Fell asleep after waiting in line all morning. Bought the "no commitment" device only AT&T models and a stack of microsims. Looks like its time to do some cutting. Will report back.

I'm working on cutting it out as we speak, already f'd up one sim card :( going 4 second one as we speak

I'm pretty sure this is right for the AT&T models. Would be intrigued to know if it's the case for Verizon models. Apple Store aren't budging and are toeing the official line: that all "no commitment" phones are carrier locked...

That's what they said last year, as well. Unless Apple actively enters the IMEI into their database, it will be unlocked. The only time they do is when they enter your account information.

Yep. Works. Just tested voice, SMS, data. I'm adding a photo with a us tmo sim.

So its safe to say if I buy non-commitment plan from ATT site, it will be unlocked, correct?

Is it still going to be same if I buy it from local ATT store?

and you don't have to have an AT&T account to do this correct?

The first link said mine was locked, the second said unknown. I have a factory unlocked 4S I bought directly from Apple...
Yea i get that sometimes too! Its because of the servers.

No only apple store!

For the one that want to get the nano sim cut rite. Here is the template.

No, I don't have an account.

But the problem is that I am not US citizen, so I dont have SSN. Usually when I try to start a contract at a local store, they ask for $500 deposit which they will give back in one year.

Since I buy no-commitment and from online ATT store, will I still need to pay this deposit?

Sorry but could you explain why you would need/want to unlock a CDMA device? TIA!

Sure, I'm British but living in the USA. If I get the ATT model and unlock it, I can't use it on LTE bands when I return to the UK in March.

If I get the Verizon model and unlock it, I can use it here on any network in the meantime, and LTE in the UK when I return.

If you buy it at an Apple retail store no commitment, they won't ask you for any of that. When they start asking you for your account information, just tell them you want to buy the device only and they will skip that screen. I don't know about AT&T stores.

Yes, only Apple Store one's that for AT&T are UNLOCKED... Don't buy Verizon/Sprint they are even pain in the ass to get going.

Making a Nano SIM from Micro is wicked easy, no rocket science there.

Do thin it out a bit just to be on the safe side of the road.

Enjoy guys... Only sucky thing about T-MO is that is on EDGE only :(

I have friends who live in Los Angeles, can they just walk into an Apple Store and pick up a iP5 for 649 (+whatever the sales tax is) without signing upto a contract/plan and mail it to me in the UK?. It would save me like $150+ compared to here

I am doing just that, but for more gray market purposes :)

As people have said though, you won't have useable LTE in the UK... so you have to decide if that'll be a dealbreaker for you. There's always 3G/HSPA+ ?

I'm not fussed about LTE at all. I've got an iPhone4 and don't think I've used the normal web option for a few months, 90% of the time I'm on Wi-Fi
