will it be updated by then, or still around even? The plan is I would just leave it in my pocket and use bluetooth for the car, I'll put one of those thin sticky plastic armour cases on it, but the key is it's small enough to leave in a pocket. If they update it then it may be too big for that if they give it the iPhone 6 screen? Because I have my mobile in the pocket too.

And as to why I use an iPod for music? Simple, I haven't found anything better than iTunes for me, so I stick with it and the iPod, can you also purchase music direct to the iPod Touch, and download podcast to it?

So yeah, most of my apps are games, I know the 5th gen will happily run my older titles like Robocalypse, but will it run Real Racing 3 or Sky Gamblers Cold War? Which came out last year or 2013.
