If you are still on the plan that you had before (basically if you didn't switch to the new plan) then you should still have the same options for upgrades that you had before, including the contract option (if that was an option you had before).
Of course,"SHOULD" is the key word. I hope they keep it too.

If you want to really know how much you are spending, do YOURSELF a big favor.

Write down your cost for the next 24 months. Use your current plan. And use other plans available for service and for the phone.

That upgrade is NOT FREE.

In many situations older plans with unlimited data, fan discount and 2 year subsidies are way cheaper for people than current available mobile share plans. That's a fact.
Nothing is free. Making monthly payments on a cellphone is not either.

Very true. I have done the analysis with the cheapest plan from Cricket and buying iPhones on my own. Still the old ATT plan with UDP & FAN beats it.

I hear you. I gets old when all these people saying mobile share its cheaper, you pay for the subsidies on the old plans etc....
Let me do MYSELF a big favor and figure it out.
So lets do some simple math on 2 years of service with base 16gb iphone models for example and new phones every 2 years.

My current family AT&T plan with FAN discount is $162 per month before taxes. 4 lines 750 minutes with unlimited texts and unlimited mobile to any US mobile and free N&W calling. Only minutes it deducts its when you call a land line during peak time and we got over 4000 rollover minutes so no probs there with enough calling minutes. Unlimited iphone data plans on 3 lines, 4th line regular flip phone with no data but that line also qualifies for full subsidy that we can use for another line or just get the phone and sell it.
Our unlimited data plan use is between 8-10GB per line sometimes a little more or less. So I'll compare usage to 30GB mobile share plan.

$199 for the 4 phones $796 and $162x24 months $3888. Grand total for 2 years with subsidized devices and service
=$4684

Next plan with 4 base model iphones 6 16GB with 24 months of next payments with 30GB of shared data is $393 per month.
Grand total for 2 years with subsidized devices and service $9432.
Mobile share would cost me twice as much or an extra $4748 over 2 years.

So someone tell me again how I would be saving money going to mobile share and how the 2 year upgrades is not free and added into my plan and would cost me more?

I don't understand upgrades.

I pay 72 - 78 a month for my iPhone 5s, unlim data, text and 450 mins and such.

If I use upgrade another 2 year 199 iPhone contract, my bill wouldn't change right? I thought it just means I am stuck locked in for 24 months which I'm starting with anyway.

I'd rather be locked in another 2 year contract knowing I have my unlimited for at least 2 more years right?

Do they raise my bill during 24 months when I upgrade? If so I've never ever noticed

You are on an older plan where he subsidy is built into it and you are paying it basically whether you are on or off contract (and whether you get a new device or not). So it certainly makes sense to get a new one on contract if you still can and you are still planning to stay with your carrier.

Thanks so by upgrading my price will remain the current bill other than the upgrade fee. I havnt upgraded in a few years, I might just upgrade and sell the new phone. My 5s works perfectly fine, I really just want a locked 24 months of unlimited data again lol.

Making me nervous thinking they will try kicking people off soon off contract

Assuming you have that option given your plan, you can do that. As far as locking in the plan, there really hasn't been much real talk of carriers just taking it away completely even from those who have it, so that's not likely, but even if they did somehow they can do that just as much to those under contract as those without a contract--you aren't locking in a particular plan or price point really with a contract, just mainly that you'll have some type of service from the particular carrier for a minimum period of time (or face paying a penalty for breaking that promise essentially).

The media seems to get the headlines wrong most of the time. While both Big Red & Ma Bell are doing away with 3rd party 2-year contracts and 2-year contracts for new customers, I've yet to read anything about forcing old customers to do so.

Certainly they'll be encouraged to move off, and God knows skeezy in-store salesman resort to all sorts of deceptive practices while trying to push customers to more profitable plans, but like I said, these off-contract plans with unubsidized phones seem to only be mandatory for new customers...for the moment.

Exactly. As of now, they have not done anything to force you off of a "grandfathered" 2 year contract w/ subsidy... BUT, they have dropped all 3rd party sources for on-contract subsidized upgrades, and force you to come to their stores/websites to do the upgrade. You can bet your bottom dollar that they will be working hard to get you off of that older plan. While they cannot legally move you off the plan, they can lean hard on you to try to get you to give it up. Stay strong.

IMHO Legally they can, but they understand that they loose a lot of customers.

Agreed
The minute I lose my unlimited I'm dropping my smart phone and getting an 40 month plan or going to another plan such as T-Mobile as it works where I live.

I just keep att because of unlimited and I'm happy with them. Once I lose it il have no reason to stick with them.

2 year contracts look as though they're a thing of the past. Apple eliminating it from its site is proof. This may be the last year to upgrade on a 2 year contract on an ATT SITE
ATT going to lose customers but it seems they don't care which is ATT usual attitude

How effing effing dare they! *carrier hands them new phone on $0 down lease deal* "You don't owe us anything for now, have fun!" Oooh shiny! *starts playing with the new shiny and forgets about their old contract til the next bill comes* lol

Yeah, they can. It constitutes a "material adverse change", which is an instant "out" of your contract. The irony here is that with the new Mobile Share plans and NEXT, you really aren't under contract for the service. All you've agreed to is to pay for the device over time.

Financing (vs. lease).

They can basically get rid of the contract option completely for those in older plans and after some time none of them will be on a contract at which point they can get rid of those plans and not create an out given that those customers wouldn't be on a contract to which an out would apply.

I'm with Verizon. Once my phone was paid for, I dropped an additional $15/month not counting the monthly payment for the phone. Verizon penalizes you for paying for a phone on the installment plan.

You mean on Edge/financing? When it comes to the recent/current plans it's the same as having owned equipment simply with the addition of the installment payment.

Same exact here bud.
I don't think AT&T will decide to play chicken with millions of customers like that.
If they decide to put an end to it is when I'll be with you at Tmobile switching:D
