Regardless of what they are telling you, they can not make you purchase an optional extended warranty. Return everything you bought from that location and purchase the iPhone elsewhere. I'd also put a call in to AT&T's customer service to let them know that you don't appreciate the sleazy tactics they are using at that location.

You might want to give apple a call as well to let them know what their partner stores are doing.

I just got off the phone with the manager from the store and was told the following: "After all the issues with the antenna, we are selling the iphone 4 as part of a bundle with applecare IF the iphone is purchased in person at an ATT store. If it is bought on the internet it is sold without applecare. This is done as part of policy change by ATT in order to protect their costumers and address the antenna issues moving forward." Alas, no refund could be given. I also "heard" Radio Shack is forcing individuals into buying these "bundles" which could include a case or applecare. I also "heard" Best Buy is not selling iphones to "early upgrade" costumers. My concerns is: are these practices even legal?? what happened to the good old days when bulls*** walks and money talks?? Maybe for iphone 5 apple should just sell through the apple store instead of sending stock to these other electronic stores. I'm fairly certain they will stake make the some amount of profit. Anybody else here been part of a practice like this through any other store??

This still makes no sense since you get a free year of AppleCare anyway when you purchase the phone, and if they don't make any changes to the iPhone 4 that alleviates the antenna issue after a year, they obviously will never do it since a new iPhone will be out by then.

Strange. Would you mind posting the store location and phone number?

Dude you have been lied to by the sales person first and now the manager. They might have decided to sell it that way from that particular store but neither is it legal nor does his explanation makes any sense.

Like others mentioned he phone already comes with 1 year replacement warranty and complementary phone support. You have until the last day of your warranty expiration to purchase the Apple care plan which extends the warranty by one more year.

To me this seems like a clear case of store trying to meet it's apple care sales target by putting in this shady practice. My suggestion is go higher up.

Yep. They are trying to boost their numbers and are hoping that their customers are not informed enough to figure out they are being scammed. Unfortunately they probably get away with it most of the time.

Take your case higher up and put the hurt on these d bags. Make sure you get the sales rep and the managers names.

I was told by a couple of employees at an AT&T store that they do not make commission on the Apple Care stuff. Whether I was lied to is another matter.

Offcourse they do.
They dont sell applecare at that store without making a profit.
There's a good markup on those plans.

He lied to you.
AT&T does not sell the iphone 4 as bundle with applecare or has a policy like that. Sounds like he's in on the trick to make more money on his store. You should go and report him to his higher up district manager or call up AT&T and take it further.
Thats BS.

I'm not talking about AT&T, I'm talking about the sales staff making a commission or spiff. I have no doubt AT&T makes a profit on the sales of Apple Care.

I wish someone would do that to me when I get ready to buy something and force a extended warranty on me. He will not be to happy what happens next.

Best Buy tried to do it to me when I was buying a TV. I gladly let them and everyone in the vicinity know I was not too happy with their crap and then left. I no longer shop there. :)

I don't have any patience for shady sales people.

Sounds like the OP needs to call 611 from his new iPhone 4 and get someone other then the store manager. That's TOTALLY shady, and it's obvious that someones bonus commission check "made" that store policy.

Do employees get commission for selling AppleCare or something? Don't see what he would get out of it.

No they do not. Which is why I don't understand why the rep was pushing it, unless he/she owns a share in Apple stock or something.

You need to go higher up the food chain until you get someone that is not in on this. Also go to the store and ask that the manager put this into writing.

I agree with this. Something about that doesn't make sense to me at all. When I got my iPhone 4 at the very end of July, I was not forced into buying an Apple care plan from AT&T.

Ahh yes they tried this at the Radioshack when I traded my 3GS...the sales guy tried and tried to force this on me however I informed him that I already had Apple Care and he then gave up. I really didn't have it at the time...I knew it was just him trying to get a "multi sale", after that he tried to force a case on me...

"your mind tricks don't work on me boy"

that is such BS

AT&T stores coast to coast got in SERIOUS trouble by Apple for bundling iPhone 2/3G() with accessories and extended warranties and I doubt any of this has changed. Typically at the call of some idiotic manager.

Send a message to "sjobs@apple.com" with perhaps a receipt scan or details about the store and when you purchased the item.

And if the manager really said (not saying they didn't but if)
"After all the issues with the antenna, we are selling the iphone 4 as part of a bundle with applecare IF the iphone is purchased in person at an ATT store. then they are probably getting fired.

I agree that manager is in on whatever the sales person told you. As far as the Best Buy not allowing people with early upgrades to purchase a phone I can say that is a lie. I was only eligible for an early upgrade and was allowed to preorder the iphone 4. I had it in my hands on launch day. My advice is call the District Manager and voice your concerns you may atleast be able to get your money back on the warranty.

Really? Because contacting the CEO is the only way to fix the problem?

The OP needs to just call 611 or AT&T's Customer Support or even another AT&T store that is farther away and ask them about their store policy. If it doesn't match, let them know that another AT&T store is doing it and they will most likely do something. I'm not saying you should stop there, but that's a good first step. After that, just call some sort of corporate number or Customer Support if you haven't already.

Was the associate wearing sunglasses and a trench goat? He conned you into doing something that took money out of your pocket and put some money into his pocket.

I purchased Apple Care for my iPhone but there was no pressure what so ever from the associate. In fact, he told me to think about it and if I wanted to wait a while I could buy it later from Apple.

Yes because we all believe that steve whatshisface really answers each and every email sent that way.

people have chimed in for much less serious offenses.

All of these have been great points. I did reach out to another ATT store in Manhattan (I am in NYC so the initial store that forced me to purchase AppleCare is in Queens) and spoke with both a Sales rep there and the Store manager and evidently "complaints" are coming through that regular brick and mortar stores in the outer boroughs and outside of major cities are executing unsavory practices in selling the iphone 4 due to the high demand and limited volume. He refunded the funds for the AppleCare purchase. He told me he was not at liberty to discuss anything further because he was employed by ATT and could not badmouth the company. He further suggested that moving forward iphones are sold alone and not in bundles in and outside of ATT stores. My only concern in regards to this whole post is that I think we as consumers do need to start holding these manufacturers to some degree of responsibility. I understand regulation of business is as anti-American as hating apple pie and hotdogs but if apple is going to authorize third party retailers then some sort of regulation from apple to those retailers needs to be in place. Maybe for iphone 5 apple should be the only to sell the phone for the first 6 months??? or something to that degree. Perhaps apple can send "secret shoppers" into brick and mortar stores to see how this is being handled. Supply will always outweigh demand in order to yield profits, but at what point is the experience for the consumer sacrificed???? Again, I only post this because ultimately none of this was free. I also was interested in seeing if anyone out there had also been through a similar experience. On a good note, the phone is great!!! even coming from a 3GS it's definitely been a step-up.

Very well said.
Hope something is done and they dont let scams like that go on any more.
I'd also contact Apple and a higher up on AT&T to inform them about that store and store manager also.

Was it a ATT Owned store cause i know here in NY alot of places look like they are owned by ATT but actually are just a reseller of ATT phones ?
