apple superdrives are pioneers. and yes you've guessed - certain standard pc pioneer ones will work in mac. anyway, theres a little programs you can install that lets a bog standard dvdrw drive work with all the progs like itunes. i used it and it works fine, so i have a nice dvdrw drive designed for pc in my powermac :)

I have a rev A MacBook and I'm on my second MatSHITa drive and I'd say that yeah, they're the worst drives I've ever had on a computer. Very picky about media and I've had problems reading discs that were burnt on it (many different brands, all verified OK after burning). I'm not fond of the slot loaders. Fortunately I have a 5 year old Compaq on my network that still reads discs flawlessly. Perhaps it's just a rev A thing but nearly everyone I know with a MB/MBP in this part of the world has had their superdrive replaced at least once. Then again many have had a new logic board or two as well...and power adapters...and...sigh. What happened to QA?

What happened to QA?
When I joined the forums here (2.5 years ago, which was before the Intel switch), the general advice back then was to avoid Rev A products, and that all seemed to be based on Rev A experiences from years prior to me joining.

If you're asking 'What Happened to QA' (in the scope of Rev A issues, like the ones you listed), I think you'd have to go back 10+ years to find out when the Rev A QA problems first started.
