That sounds correct. As long as you purchase device only and then see the unlock activation in iTunes you should be good to go.
Be aware the AT&T model only supports LTE in the US and Canada. In China it will be 3G. China uses a different Frequency for LTE.
Thanks for the response. Since he doesn't have a nano-sim from either AT&T or China Mobile, will heading down to the AT&T store for a new nano-sim cause AT&T to "re-lock" the device? And it doesn't matter if he uses the phone on AT&T first or on china mobile first, right?
AFAIK, china's rollout of LTE is progressing quite slowly. Basically won't get LTE speeds there.
